I was jolted awake by the ringing of my phone. Groggily, I answered to find my mom on the other end. It was unusual for her to call me so early, so I knew something must be up.
"Good morning, Mom," I mumbled, still half-asleep.
"When were you planning on telling me about her?" she asked, her tone serious.
"About who, Mom?" I replied, confused.
"I know you're seeing someone, and I don't approve," she declared firmly.
"But Mom, you haven't even met her," I protested, feeling defensive.
"Eric, you're the heir to this family, and you will marry only the best," she insisted, her urgency apparent.
"I'm bringing her to the wedding," I said, attempting to defuse the tension.
"I'm renovating the house, it's not fit for visitors," she said sharply.
I chuckled, fully aware that my mom didn't want Nina in the house.
"Okay, Mom, we'll just stay in a hotel," I acquiesced.
"Good Chinese sons always return to their family house," she said before ending the call.
I let out a hearty laugh. This was going to be quite the ordeal. After freshening up, having breakfast, and packing a few things, I headed out. I instructed my driver to take me to Nina's place.
Forty-five minutes later, I arrived at her front door and rang the bell.
"I'm coming!" someone called from inside.
Nina's mom greeted me with a warm smile and pulled me into a tight hug as she opened the door.
"It's been a while, Eric. How are you, dear?" she asked affectionately.
Before I could respond, Nina called my name from inside.
"Hi, baby," I greeted her as I entered the room.
"Don't 'baby' me. Why is our flight so early? I'm so stressed out," she complained, flopping onto the bed.
"Don't worry, Nina, you can sleep while I pack your things," I reassured her.
"Okay, thank you," she said in her sweet voice before heading outside.
I could tell she needed a drink to unwind.
