Kurt pov
I woke up with a start, my heart racing as I stared around the room, taking deep breathes trying to still my heart. Sweat and tears streamed down my face mixing with each other as I gripped the bed sheets tightly. “She’s safe, she’s not gone, she’s safe.” I chanted repeatedly, closing my eyes as I curled into a ball. More tears spilled down my cheeks as I pressed my face against my knees, wrapping my arms around them. I dream about that night I found out Lilian was gone a lot, and I dream about the night she returned all bloody and broken. I never told Lilian this, I didn’t want to scare her.
I caught something different in the air as I took a deep breath, and I uncurled out of my ball and stood up straight next to my bed. “She was here? Lilian was here? How did she come in when I wasn’t paying attention?” I said softly, standing up and scratching my head.
‘You’re slacking on your creepy stalking duty.’ Brandon said with a laugh. I took a deep breath, going to my dresser, and throwing some pants and a shirt on. I usually always slept in my boxers.
‘Shut up Brandon, I’m not in the mood. Why did she come in here? She never comes in here.’ I said as I slipped my shoes on. Was something wrong?
‘Look at you, you’re blushing. You’re so happy, it’s like a pup wagging its tail.’ Brandon said with a snicker.
‘Shut up, there could be something wrong that she was looking for me.’ I said, trying to hide my happiness that she came to find me.
I rushed through the bathroom to her room, doing a quick sweep to see if she was in there. Where did she go? I couldn’t help but chew on my lip in worry, my heart racing. ‘Let me out, I’ll sniff out your precious child.’ Brandon said rolling his eyes. I sighed, then slowly took off my clothes and rolled them up tightly. With a long shake, I shifted into Brandon, stretching as my joints popped. I could see us in her full-length door mirror, our dark gray fur, and dark blue eyes. We picked up my clothes in our mouth and sniffed her scent, picking up the trail and taking off out the door. Together we bounded down the hallway, nearly colliding into Lyell and Alarick as they walked down from the Beta floor hand in hand.
“What the hell, Kurt? Why are you a wolf? Where’s Lilian?” Alarick asked in confusion. I whined and pawed at the ground, and he nodded at me. “Let me know if you find her, we’ll look in the house for you.” I yelped in reply and took off down the stairs, barking at the warrior in front of the door to open it for me. I ran down the steps and stopped to sniff the air, looking around everywhere. The gardens were strong now that most of the flowers were bloomed, it was hard to track in it, but I was fairly sure she was in there.
I ran past a couple of omegas who jumped out of the way with a startled gasp. My nose pressed down to the ground I tried my best to keep her scent, nearly bumping into more omegas on the way. When I felt her scent was stronger I looked up, recognizing where I was. Just around the corner of the maze was a giant tree in the middle with a bench underneath I looked around and ducked behind a bush, shifting back into my human body and putting my clothes back on. I didn’t want to startle her in any way.
Once I was clothed I walked around the corner to the tree, looking at the bench in surprise. Where was she? Did I miss her? I turned around but she wasn’t there either, and almost started down the other end of the maze when I happened to catch a hint of black at the corner of my eye. She was up in the tree, of course! I smacked my forehead in annoyance. She wasn’t paying attention to me, she was lost in her book, so I slowly and silently climbed the tree, slipping from the branch next to her and plopping down in front of her. She jumped, startled, and her book fell out of her hands. I leaned over and snatched it out of the air, then handed it to her.
I could barely see her face under her hood, but I could see the annoyance and anger in her light green beautiful eyes and my grin faltered, turning into a frown. “You scared me, Kurt!” She yelled in frustration as she snatched the book out of my hand.
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to scare you. I should have thought better, I’m sorry.” I stammered out, running my fingers through my hair. f**k, way to go genius. Scare a traumatized person, that’s just perfect.
She took a deep breath, releasing it out slowly as if she was trying to calm herself down, making me feel even worse. “It’s fine.” She grumbled out. “Why are you here?” She asked, thumbing back through her book in disinterest.
“You were in my room this morning? I could smell your scent, did you need me for something? Anytime any day you need me just wake me up, I’ll always be there for you.” I blurted out, my cheeks flaming in embarrassment.
