Chapter 3 - A Precious Commodity

1744 Words
King Mortus; I lay wide-eyed and awake, splayed out in the nude across the surface of my massively sized mattress, surrounded and entangled with three exhausted vampire mistresses who are each locked within their own deepened slumbers. Needless to say it was a long night for all of us. Not that I’m complaining, the s*x was good as it always is and I do enjoy the company in my bed when I sleep. But tonight I cannot sleep, no matter how hard I try. The truth is I have far too much on my mind; too many problems that need solving. The life of a King was never meant to be easy, though I’ll admit I’ve always found the necessary solutions when faced with problems in the past. As ruler, it is my job. I turn my head to the left slowly enough to see Jade, the brunette Vampress beside me. She is snuggled in against my side with one arm draped carelessly across her face. My eyes travel downwards and notice that young Sally sleeps silently by my feet. Her jet-black hair is spread out messily across the sheets as her chest rises and falls so slowly it is almost too hard to see. My head continues to turn until I finally glance at Leila, with her straight dirty-blonde hair falling like a golden waterfall made of silk down over her shoulder. Any other man would feel at utter peace in a situation like this. After sharing his bed with these three gorgeous creatures, staying up all hours of the night and early morning and doing nothing but feeding and f*****g over and over again. So why do I feel so… unfulfilled? With a loud sigh I begin to untangle myself from the women sharing my bed, one limb at a time until I can climb off the bed. I stand and quickly dress myself with the long, red silk robe hanging over the back of a chair close-by. I dress quickly but not because I’m cold… vampires never get cold. Tightening the silk strap around the centre, I begin to make my way out, as if guided by the glowing moonlight as it beckons me to approach. I walk through the open balcony archway and out towards the edge, my glowing crimson eyes fixated on the brightness of such a spectacular full-moon displayed before me.  And not just any moon, mind you… A blood moon. That could mean only one thing to our kind; trouble is to come. Once I meet the decorative railing of the balcony I stop and rest both of my hands down against it to help balance my weary body. My luminescent eyes scan the surroundings as I ponder many incredulous thoughts silently to myself. The caress of the chilly night air against my already icy-cold skin is somewhat soothing and I close my eyes for a moment to soak up the ambience. With a deep breath I have calmed myself… until I hear the sound of someone clearing his voice from behind me. “King Mortus. May I have a word?” ‘I know that voice.’ A smirk immediately forms at both corners of my lips as I slowly and purposefully turn around to face him. “Kallus. To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?” I taunt him, casually leaning back against the railing and crossing both my arms across my firm chest. My most recent guest Kallus quickly turns his head back to glance at the three Vampress mistresses of mine, still slumbering on my bed as he speaks again. “I’m not interrupting anything, am I? I can come back at another time?” I shake my head as I voice my reply. “No, that won’t be necessary. They’ll most likely sleep through the entire day after the night we just had...” I announce proudly with a smile. “So, what brings you here at such an hour?” Kallus clears his throat once more, showing some obvious form of anxiousness. I know him well and it is clear that this cannot be a good sign. “My lord, there are rumours spreading of an apparent uprising.” he reports with concern. I roll my eyes and let out a giant ‘huff’ of frustration as I turn back to face my splendid view, leaving my back to face him now. I’ve had just about enough of these rumours, and the thought of anyone being foolish enough to try and rise up against their King, I stew in fury at the thought of it. “Have you learned anything new about the rumours, about who’s spreading them?” I enquire calmly. “No, my lord. I’ve spoken with many of my sources and they each agree that an attack on the monarchy is imminent. I’ve already gone to the trouble of ensuring that our guards are immediately doubled.” I do not respond verbally; I simply continue to stare out into the early morning darkness. If only I knew who it was threatening an uprising, I would have their head mantled on my wall for such a treasonous act. 'No one defies me.’ My eyes narrow as he continues on with his report and concerns. “We have every entrance to the mansion heavily guarded in case whoever is responsible for the rumours chooses to try and attack you here-” “-They wouldn’t dare be stupid enough.” I snap, cutting in on the end of his sentence. I turn back around to face my Head of Security with a stern expression. If there is one thing Kallus is well-aware of about me, it’s that I don’t like being challenged or threatened. I am the King of Vampires and will be shown the respect I deserve. “Oh, I almost forgot.” Kallus reached inside of his jacket pocket and pulled out a small piece of paper as he continued. “We got a call earlier on tonight from one of our Vamperial Soldiers out on a hunt.” I frown. “Why would I care about that?” I enquire with irritation. “He said something about finding a Euphoric…” I suddenly freeze, my eyes widening to the size of saucers as I hear this rarely spoken word escape his lips. 'Did he really just tell me that we have possession of a Euphoric? It's not possible!’ I use my vampire speed and within less than a second I am right in front of my Head of Security, staring him down right in the eye. He seems to cower before me, hunching down to make himself seem smaller. “Are you sure you heard correctly?” I ask. “Yes sire, as I understand a hunting party returned this evening with one of the hunters still missing. We believe he’s the one who called it in and that he’s traveling with the human.” Kallus explains, his voice still a little shaky. I turn my head to the side as I consider what this may mean. A Euphoric is a human with blood more sought after than any other human. Not only does their life-giving liquid taste incredible, but it also gives whoever drinks it added strength, wisdom and power. And they are extremely rare in this day and age. With Vampires needing to keep themselves hidden from humans, it was hardly ever that our kind would come across one with blood such as this. Now I was excited. But was this information indeed accurate? I knew that I could not be certain until I had a taste of this human myself. And I would… - Zane; Once we arrive within the gates of the Vamperial City once more I feel a wave of well-earned thankfulness wash over me. I’ve managed to complete my mission after all. And not just with any old human, she’s a Euphoric one! The car rounds a corner and stops at our destination. Or as I like to call it, home. Yes, maybe taking her here wasn’t such a good idea to begin with, but with the sun due to rise in the next ten minutes or so, I knew we wouldn’t make it up to the King’s mansion in time. The human would have to remain here with me until nightfall tomorrow. After saying a quick ‘thanks’ to Harvey for his assistance in my capture, I pick up the sleeping woman in my arms and carry her in through the gates leading up towards my mid-sized apartment. It’s actually quite nice for a place to live. Quite similar to what a human would call their home. The more notable differences of course would be the shielded windows and doorways, wisely installed to prevent any sunlight from entering the apartment during the daylight. All vampires have similar instalments in their homes. Carrying her inside through the open doorway, I make my way down the hallway and reach a door at the end. Opening the door and entering the room, I carefully place her down onto the mattress of single sized guest bed, located in my second bedroom, and tuck her in underneath the thick blanket carefully. If there’s one thing I know about humans, it’s that they get cold very easily, unlike us vampires. To us, everything is cold… unfeeling. But as I stand here, staring down at the beautiful sleeping angel before me, I begin to wonder about my own existence. I try to remember who I was before I became a vampire, but there’s nothing. No memories, nothing. Something within me begins to stir and I am having trouble focusing on completing my job. All I can see is her, peacefully resting before me. Nothing else. This woman who has such a rare and valuable blood type. Even having her here was putting both of us in danger. If any other vamps around the place learned of her existence, neither of us would be safe. I would need to be careful from this point forward. With everything that I did. Turning around I make my way back out of the room, allowing her to sleep the sedative drug off. I know it won’t be long until she wakes; an hour, two perhaps. And no doubt she will be wanting some answers when she wakes… But will they be answers I can give?
