CHAPTER TWELVE Stella and Carrie drove straight to Stefan Macmillan’s home. Stella hoped he would be there, and not out on the golf course. As they neared the grand front entrance of the golf club, she saw the house opposite that Mrs. Bruno had referred to. The mansion was painted blinding white and had a huge entrance porch with four tall pillars. These were painted in actual gold, as was the gate. They gleamed brightly in the watery morning sun. Stella glanced at Carrie, interested to know what her feelings were about this unusual home. Carrie’s face was deliberately expressionless as she gazed through the garish gates, and even at this tense time, Stella couldn’t suppress a smile at her careful lack of reaction.