‘You’re amazing at flirting.’ Brandon choked out sarcastically. I gritted my teeth, staring down at my fingers as they gripped the tree branch.
She still hadn’t said anything, the pause growing uncomfortable. “Just forget I said anything, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked, I don’t care if you come in my room you could live in my room I wouldn’t mind at all it’s going to be your room soon anyway, I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” I rushed out.
‘You could live in my room? What’s up with that Mr. desperate stalker!’ Brandon rasped out, barking a laugh in my mind.
‘Would you shut up? I never had to try to make a girl like me before! I’m out of my element with Lilian!’ I screamed at him.
‘Then move on and get with a better girl!’ Brandon snarled at me.
‘I can’t do that, because I love Lilian!’ I yelled at him. He huffed, rolling his eyes at me as he cut the communication link. I took a deep breath, running my fingers through my hair. Why wasn’t she talking to me?
“I’m not marrying you, Kurt.” She finally said, making me flinch. I laughed hesitantly, scooting closer to her slightly. “Don’t laugh, I’m serious. I know our engagement was forced on us to keep the members of the Dark Wood pack happy but it’s been four years, they’ve integrated properly with the pack now and they probably won’t care. I won’t force my deformity on you or anyone. You could have any girl.” She barked out, snapping her book shut with a growl.
I stared at her flabbergasted. “Deformity? What are you talking about? There’s nothing wrong with you. It’s not forced on me either, maybe it was at first but I want to be with you, Lilian.” I said, gripping the branch so tightly my knuckles were white.
She flinched, her hood falling down and some of her beautiful pale blond hair spilling out. I could see all of her face now, red from blushing spilled on her cheeks, her freckles from childhood were faded away. I stared down at her soft full lips wishing she’d just let me grab her and kiss her.
Finally, she shook her head no, tears welling up in her eyes as she yanked her hood back onto her head. “Stop pretending! I know this is a chore for you, so don’t worry when I turn eighteen I will fight you for the title so you can be free to marry someone who deserves you!” She said, slamming her book back into her messenger bag.
“Me? Someone who deserves me? I’m not some amazing being, if anything it’s me who doesn’t deserve you.” I whispered sadly.
She continued to yell at me as if she didn’t hear me. “You have to follow me around to make sure I’m not going to go crazy again, I know how pathetic I am!” She yelled. I heard her breath come out jagged and looked up into her hood, seeing tears streaming down her cheeks.
“You have no idea how beautiful you are, do you?” I whispered to her, looking up into her hood. She gasped, her light green eyes piercing as they stared at me, watching as I lifted my hand and gently scooped a tear off of her cheek.
Her eyes closed and I leaned closer to her, lowering my face so it was diagonal to hers. She was shaking, but her eyes were still closed, and I brushed my finger down her cheek, lightly rubbing it on her lips. She parted them and I stopped breathing. My heart was racing so loudly I was sure she could hear it. I leaned so close to her that I could feel her breath on my lips.
I slipped my hand to her hood and slowly lowered it, running my fingers through her silky hair. It was a mistake, lowering her hood, I felt her stiffen in shock and she whimpered. I sighed, lifting my lips to her forehead, and softly kissed her forehead instead. She leaned away from me and yanked her hood back over her head.
Before I could speak she jumped down from the tree, her little body shaking as her hands clenched her bag tightly. “I’m not beautiful, and I’m sure you say that to all the girls right before you kiss them. You want to be with me? Then why were you kissing Beth in the bathroom? You’re just the same playboy you were when I met you, any girl will do. Stop pretending you want me just because we’re forced to be engaged. Don’t worry, I’ll be eighteen soon and then I can fight you for the title, so you can finally be free of me.” She snarled out at me.
“Lilian!” I exclaimed with frustration. Why couldn’t she just believe me? I admit I was a playboy when I first met her but did I do so much to ruin her opinion of me that she couldn’t look past that? What more did I have to do to make her believe me?
‘Just give up and find someone else. This one is too broken.’ Brandon said with a sigh as Lilian turned around and ran through the maze towards the packhouse.
I sighed, jumping down as I wiped a tear from my eye. ‘I’m not giving up on her. I’ll just have to try harder.’ I growled at him. ‘She’s worth it.’
