Chapter 20 busted

Elina’s P.O.V

  The next morning everyone was up bright and early, but Anna looked really sore and from the way she was walking I knew she had gone a couple of rounds with her mate last night, which made me chuckle. We all ate our breakfast and then went outside to start training. This was something new for this pack because they all knew how to fight and defend themselves, but they barely trained. Then again, who was going to challenge the highest ranked mafia pack in the world, but what else was there to do in a mafia werewolf pack? When everyone was finally outside Mercury started the training and we were all sparring against each other. We were flipping, kicking and punching each other and by the time training had stopped we were all on the ground, laughing so hard that we couldn't breath. Everyone had a blast and it felt nice to be able to do this, it actually felt like how my coven used to be before that asshole Vince took over. Mercury had left half way through training and was now coming back, but he had a serious look on his face.

  “Listen guys, this was just for fun. I know everyone of you already knows how to fight and defend themselves, some of you even have powers and I am very proud of all of you and what I saw today, but now we have a war coming and we need to be prepared.” Mercury announced, making all of us stand to our feet. What war? What is he talking about? I thought to myself and I wasn't the only one as everyone started asking the same question. Mercury raised his hand and everyone automatically went quiet, waiting to hear what he was going to say next.

  “I just got off the phone with one of the biggest Alpha’s under me and it seems that the vampire king wants me dead. He wants to take over my mafia, my pack and my family.” Mercury said and looked straight at me. I knew there and then I was busted and I was so scared, so I decided I would fess up and tell him everything after he had finished talking with the pack.

  “But we get along with the vampire king, you were the one who put Charlie in that position of power after Jessica and Lucas died, so why is he doing this?” Anna asked and it was then that I realised they didn't know what had happened to Charlie.

  “Mercury, can we go to your office?” I asked and he nodded. Anna, William and I followed Mercury to his office, where Cheyenne was already waiting for us. Mercury sat behind his desk and Cheyenne stood next to him, while Anna and William sat down on the couch.

  “Elina, why don't you sit down and relax, then you can tell us why your vampire king, Charlie, wants me dead.” Mercury asked, making me sigh as I took a seat. I thought for a while about what and how I was going to tell them everything that had happened and how it all came about, but I could feel the tension rising in the air all around me, so I decided it was just best to tell them everything and accept whatever punishment they gave me.

  “The one that you put in charge was Charlie and he was a great leader, it was so fun to be in such a caring coven after everything that Lucas and Jessica had done. I have a mate, Damien and we have been together for centuries, but then everything changed three years ago. A ruthless vampire joined our coven, asking for sanctuary and Charlie granted it to him. Charlie always wanted to help everyone he could, but the ruthless vampire challenged Charlie for his crown and Charlie accepted. He thought that he would win, but the vampire didn't fight fair and killed Charlie.” I said, explaining what had happened and that it wasn't Charlie who wanted him dead.

  “Charlie is dead, why didn't any of you inform us what had happened? We could have done something to help you. Why didn't any of you fight back?” Mercury asked, shaking his head and holding Cheyenne’s hand while she looked like she was in shock.

  “We couldn't, he took everything from us, every way for us to communicate except for the mind-link, but as you know we can only do that with our coven and our mates. Our king died because of him and now if we don't do what he says he will kill us. Each year for the past three years he has killed three of the coven, normally those that are mated and it drove the mates that were left behind mad with the loss, so mad that they ended up killing themselves.” I replied, stopping when both Cheyenne and Anna gasped. I watched as both William and Mercury clung to their mates, pulling them impossibly close as to calm them down.

  “That's awful, who would be so cruel as to do that to mates?” Cheyenne said, holding her hand over her mouth as Mercury sat her on his lap and tried to calm her anger down. I could feel it coming off her in waves and I knew that she was close to shifting, which I really didn't want to happen, especially while I was sitting in front of her and the only vampire here.

  “Now he wants me to find out your secrets and your weaknesses, though I have to say that I have found no weakness at all. You are a strong king and leader, pretty badass actually. I know that I somehow unconsciously left that spray out on purpose because I needed you to find out about me. My mate and I can't be apart anymore, it's killing us. We were planning to flee the country tonight. He wants to be with me and I him, but we have been having to sneak around ever since I was ordered to come here and spy on you. We have been watching you, but there is nothing for us to watch, you're a family and that is one of the things I have been desperately seeking with my mate.” I said, but suddenly I could feel someone trying to connect with me through my mind-link.

  “Elina, I’m here at the place we agreed to meet, but there are guards here and they are telling me to follow them. What's going on? Are you alright?” Damien asked, worried.

  “I’m fine, Damien. There's been a slight change of plans and I’m here in the office with Mercury and his family, telling them everything. Just follow them here.” I replied, mind-linking him back.

  “Okay, I’ll be there soon, love.” Damien replied and I ended the link, looking back at Mercury.

  “How did you know?” I asked and he just smiled at me. I only told him we were planning to leave the country tonight, but I never told him where I was meeting Damien, hell I only just told him this so how did he act so quickly?

  “I have my ways, I'm not the king for nothing.” Mercury replied and I would have rolled my eyes at his cockiness, but I was too impressed.
