Part 5

Anna was moping in her room. After seeing Tylor, she couldn’t hold back her tears anymore. He looked so good. Maybe one word won’t be able to encompass the beauty he held. Anna had so many questions in her mind regarding his sudden appearance, but he was difficult to talk with. Not only that, but he wouldn’t even acknowledge her presence like she’s a stranger. Violet tried to make her understand that she should forget about him as if Anna hasn’t been doing that for the past one year and six months. He was a constant ache in her chest, unable to forget. Anna sighed at that, burrowing her face more in-depth into the covers. She did not want to leave the comfort of her room. It gave her warmth and a sense of comfort to be surrounded by her dozen pillows and no one to bother her. Her best friend was out shopping for grocery even though it was Anna’s turn. She was genuinely grateful that they were living together, or Anna would have starved herself because of her laziness. Just then she heard the sound of their front door rattling. It must be Violet. She was the only one with the key. Also, it’s been like three hours since she left. The twenty-year-old sat up, pulling the covers till her chest while staring at the hallway. “Anna?” Violets voice echoed around the room. A sigh of relief left her lips. “In here” Anna yelled back from her room, not even bothering to get up and push off the covers to walk outside. “I have a surprise for you.” Anna raised her brows, holding her breath as Violet quietly walked in. A surprise? Anna though with her nose scrunched trying to figure it out. “Tada” Violet threw her hands towards the door, making Anna turn up her head only to notice Jade walk in. A squeal escaped her lips. No way! She felt her eyes widen, seeing her other best friend standing in their bedroom. Was she dreaming? Anna pinched herself, wincing at the pain. Jade giggled at her. “Jade?” Her best friend jumped on the bed, nodding her head. Anna almost choked on her sob, throwing her hands around Jade’s neck. She heard her squeak into her neck, mumbling something equally dramatic but she ignored it. “I can’t breathe!” Jade made a sound, pulling away. Anna shook her head, “How did you get here?” Violet cleared her throat, “She didn’t. I had to drive back and pick the royalty.” Jade scoffed, glaring at her friend. “That’s because I don’t have a car and I hate public transport.” “Such a diva” Violet muttered. Anna bit back, her smile. She felt her chest tighten, seeing them both quarrel. It made her feel like they were back in high school, bickering behind her car set about silliest of things and involving Anna in the middle of it. She used to pretend it was not funny when, in reality, it cracked her up. “Now go get me a nice cold drink” Jade dismissed her, flicking her hand. “Who am I? Your servant?” “Exactly. Now go” Violet rolled her eyes, turning towards Anna. “Do you need anything?” “A coffee?” “I’m not paid enough for this!” Violet exclaimed shuffling out of the room. Jade and Anna laughed behind her back as she raised her middle finger in response. It shouldn’t be funny, but it was. Anna didn’t remember the last she laughed without having to force it. That moment felt ages ago. “So...how’s life?” Jade turned with an innocent smile on her face. Anna was half sure that Violet must have purposely dragged Jade into their s**t show so that she can comfort her. Jade Agha suffered the most after her high school even though she didn’t show it. Anna knew that she wanted to stay with them and share the flat. Do everything Violet and Anna planned together. It was evident, but her parents did not allow her at all. Even though she scored above average grades, she decided to stay back in the same town and continue with her education. Her parents didn’t want her to go away, something to do with city girls being spoiled and a terrible company towards their daughter. It also didn’t help that Jade was heartbroken by the person she supposedly was in love with. Eleanor. Anna still couldn’t believe that someone can be so hateful. Eleanor was the one talking with Jade under some lame name, and on the night of the prom, she broke up with Jade. Anna thought that Eleanor would be gentle to let her friend down, but she should have known better. Eleanor broke Jade’s heart via text. It was very unexpected and came as a shock for both of them (Anna and Jade). Anna genuinely thought that Eleanor would never hurt her friend, but then again, she threatened to go to Jade's parents. Why did she do all those things? Anna would never understand. Granted she wanted Tylor, but he was not interested in her anyway. “Anna?” Jade’s voice bought her back to reality. She blinked at her friend. “Yeah?” “I asked how’s life?” Anna sighed, “I know that’s not what you want to ask me, Jade. How much did Violet tell you?” Jade sneakily smiled, “Not much. Just bits and pieces.” Anna took a deep breath, turning towards her friend. Jade was utterly focused on her the entire time, silent and expressionless as Anna started to explain. She listened diligently even when Anna had to pause as to shed a few tears, occasionally her voice getting caught in her throat with the emotions. Her friend leaned forward. When she was finished, fat tears dribbled down her cheeks, and she was full-on crying. Jade had to hold her, rub at her back reassuringly for the next few minutes. “It’s okay, Anna. Let it out.” “I’m sorry” Anna jerked out of her hold, wiping at her red nose. “You don’t have to be. Tylor is an asshole.” She glared at her friend, “No, no. He’s not” Jade raised an eyebrow in her direction; her hands crossed together against her chest. “You broke up with him a year ago Anna, don’t you think this has gone on for too long?” No. Anna thought. Here’s the thing she couldn't just let him go. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't end the painful cycle of remembering that night and the look on his face when she walked away from him. That’s the moment Violet stepped inside, holding the tray in her hand. She had a frown on her face, which meant she might have heard Jade. The violet haired girl walked towards the bed and placed the tray on the nightstand. “One and a half year” Violet cleared her throat. “Ya Allah!” Jade shook her head. “Why did you even break up?” Anna didn’t bother answering, mostly since Jade was the reason for it. She shared a look with Violet. Initially, Anna decided to keep the reason all to herself because it would make Jade feel guilty. However, Violet was too persuasive and managed to pull out the truth from her. They promised each other not to tell Jade anything about it. “It’s Tylor! That should be enough reason” Violet jokingly said, trying to distract Jade. Anna flinched, “He is amazing Vi!” Jade frowned, “He might be. We don’t care, and I don’t like how much you hurt because of him.” “My hurting is my fault,” Anna blinked back her tears. “I wish someday you would stop believing that” Violet sighed, clutching Anna’s hand. Anna bitterly smiled, “Maybe someday.” *** The three of them spent half a day together. Anna was happy watching movies and eating rubbish takeaway with two of her best friends. Anna called Ezra, hoping she could join them, but she was busy with some renovations. They talked about stuff, not anything serious that would ruin their jolly mood. By the time they were done with another lame comedy movie, the clock had struck six. Jade had to go back home. Her curfew was strict, and she didn’t want to challenge that. “Let’s go” Violet nudged her. “Where?” “To drop Jade off.” “Do I have to come?” Anna groaned still in her sweats. “Yes please get changed and put on something decent. We are going to drive to the party later” Violet wrinkled her nose at Anna’s clothes. “What party?” Anna raised her brow. “Your college frat boys are throwing a party at their house, and we are invited!” Anna made a face, folding her hands together. “By we you mean you?!” “It doesn’t matter. We both are going” Violet lamely giggled, already checking her hair in the full-length mirror. “How do you even know those guys?!” “I go to their games. Duh” Anna raised her brow. Violet sheepishly smiled, “Michael is on the team.” Michael was the goalkeeper of their college team from Anna knows. He’s also the star in Violet's daydreams. After Violet's previous relationship didn’t work out, she’s after good looking athletic arrogant frat boys. “That explains it!” “I’m sure you will have fun,” Violet whined. Anna snorted, “Yay! I can’t wait.” ***
