But what could he tell his father? Yes, he knew Nathanael might be the only one to ever understand him, but he was the previous alpha, one who respected the rules since the very beginning, he was one of The Elders, one who accepted to force him to wed someone that was not his fated mate. Aeolian did not hold any sort of grudges, but he felt that no one could understand him. So he decided against speaking about it in this moment. It was something new ever for him, something scary and unusual. Something you could not talk about anywhere.
The walk was silent, Nathanael did not ask any more questions. But the silence was soon broken when Aeolian heard his name in the distance.
“Alpha Aeolian!” There was a distant call from the far shore of the ocean.
The two men perked their interest towards the woman running towards them. It was Marina. She seemed a little troubled, even scared a little. When she approached them she bowed her head slowly In respect towards the two.
“You attention is needed back at the pack house. Both of you…” she spoke fighting for air a little.
Nathanael seemed a little worried while Aeolian did not think much about it.
They followed back to the pack house, where they were met by a very silent group of wolves that did not belong to the pack. Rogues? No. Neighbouring pack.
“We would appreciate it if you would decide to change in your human form so we can have a decent talk.” Aeolian spoke as he walked in and made his way to his reserved seat. The five wolves seemed to ponder on the option but agreed.
Marina led the guests to change in another room where they were brought clothes to cover themselves.
Aeolian shifted a little uncomfortable in his seat.
“Neighbouring packs come to us only if they need anything.” Nathanael spoke in a low voice. “I wonder what is it this time.”
“Mhm.”Agreed Aeolian as he leaned his head backwards slowly. His head filled with worries and thought about Elanor. Was she safe? Aaron was there, but would he protect her if needed?
His attention was pulled back to his surroundings when he heard a cough echo in the room. His eyes landed on the large man that took the seat across from him. It was the beta of the Lunae pack. Quite a bunch of hormonal teenagers, if you would ask Aeolian his opinion about them.
“How may we be of help?” Aeolian asked skipping the formalities, to the discomfort of his guests.
“We found dead humans on our hunting lands.” The beta spoke in a low voice.
“We did not put them there.” Aeolian mocked a little annoyed.
The beta rolled his eyes before speaking again.”You have not. We know that. But something did. And we are here just to raise awareness on this.”
“Yes. Most likely rogues. Thank you for letting us know again of this raising problem of our kind.” Aeolian spoke as he started to get up.”If that was it, I will-“
“It was not a rogue. It was a real monster this time.”
On his feet Aeolian stopped, his eyes fixing the man with a cold glare.
“I am sorry but we do not have the time to search for fairytale monsters right now.”
“It was a vampire.” The words fell like stone, heavy, shattering the inner silence of Aeolian.
He looked around, seeing everyone’s eyes on him. He retook his seat slowly, sinking in his seat again.
“How can you be sure?”
“The body was. .. Bled dry. It looked like dried meat. There was no single blood cell left in the organism. Puncture wounds around the body and no other wound.” The beta spoke, serious, leaning slowly towards the Alpha that seemed to be lost in thought.
“My troupes did not find any trace of vampires around this land. “ Aeolian muttered silently, his eyes moving between the five strangers.
“Neither did ours until we found the body. They are smart. most likely not very young judging by their hunting skills.”
Aeolian fell silent while everyone started whispering. After a few minutes of silence, Aeolian spoke again.
“And what do you want us to do?”
“Nothing. Nothing, really. I just wanted to let our neighbours be aware of this issue. Just raising awareness.”
“We will see to this matter. Thank you.”
Aeolian muttered as he got up and walked out of the room gesturing to Marina to take care of the guests.
A little confused, Nathanael rose from his seat and followed after his son into his office. The door shut behind them, and Aeolian walked to his desk. He leaned against it as his father walked to one of the cabinets and pulled out a whisky bottle and the two glasses there. He poured some for both of them and handed Aeolian his glass. They both sipped in silence.
“Vampires are not as big as a challenge as some think they are.”Nathanael spoke.”Some are actually reasonable. A pact can be established and there is no need for a fight.”
