The New Hampshire, meanwhile, remained out in the bay with the USS Arkansas, USS South Carolina, USS New Jersey, USS Vermont, USS Utah, and the USS Prairie, Admiral Fletcher’s flagship. The fleet of U.S. Navy battleships, destroyers, cruisers, gunships, tenders, and troop ships anchored in the bay had to be an intimidating and demoralizing scene for the people of Veracruz. During the voyage back to Veracruz, Jahnke was withdrawn and uncommunicative. I wasn’t sure he accepted everything that had happened as a function of fate. The twenty-one crates of gold and silver remained on the Comanche and were not confiscated by the U.S. Navy. He thanked me profusely for intervening. Geissler
