My expressions were mystified because the number belonged to Los Angeles, I had no one with whom I exchanged my number apart from Joe. I answered it.
“Are you Ezra? This is Tanya’s mom.” The voice from the other side was as sweet as honey. Even though I didn’t know who Tanya was, that polite tone forced me to talk sweetly in reply.
“Yes, I am Ezra. May I know who you are?” I spoke in a formal manner. That was my biggest quality, no matter how f****d my brain was,. I could be able to shift my tone from f*****g rude to a polite one.
“I loved your profile on LinkedIn and wanted to hire you as a tutor for my little daughter. You are an Economics major, right?” she added. It was not hard to find my profile on LinkedIn because there were just a few girls with Economics majors, luckily I was one of them.
While coming to Los Angeles, my first step to being independent was applying for a job. I have not graduated, so it was possible for me to get a job in any well-reputed company and asking for money from mom would be more humiliating than anything else. I could only hear. Mark did it, your dad would never do that.
“When do you want me to join?” I asked her, hiding the apathy of my voice. The sooner the better!
“Just a small interview and you will be confirmed.” The other response.
I gritted upon her words and made me feel like some fool. She just told me that she loved my profile and now she talked about a small interview. Isn't she satisfied with my portfolio?
“Okay, I am a high school student so I will get my free time in the evening.” I made it more specific yet mildly irritated.
“Six o’clock sharp,” she said and hung up.
I stared at the phone for a while and a message popped on its screen. The address. She was giving better pay for a tutor. I shouldn’t have missed the chance.
I was in the gallery and distracted by the screams and yells on the ground.
“Eric... Isn’t it a team game? Will you let us goal?” Our own teammates were upset with Eric because he again scored the entire goal alone instead. But it seemed like he never cared about anyone else. For him, the team's winning was crucial for him.
Among triplets, I was attracted to Eric the most. His personality was different and athletic, he was more aggressive than his other brothers. I mean in the canteen, I witnessed it myself.
His Brother had the same charm, but as Joe told me before, Eric focused on his body more than anyone could have. The way he enthusiastically beats each and every goal and confirms his team's win. It was a one-sided match.
“Ezra... Are you interested in football?” Jessica caught me staring at Eric. I stole my eyes and looked around. I was never interested in sports, while in public school I always skipped sports, making excuses about my period so that I could rest somewhere and read my favorite book. But I didn’t realize I had almost started the game for more than half an hour.
“Today we have the finals of our school’s football team. The winning team would be selected for IFWA.” Jessica arranged her books in her hands.
“IFWA?”
“International football of the Wolf Association.” Joe seemed excited. I raised my brows. That was something new. I tucked the books into my chest and we headed to the library. I wanted to make a library card to borrow some books. I heard this school’s library had a rare collection of books.
“Semi-finals?” I never heard a thing.
“Yeah! Our class won the semi-finals against our seniors, for reasons you know.” She gestured at the turf.
Downtown Wisdom school also focused on some other activities rather than studying for a pack. They say all the wolves grew up by seeing household chores and budgets. Everything but to cope with the modern world, they were preparing wolves for future generations. They were more indulgent in human activity so that wolves would never be left behind.
I was hungry so I just bought a packet of chips on the way and we arrived at a football ground. The match had just finished and the Red shadow pack won. Eric was fully drowned in sweat, yet he smelled like jasmine. The girls ran crazy over her but Eleanor managed to stop them outside of the turf.
I found Eric staring at me with irritated eyes. We had developed a hate relationship since we were in the canteen. His knuckles were still rolled into a punch. Plus, I had answered instead of him in Economics class, which agitated him. Whenever he stared at me, I just took my gaze away.
“Eric, Red shadow pack won!” Joe stared at the scoreboard and said.
“Wasn’t the result so obvious?” Eric threw a ball towards me with frustration, but Eleanor caught that football before it hit my face. I was startled to death.
“Congratulations,” Joe congratulated him. He smiled and shook his head.
“Congratulations!” I said with a mean smirk on my lips. Even though we had a sour connection, I watched his game and was literally impressed.
“Do you really mean it?” His brows knitted. “Your expression isn’t saying it at all.” His sharp eyes got even sharper. I never thought he was noticing my every detail, my mean expressions.
“I am never interested in football or any sports.” I said, deliberately knowing that he was an athlete and missing his lectures for practice.
“Still you stood in the corridor and watched the entire game till the end.” I was stunned when he said it, how he could see me when he was busy scoring, and he alone scored 6 goals out of 8. I turned back, the corridor was almost twenty feet away from the turf. I was literally embarrassed, it was making me another fan girl of his.
“Hey tiny, you missed the important lecture.” someone caressed my hair, which gave me Goosebumps. I turned back and found it was Eleanor. He smiled at me with his lips wide. He was a little generous towards me, Eric really had a bad temper.
“Alright! I am leaving.” I moved the straps of my bag again. Eric’s eyes lowered. “I have to make a new library card.” I waved my hands at Joe and left with Jessica.
We arrived in the library of Downtown Wisdom School, where the air was brimming with the traces of old books. I would not wonder if I found the Gutenberg bible or First Polio here. The environment was completely different from the chaotic one outside. As we step out, we can hear girls chanting the name of Eric more than any bible verses. Whereas Edward was reading his book peacefully, he was in the crowd. Ignoring the world around him.
The book in his hand grabbed my attention, The Alchemist, my favorite one. I could not resist for that moment and sat before him. I always needed someone to talk to about it.
“Hey...” I waved when I remained unnoticed.
“Ezra,” He remembered my name and that dazed me.