Aeolian did not reply. He downed his drink and sat the glass away.
“You have all the support you can get, you should not worry. No one will get hurt and we will make sure to tighten the safety patrols around our land. If anything crosses our path, we will have a diplomatic approach.”
“I am not worried about this.” Aeolian sighed deeply. “Why are we even enemies in the first place?!” Aeolian seemed exasperated.
“You already know the story. You have read it countless time. Stories we pass down generation by generation and-“
“And what? Poison our minds with every generation? Holding grudges since forever? How is this normal?!” Growled the young man, as he walked to sit down.
A little surprised Nathanael silenced himself. What was going on with Aeolian? He stiffened lightly and took another sip.
“You knew about their presence?”Asked Nat in a low voice, almost whispering.
Aeolian adverted his eyes and nodded his head slowly.
“No.”He spoke in case anyone was listening.
Nathanael narrowed his brows and moved his gaze away as he fell into thought.
“We will find a solution to this.“ He muttered loud enough for Aeolian to hear, before he left the room, leaving his son alone with his thoughts. The pack grounds were not a safe place for such talks and the proof for this was that when he opened the door, Marina was standing there in silence. She jumped when Nathanael almost bumped into her. She bowed her head immediately and moved out of his way.
Left alone, Aeolian got up and started to pace around. He could not leave now. Marina was suspicious and he did not know if Nathanael was onto him or not. He could not risk being followed right now. Wait for the night and leave only after everyone, or mostly everyone was asleep.
After Aeolian left, Elanor took care to get everything in order, clean the bedroom and change the sheets before heading out for work. The female was a kindergarten teacher and she loved her job dearly. Yes, she had the money to live a happy life without working, but it would be too boring to just wait around for eternity. Kids were always a passion of hers. By the time she was dressed and all ready, she heard the fuss downstairs. When she got downstairs, she found the blond man in her living room, taking care of the door as he was told last night. A little uneasy, Elanor watched the man in silence. He seemed to ignore her completely. With her arms crossed on her chest she continued to watch in silence as the man worked and ignored her.
“Thank you for taking care of the door. I appreciate it.” her voice was soft and and hesitant, as she approached slowly. “If you need anything, a coffee, tea or a snack, let me know.”
She stopped at a safe distance waiting for a reply that seemed to never arrive. She understood he did not want to have anything to do with her, so she just nodded and walked away. She pulled her coat on, grabbed her bag and drove away to the kindergarten. At least she could spend some quality time, not worrying that she would be attacked anytime. As she drove, a small thought sprouted in her mind. Should she move? Find another place to stay? Maybe move in with Laura for a while…
She was pulled out of her thoughts when her phone rang. A little curious, she reached for it an answered. She did not even get to say hello, when Laura started to rant about the news she just heard.
“Laura, slow down. I’m driving and I can’t understand you!”
“They found a couple of dead bodies this morning! They say there is a monster prancing around and that we should limit our evening walks!”
A monster?
“Maybe it’s just a bear and they needed a good catchy headline.” Elanor reassured her friend.
“Regardless! Can I come spend the night? I’m…I don’t want to be alone!” Laura pleaded to her friends Amusement.
“Of course you can, Laura.“ Ela agreed with a soft smile drawn on her lips. “I got to hang up! I’m at work. See you tonight!”
Elanor hanged the phone and set it away.
A monster.. killings… this was a little unusual for such a place, but she did not give it too much thought right now.
She stepped out of the car and for a second she paused in the driveway of the building, looking around. Was she being watched? Her eyes narrowed slowly. She could not feel any wolf around, there was not scent of such thing around. But what else could it be?
She was pulled out of her thoughts when something collided with her legs. She looked down immediately, finding one of the child wrapped around her legs and giggling madly. With a head full of curls and very mismatched clothes, the child seemed frenetic about seeing her favorite teacher.
Ela picked the child up in her arms and walked inside, deciding to forget about the weird feeling of being watched. There was nothing that could possibly walk around to stalk her like this. She has been living here for a while and nothing peculiar ever happened, so why worry now?
