Lucas
“Should I just get a chosen mate?” I asked myself while leaning on the rooftop.
It is my habit to go to high places when something is bothering me. Here I can feel the rushing wind without the need to run.
“Have you gone crazy? We were so lucky to be able to find our destined mate in a very short period of time but you want to choose another?” Ryker berated me.
“I don’t know, mutt! You should have seen my nightmare.”
“That is just a manifestation of your foolish mind!” he scolded.
“If I am foolish, then so are you!” I retorted. It seems that bantering with my beast is also becoming a habit now.
I looked around the university. Every she wolf here is a potential candidate for becoming my princess and later on, my queen. But no one seems to catch my interest.
‘Lucas, where are you? You’re already late for Miss Beatrix’ class!’ Zander tried to talk to me through mind-link.
‘Yeah, I’m coming now.’
I jumped down from the rooftop then used my Lycan speed to get to the room as fast as I could. When I opened the door, Miss Beatrix was already there.
“Good morning your Highness! Shouldn’t you be here five minutes ago” she hissed, and my asshole friends started snickering.
“I apologize.” I just mumbled before going to my assigned seat.
My mind was wandering elsewhere the whole time that the professor was doing her lectures. To be specific, it’s wandering around the human world. I was trying to give a face to my mate, because I couldn’t erase the image from the dream in my mind. I need to replace it with something else.
The whole class was a drag. The longer I stay here, the more my beast and I become restless. All I wanted to do was to run to where my mate was.
Lunch time came and my friends and I went to the lunch room to eat. My friends are making fun of something that I wasn’t aware of.
“Hey Lucas, what’s the problem?” Fredrick asked as he yanked my head.
“What problem?” I got confused for a moment.
“You don’t look like yourself, man!”
“Yeah, I noticed too, you’ve been acting weird these past few days.” Marcus agreed.
“Is it about the King?” Fredrick pressed more and I was taken aback.
Should I tell them about her?
“Maybe you just need to get laid.” Zander suddenly butted in from staring at somewhere.
That made me decide against it.
“Shut up Zander! I’m fine guys. Just not in the mood.” I answered and tried to change the topic because I couldn’t bring myself to open up to them. Even though I know that I can trust them fully, my head is in turmoil and I can’t decide what I should do.
Fredrick and Marcus kept on teasing me from time to time. It's a good thing that Zander seems to be lost in his own thoughts too.
“Do you want to sneak out again?” Marcus playfully suggested.
“No, those guards were a pain in the ass. I don’t think I can endure being followed by them again.” I scrunched my nose as I remember it.
“Then let’s just wait after class,” Fredrick said and we all just agreed.
Afternoon classes started and I felt worse. I can’t explain the dull ache that I feel inside my chest. I try to ignore it but it only gets more intense. It makes me feel weak.
“You deserve that.” Ryker suddenly appeared in my thoughts.
“It’s because you chose to run away from our mate. We need her. She will complete us.” He added.
“Ryker please… Please shut up, even just for once.”
“Why would I? She is also my mate. You don’t get to decide alone on this.” He hissed and I just gave up. I can’t win in an argument about this because I myself am still undecided.
He kept on telling me to go back to her. I got fed up and chose to close our mind link, shutting him out in the process. I need some peace of mind and I can’t have that with him constantly nagging and whining inside my head.
After school that day, we decided to go hunting in the forest. We raced to go there and, unlike before, I lost to Marcus today.
“There’s really something wrong with you man!” he teased.
“Whatever, I just gave way so that you will know how it feels to win.” I boasted and they rolled over in laughter.
“But seriously man, is there something going on?” Marcus asked again.
“Do we have a problem within the kingdom?” Fredrick pressed, and my patience was running thin.
“It’s nothing really. Let’s just go hunting!” I led the way and just ignored them even though I could feel Zander’s heavy stares.
“If you say so.” He shrugged before following me.
We slyly walked deeper into the forest where wild animals live.
“Let’s make a bet,” Fredrick whispered.
“What kind of bet?” Marcus asked.
“Whoever gets the biggest catch tonight will win.”
“And what’s the price?” Zander queried.
“Hmm, I don’t know, what do you guys think?” Fredrick asked back.
And we all fell silent for a moment, thinking about a good prize for the winner.
“I know the winner can ask anything from the losers,” Zander announced while grinning wickedly.
“I can ask anything from all of you?” I asked.
“Woah you’ve got a lot of guts in you, Your Highness!” Marcus said, chuckling.
“Don’t be so sure, our Prince, you might get to do any of our bidding.” Zander snickered.
I gave out a low growl in response.
“Let’s see then. See you all back here in half an hour.”
They easily agreed and we went on our separate ways to look for our targets. After a few minutes of looking, I spotted a giant warthog feasting on its prey. I smirked while watching him. He should enjoy his last meal first before I catch him.
