My phone buzzed in my hand, having been staring at it for ten minutes straight. My hand flickered the screen with the text having me slip out of bed and rush to the door.
Kane: Door
I tried being quiet but I knew everyone in the house was awake. I ran down the steps, going to the kitchen. I plugged the kettle with it making a sound immediately. I hoped it was loud enough. There I was, snooping to the front door where I punched in the code and placed my finger on the scanner. The door unlocked with me pulling it open as quietly as I could. Kane just slid through as I pushed the door closed again, it locking instantly. I pulled to make sure and indeed it was locked.
My body turned, staring at Kane. His eyes fell on me, with his arms immediately coming around me, holding me tightly. I held on with all I had, my face on the crook of his neck, taking a whiff of him and it just calmed me. Everything seemed better all of a sudden, finding peace in his arms. He made everything better with his heart drumming as mine drummed, matching his.
I could smell the alcohol where I was, him pulling his head back from my hair to stare at me as I stared up at him. His gorgeous blue eyes just set me dazed with his dimples. He was the most handsome man I had ever seen. Well, my father had his own category.
He pulled me back in his arms, holding me firmly. It was time before we turned, him still holding me to walk towards the stairs, yet I froze where I was as my eyes picked up. I thought I would faint, cursing over and over in my head with my dad’s dark eyes staring down at us. I nearly fainted, my heart just drumming as if to escape me. There was no hiding, there was no going around it, just caught red-handed.
I was not good at the sneaking around thing, so, we were bound to be caught, but not on this day, not when my dad was already dealing with so much. Shame filled me, bowing my head, nothing I could do but apologize.
My head picked up, my eyes meeting his. He did not seem mad; he did not seem pissed at all. He just turned his head to Kane, giving him an eye and raising his fingers in a gun sign, silently shooting it out. I was sure it would go down from there. Who knew what dad would do? There were no limits in our family. Dad turned around and walked to their room, closing the door.
I was shocked, to say the least. What did that mean? Was he giving Kane the green light to be in the house by walking away? I did not know, the threat he had made hung in the air, but I would not waste such a miracle.
I tugged at Kane and ran up the stairs. We ran up, getting into my room to close the door, and nothing but darkness surrounded us.
“What is wrong? Are you okay?” Kane asked, his voice soothing me. I shook my head, the tears filling my eyes. My arms quickly went around his waist, pulling him to me as he hugged me again. I cried into him for some time before he picked me up. I was lain on the bed, him taking off his shoes and sweater, slipping in bed with me. My body was brought to him, holding me tightly.
“It’s okay, I am here, I am here.” He whispered over and over, brushing my hair back and kissing it now and again. I melted into him, falling silent and just lying there.
Sleep came creeping, clawing at me even when I did not want to sleep. Lying in Kane’s arms was something I treasured and, to me, I felt like sleep robbed me of the pleasure of it. Yet who would fight off the demon of sleep when it was there?
Nothing but darkness surrounded me until a loud sound came pulling me from sleep.
I shot up, tearing from Kane’s chest with his eyes opening, looking all around and seeing nothing but darkness, utter silence filling the room. It was silence so pregnant I knew something was wrong and my worries were soon confirmed as a window shuttered somewhere in the house. I shifted to the edge of the bed. What was happening? My head turned to Kane, both of us confused about what was happening. My feet touched the floor, bare, with them going cold instantly.
There was another shutter and another, then gunshots.
My heart dropped, immediately turning to run for the closet. I pushed my clothes away, opened my safe, and pulled out my gun.
“Masha, what is happening?! Masha, what is happening?” Kane kept shouting, hearing him behind me as I turned and he jumped away so fast, his eyes wide.
“What the hell dude? Why do…oohh my.” He was losing it with me walking past him to the door. I opened the door, seeing nothing but smoke. Gunshots rang out all over the house, leaving me shaking where I was. The gun shook in my hands as if it would drop, so scared I would pee on myself.
We had been prepared for this, we had been prepared for an attack like this, but it never happened, it had never happened before.
I wanted to cry, trying to see if I could make it to Ivan’s room, but I could not see anything, the smoke thick with fire up the stairs, burning as if thirsting for blood.
Kane was freaking out inside.
My window shuttered with something rolling on the floor.
I could not do this; I could not do this! I was freaking the fvck out, my eyes wide as Kane kept screaming my name. I rushed in, the grenade just sitting there. I quickly kicked it out of the room, it flying out my door only to explode in the air, shaking the whole house with some screams heard from below. My body was thrown from the door, some particles in the air with me coughing so hard while trying to get up. My heart was bleeding. My mom, my dad. I had to go out, I had to go down.
I was scared but I had to go there.
“Kane, stay here!” I shot out, my voice shaking along with my whole being.
“Masha!” Kane screamed back as if I was crazy. He did not understand that I would not lose my family, I would not lose them.
“Stay here!” I screamed, rushing out with my hands held out, eyes wide, looking for anything moving as I rushed down the steps. The fire was roaring, the smoke clogging my breathing pipes as my chest got so sore. But suddenly there was a figure coming my way. My hands shook so much I thought they would fall, my eyes closed ready to shoot. I could not, I could not, but I had to.
“Masha, get back up.” A voice I recognized rang out, a breath let out as my eyes snapped open, seeing Ivan rushing up. His arm was bleeding, my free hand to my mouth with tears clouding my eyes.
“Ivan,” I cried out.
“Run up to your room!” He screamed at me, snapping me from my daze as I turned and ran up the stairs as fast as I could. The smoke clogged my chest, it worked fast as I could not stop coughing, my eyes burning with my nose. Ivan pushed me into my room, shutting the door to lock it.
“Take the secret passage door.”
“Where is mom, where is dad?” I asked, not moving and just staring at him with my shaking hand.
“Ivan, where are they?!” I was screaming, insanity at play, feeling myself lose it.
“Masha, listen to me please, get into the secret passage and go out. I don’t have time for your theatrics!” He shot at me, taking my arm and dragging me as I screamed.
“Ivan no!”
He threw my body to the floor, my body hitting hard, sprawled there as I turned staring up at him.
“Get in there!” He screamed at me with me scrambling away just as Kane rushed out of the closet.
“What is this, Masha, what is this?!”
The tears just filled my eyes, Ivan grabbing Kane and throwing him after me. I stood up, running to the bathroom. They were behind me.
Ivan walked fast before me to open the cabin door, sliding all of it away, then bending to open the secret door. He pulled back then pointed for me to go in with his gun. I did not fight, rushing in and crawling through. It was a large pipe, crawling through it on all fours, moving as fast as I could. It became dark when the secret door was closed, not even sure if Ivan was behind us or not, just moving as fast as I could, tears streaming down my face. It was a long way, getting to the other door and pushing it with both feet hard until the door gave out.
I jumped out. It was not so fun without dad behind me, telling me how to escape. It wasn’t our little game anymore. It was real and who knew what was happening to them at that point?
