Chapter Two: The Monster Within

1516 Words
Aralia's Point of View As I watched from a distance, he closely watched Crypta despite my warning to hide. I knew he was skilled at stealth and wouldn't reveal himself. But still, I couldn't help but worry. He was once an orphan whom I took in and raised as my son after finding him abandoned in the forest as a toddler. I didn't know what he was until he transformed before me, which terrified even me as an immortal forest guardian. I taught him how to control his hunger and urges, and despite the monster that lurked within him, he had a good and gentle heart. In his human form, Eyrx was a handsome man with an attractive aura. He was tall and muscular, with thick dark brown hair and kind hazel eyes. Eyrx was always attentive and quick to help when needed, and he would complete any task given to him with great diligence. However, he tended to keep to himself and avoid socializing with others, perhaps because he feared being judged for what he was or that he might lose control. But that changed when Eyrx saw Crypta, and I could already tell that his life would take a different direction now. I was not aware that she would come. Selene had informed me that two other individuals would soon be granted entry into the Dark Moon pack, and Crypta was obviously one of them. I wondered if my son would be the other. Eyrx's Point of View I did as Aralia had asked of me and ensured that the bodies of the operatives were gone. I even ventured close to the Armstrong Corporation site to ensure that Crytpa had not left any nearby. There was an older man with bite marks on his neck, indicating he had been drained of blood. I made sure to get rid of that evidence as well. Sometimes, my insatiable hunger was a blessing and not a curse. The forest guardian had informed me that I could rid myself of the menacing creature within and be cured, should I ever decide to do so. Aralia knew of some elders within the Dark Moon pack who could heal me. However, there was a significant risk involved. There were no guarantees that the healing process would be successful. If it failed and I was discovered, they would have to kill me and burn my remains. This was a risk I wasn't prepared to take. Although my life was difficult and tormenting, it was still mine. I returned to the magical barrier, lingering in the shadows, hoping to glimpse Crypta again. I couldn't stop thinking about her. She was beautiful, but there was something more. I didn't understand the unnatural pull I felt towards her, and it unnerved me. I knew it was better to limit my interactions with others, especially someone as stunning as her. If I ever harmed her, I would never be able to forgive myself. It was not worth the risk. However, I could still watch her from afar. I would allow myself at least that much. I observed as Crypta left the packhouse with Rogue, Selene, and another vampire-hybrid who seemed familiar to her. Her gaze never left him, even when he wasn't paying attention to her. I wondered who he was to her. The thought of this being the person she loved made my heart ache despite my cold demeanor. I listened closely to their conversation, wanting to know and understand the situation more. Selene wanted the trio to join the Dark Moon pack, and they seemed willing. I was pleased to know that Crytpa would be staying. "Luna Jo is pregnant and with more than one child. As her confidence and skills grow, she will be a warrior Luna like her mother. Jo has found a good friend in Clara, the Beta's mate, but she could also benefit from forming a bond with all three of you. Each one of you knows what it is like to be judged, and to grow up in not the best of circumstances. While Jo navigates her experiences and the expectations placed upon her, your support will play a unique role in her healing journey, unlike what others in the pack can provide," Selene explained to the small group. I was intrigued by their understanding. What challenges had these three gone through to gain it? Maybe Aralia was right, and some people wouldn't judge me based on the monster that lurked within me. They could look past that and accept me for who I truly am. Until now, I had never realized how much I wanted that. Selene looked up, sensing me nearby, and offered a warm smile. Perhaps the statement had been made for me, too. "Does Luna Jo know she is expecting more than one child?" Crypta asked. Selene chuckled, "Oh, certainly not. Jo is... well, you'll understand soon. It’s a lot for her to grasp being a werewolf, falling in love, embracing the Luna role, and coming to terms with soon becoming a mother." "Felix had quite a reputation before meeting Jo. He's changed," Adrian noted. "Love does that," Selene said, looking at Adrian knowingly. However, she also let her gaze travel to me discreetly, indicating that she was speaking to both of us. I might win the favor of the Moon Goddess, after all. Alpha Felix, Luna Jo, and Gamma Damian approached the group, looking eager to speak with them. It was evident that Gamma Damian was Rogue's fated mate. The way they interacted with each other, the unspoken bond, was similar to what I had seen between Wesley and Aralia. "Alpha Felix, we would like to join the Dark Moon pack. Thank you for your offer," Adrain spoke on behalf of the group. So, he was their leader but also their friend. But was he something more to Crypta? That much I could not yet discern. "There are a few fully furnished homes close to the packhouse. Damian will have one, and I propose another for the three of you. This house is spacious, with room for an office and a meeting space for your equipment. Would you consider sharing a home? Damian, Jacob, and Clara will be nearby," the Alpha proposed. I perked up at that piece of information. Now I knew where to look for Crypta, but I would have to remain hidden while admiring her from afar. I could occasionally leave her small gifts of flowers, but to do this, I would need Aralia's help since I couldn't cross the magical barrier. "Your generosity is much appreciated, Alpha Felix. Thank you," Adrian responded. "Tomorrow, a pack ceremony will officially welcome you three as Dark Moon pack members. For now, settle into guest rooms. Moving into your new home can wait. Spend the next few days at the packhouse to get acquainted with everyone and your new pack. I'm thrilled you've decided to join us. I believe you'll find it quite enjoyable here," Felix told the small group. "Currently, it is advisable to limit the movements of your pack members. I suggest all packs follow this measure and remain vigilant regarding individuals entering pack territories. The operatives should not have been able to breach the magical barrier, which leads me to believe that something sinister is on the horizon and dark secrets will soon be revealed. Jo, be prepared to support Lennox when the time comes," warned Selene before disappearing from their sight and popping up right beside me. "I finally have the pleasure of meeting the elusive adopted son of one of my dearest friends! It's delightful to meet you face-to-face, Eyrx. I appreciate your assistance in handling the remains of the operatives," Selene said with a smile. "You're welcome," I replied timidly. I had only conversed with Aralia; speaking with Selene made me nervous. "I noticed your interest in Crypta. She will require protection, and I could use your help in ensuring that. Would you accept my blessing to be able to enter the Dark Moon pack? I understand that you have diligently controlled your urges and would never intentionally endanger anyone," the Moon Goddess inquired. I imagined myself delivering the flowers and, with enough courage, perhaps engaging in occasional conversations with Crypta. Blushing, I nodded in agreement. "Eyrx, the Collective poses a greater threat than the Hunter Foundation. Be cautious while in the forest alone. Despite being immortal, you have vulnerabilities that the Collective is aware of," Selene cautioned. "Are they aware of me?" I asked, surprised. "They are aware of all of us. Be cautious, dear boy. I know you are afraid of the beast inside, but there is a lot of goodness in you. Remember that. If you allow yourself to see it, having friends who understand the struggle for acceptance would be a blessing. Please consider getting to know all of Crypta's loved ones. She may seem tough, but she has a kind heart. There is a reason you are drawn to her, and you will discover it in your own time," Selene reassured me.