It stands half of my human size and has long protruding tusks from its mouth. I can easily take him down even in my human form. To be fair to my friends, I can’t transform into my beast when we play games like this.
When the warthog had almost finished his meal, I approached him upfront. I wanted to have a good match even though the result is already known. It gave out a snarl when it saw me. Maybe he thought that I would take his meal away. I snarled back, then went closer to it.
It quickly jumped on me but I easily dodged its attack. I grabbed its tusk but it moved its head violently to escape from my grip. I held it tighter but it only caused his tusk to break in two. It made the animal realize that he was no match for me and it started running away.
I jumped and landed on his back. I used my arms to strangle his neck. When its body went limp, I tossed it on my shoulders, then made my way back to my friends.
Marcus came in at almost the same time. He was pulling a black panther by its leg. It was just a tad bit smaller than my warthog so I smirked at him.
“Ah, I lost again. That beast gave me a hard time and it wasn’t worth it.” He complained.
Fredrick came back next carrying a hyena that was smaller than our prey but sure looked nasty. He even has some wounds on his arms.
“What happened to you?” Marcus asked with a laugh.
“That animal is so small and yet you’re wounded?” I teased him more and he just tossed the hyena on the ground in annoyance.
“Where’s Zander?” He asked.
“Maybe he’s still struggling with his prey.”
We were laughing when a huge black bear fell in front of us. Zander was smirking in victory as he watched us awestruck with his catch.
“Where did you even get that thing?” Fredrick exclaimed.
“I thought they were almost extinct. Maybe you killed the last one of his species.” I said.
“I did him a favor then. Who would want to live in this world without anyone? We werewolves can’t even live without our mates.” He answered and it almost made me choke.
It made me think about her again. I wanted to curse Zander and his big mouth right at that moment. Now my beast is nudging me harder to open our mindlink and I did.
“But still, I won. I would still think about what I want from all of you.”
“Let’s head home then,” I said. My mind is now concocting another plan and Ryker surely likes it as he began prancing again.
When I made sure that the three of them were ahead of their own packs, I began running in the other direction. I still have some time left before evening. Maybe I can get a glimpse of her.
I ran like a mad dog. Well, a mad wolf for that matter.
“Are you going to get our mate now?” Ryker asked. I can imagine his wagging tail in excitement.
“No, I just want to make sure that she’s not a monster.”
“How dare you speak like that to our mate?” he growled ferociously.
“Relax, I was just kidding.”
In a matter of minutes, I was able to reach the waterfalls. I took off my clothes before I shifted into my Lycan form. Then I took them before I crossed the portal and ran to the familiar path that I took the last time. When I reached the plains below, I changed back to human form and put my clothes back on.
I carefully treaded the same way as I remember. It’s a little different now because of the broad daylight, but my wolf senses helped me find my way back.
When I reached the river, I was in awe. It looked more beautiful during the day. Water gently cascades from a small waterfall in the upper course of the river. The water is so clear even though it’s not that deep and the rapids are not that rough. I was tempted to take a dip but I was here for the sole purpose.
“What are you staring at, boy? Stop wasting time and just find our mate or I can find her myself.” Ryker snapped impatiently.
“Yeah, yeah. I will look for her now.”
I tried to follow her remaining scent that lingers in the air to find where she is now. She must live somewhere near here.
“Go that way!” Ryker growled at me.
“Stop ordering me around mutt! I know what I’m doing.”
I kept walking while trying my best to stay hidden although it was almost impossible with my size. I looked around at first. I can see everything even from afar and I took advantage of it.
I gazed around the forest, trying to feel any tiny movement or hear the faintest sounds. My forehead knotted when I spotted a house not too far from where I was hiding. I stealthily made my way there. It’s the nearest house to the river, so she might live there.
But even before I got near, the most delicious scent filled my senses. I stopped and just relish the way it makes me feel. My heart was pounding and Ryker was howling inside my head.
“She’s here!” he happily wailed.
I looked around and finally I saw her amongst some vegetable plots. She was busy watering them and, just like last night, I still can’t see her face. Waves of dark hair cover almost half of her upper body.
“Go get her!” Ryker nudged me from my trance but I chose to ignore him.
Carefully, I walked around to be able to see her face. I made sure that I was hidden the whole time. Right now my heart is hammering painfully inside my chest as I get closer to seeing her face. I never thought that I would feel like this.
“Can’t you get any faster?” Ryker growled once again and I swear I was so close to shutting him out.
“Stop being impatient or I won’t let you see her.” I snarled.
But my anger magically vanished the moment she turned in my direction to water the other plants. My breath hitched with the sight of her face. It was so far from the image on my mind.
She is the most beautiful that I’ve ever seen. Not even a single she wolf can come close to her splendor. Her wavy hair is as dark as the night and it frames her tiny face perfectly. She is wearing a white flowy dress that ends on her mid-calf.
Now I highly doubt that she’s human. Even without wings, I am so sure she’s an angel.
My angel!