“This is one of my favorite books, The Alchemist. I wonder if you would love to read it too.” I hesitated, it was the first time that I had a one-to-one conversation with Edward. I found we had many things in common. The book reading, an Economics major, may be even more.
He closed the book, keeping it back on the table.
“Really?” His brows arched.
“It galvanized me the most. If Santiago really had stopped after getting robbed or the merchant's daughter had not encouraged him, he would have ended up being a shepherd for the rest of his life.”
I spoke about my perception of Santiago. His lips curled downwards and he fixed his specs, which gave him the sincere look, the total opposite of Eric.
“At one point, he was ready to give up the treasure, he considered her worth more than treasure. She was one of the main reasons for his fear, isn’t it? How can Santiago become weak in front of a woman he loves?” He spoke with his perceptiveness that dropped my jaws. His point of view was completely different from mine.
“Do you think so?” I just gave a smile. "Isn't she the reason that he reached the treasure too?" I added.
"What if it's just a trap? What if the Merchant's daughter had snatched all his treasure and killed him? You never know the story after the end of the book."
My jaws dropped. I never thought about it. His single statement changed my imagination throughout the book. My expression turned haunted, he smiled.
“See you then”. He picked up his book and left.
I went back to the counter and got my library card. The school got over and I arrived home with Joe. We were sharing dinner at the table. My entire day was full of things I would not want another day either. The server went down for almost two hours. The poop-covered faced girl I spotted in the toilet was messing with Eric, middle son of Alpha Dustin.
“How was your first day of school?” Mom asked me.
“It was good!” I took a bite of the half cooked fish from my plate. I literally wanted to throw up.
“You did not attend one lecture.” Mom’s eyes got smaller. I realized she kept her eyes on me. I pretended to be busy having that uncooked fish rather than answering her question.
“I got a part time job,” I said out of nowhere. She raised her brows. “I am going to tutor a ten-year-old kid.” I said and her face smiled. She has never been this happy in any one of my sentences before. But today it was different.
“I am leaving for it, Tanya must be waiting for me.” I said and quickly finished my meal.
I picked up a water bottle in my hand. It was six past thirty and I should have reached the address.
The location was just near Mark's mansion. Heading down, I followed the footsteps shown in Google maps. I stepped and walked, within fifteen minutes I finally reached the blue spot on the map.
The location was the big white bungalow that I could see from Mark’s house. The excitement aroused in my heart, I walked inside with slow steps. I stepped onto the irregular tile stones that made the entire way.
Suddenly, I was startled by the barking of the dog. A German shepherd tied in the corner of the main door barking at me recklessly. It was jumping, holding his paws up, drooling at his mouth. I loved the dogs, but it seemed unusual and violent. It almost prevented me from getting into the mansion.
“No way..” I used my bag and tried to kick him. “Shu… Shu..” I tried to chase him away but he was stubborn.
“Please let me go inside.” I even tried to pet that dog but his sharp teeth and drooling prohibited me from it. Listening to the chaos that was going at the huge gate of that bungalow, one elegant woman, who must be around the age of thirty, stepped out. She was beautiful yet familiar in her face.
“Oh... You...” Her brows knitted in the middle. “Tutor?” She guessed. I nodded.
“Tommy, No.” She came and helped me to get inside. Seeing her, the dog tamed immediately. I just followed her inside.
“Tommy never troubled anyone. Goddess knows what happened today.” She said and asked me to sit beside her.
“My daughter, Tanya, needs a tutor. She wanted to get admission to London school of Economics.” She explained again whatever was mentioned on the website. I carefully watched that bungalow. No wonder the pay was good. Almost four times more than my pocket money.
“Ummm… Your grades are good but you studied in public school...” She curled her lip as if she was not satisfied with my previous school. “I don’t think you are suitable as a tutor, plus you got admitted by Red Shadow pack quota.” She raised her brows. The pack quota means some seats were reserved for the children of higher authority. I didn’t pay attention but Mark must have used that seat for me.
“Oh…” It was hard to keep a smile on my face when I was highly disappointed inside. She returned my passing certificates. It was a mild rejection for me.
“Ezra,” I heard a familiar voice and turned behind. It was Eleanor. He was smiling at me as well as surprised. I turned back and found Eric and Edward had been inside too.
“You...” I tapered my eyes. They threw their bags on the couch, made me understand this house belonged to them, and the woman sitting in front of me was their elder sister.
“Do you know her?” She asked with a strange face.
“She is the one who answered about the economic budget of the pack when Eric couldn’t answer,” Eleanor said, and laughed at him. Eric grinded his teeth throwing a shivering cold gaze at me.
“That’s because I was focused in the semi-finals.” He said and flaunted the trophy he had just won.
“Really, then she would be a perfect tutor for Tanya. If she can beat my brother, I hope Tanya can learn better from you.” The smile that vanished a while ago now appeared again.
“Congratulations Ezra. Tomorrow I will ask you to pay in the canteen.” Edward smiled, leaving a big dimple on his cheeks. Even Eleanor seemed happy, but Eric’s face turned cold as ice. He did not even bother to smile at me. They just walked through the stairs.
It took me no time to realise that the three rooms I watched from my window last night were theirs. And in the middle of the room was no one else but Eric. I imagined whatever happened and my body shook at once. It was Eric and his girlfriend Selina who were making out in that shadow. My heart ached as if someone hammered on my heart.
I started tutoring Tanya, and I loved it. She was a bright student and I didn’t have to focus on her. After helping her in her homework, my throat turned dry. I picked up the empty glass and walked out to refill it.
