Beyond Strangers Lana • Kurt • others "So! After texting you twice last night and getting no reply. I called and then you switched off your phone." "No! Him" Lana corrected biting into a cinnamon roll. Beverly glared at the interruption and Lana waved at her telling her to continue. "So this morning I text you again and you replied saying 'Hey Hottie'." Lana eyes widened and Beverly continued. "I text you back asking what was wrong with you and guess what you text me back?" "Oh! No!" Lana said in horror as Beverly brought out her phone to show her the text directly. Girlfriend i'm too busy having a life this morning. So how about You go f**k a cactus and we'll catch up next year? Good? Good. Lana choked on her food and quickly swallowed down sufficient orange juice, to save herself. She turned to her friend in horror. "I'm so sorry, Beverly." "Figured out, it couldn't be you and I rushed down here as soon as could." Beverly said. "Who did you say has custody of your phone?" "Kurt Owen. Yes baseball Kurt." Lana said knowing Beverly would want to still clarify. "How-How did you both switch phones? I don't think you've ever met him." Beverly asked confused and curious. She knew everything about Lana and they've been best friends since forever. Kurt Owen from school was just way out of their league. "Well I met him--" Lana stopped recalling that Kurt had begged her not to tell anyone. Although she didn't feel like respecting his wishes, it just didn't feel right to tell anyone, even her best friend. "-at--at MacDonald's” We must have dropped our phones on the same table and mistook them." Beverly hummed finding it odd but believing the story nonetheless. Beverly stayed some minutes longer and then left having things to do at home. Lana sat at the back of the store, completely blocked out by rows of clothes, her legs crossed in front of her and breakfast unfinished. She brought out her-- Kurt's phone and saw a few missed calls , many app notifications and a few text. She scrolled through, opening the text messages sent from her phone. Sorry too. I'm having a really shitty week. My phone's a nightmare? Gosh, then what do i call yours? It's been bugging me all day. Oh and your mum said you should come out for breakfast. Thought you should know. You told my best friend to go 'f**k a cactus'. Who does that? Some pissed off teenagers. She wouldn't stop with the voicemails threatening meteors and tornadoes down on you. She obviously didn't mean them and why do you have to reply to my text? How else do I shut her up? Pink, that was the only way My name's Lana and i haven't replied to your numerous messages. I have respected your privacy. Maybe my friends are as annoying as yours? Kidding; if she got offended, tell her i didn't mean to. Can we meet today? Whoa, aren't we moving too fast. I mean, we just met yesterday. Now you're winking and it is creepy and we need to meet in other to switch phones. I need my phone. What if I say, I don't want to switch phones back. And why would you say that? Because without your phone you can't share the gossip of our yesterday’s meeting. Ugh, don't be like that.
