Aylee's POV
"Yes. And so we need more warriors on the front line," I explain to my dad who looks displeased about what I just said.
It is quite hard to impress him. He always thought that being an Alpha is a job for the guys. Unfortunately he got a girl child who he had to pass his title to.
"If you recruit more warriors on the front line, let's say the opponent uses a tactic to eliminate the defense line. Maybe through an arrow rain or a dagger shove by their front line. Then what?" He asks me back.
I don't have an answer to that. So I silently picked at my food. We were served stroganoff today. My mother is still in the kitchen, waiting to come out and have food once my father finishes eating and leaves.
They both don't really face each other. My dad despises my mom because she couldn't give him more heirs. A boy to be honest. After giving birth to me, my mom had a couple of miscarriages that ruined her. He was least concerned about her. They still sleep in separate rooms and I often wondered if that's how women are treated across the world. In all the packs.
"And why are you here and not at Alpha Farrell's party? I thought you should be on your way," he says and I nod.
I don't want to go. Because Colton asked me not to go. But as if I would tell him about that!
But before I say anything, my father starts speaking again. Oh how I wish he would go dumb somehow. I wish there was something for that.
"This entire pack is ruined the moment it is met with its fate. A female Alpha in a world where there are only male Alphas. In the last two years there had been attacks unlike any other times the pack members had witnessed. Now this pack is an easy prey," he says and I lost my appetite to eat now.
"If you go to Alpha Farrell's party now, he will have this pack under his feet with a flick of his finger!" He raises his voice a little which I am slowly coming to despise.
"What do you mean?" I ask him because I know very little about this Farrell guy. Colton asked me to stay away and now my dad says something else.
"Because he was born to an Alpha father and a Beta mother. In a world where Alphas are getting paired up with Omegas and no rankers, his parents were an Alpha and a Beta. The power he holds is unlike any other," dad tells me.
"There were and there still are rumors flying around a prophecy. That Farrell will eventually be the King. The conqueror. I guess we all don't have much to do anyways," he says and dabs the corners of his mouth and wipes his hands off even though he didn't even touch anything on the table. Not even his food.
"Diane!!" Dad screams and my mom rushes to the table, finally coming out of the kitchen.
"How are you doing?" He asks mom, to which she looks a little surprised.
"Of course you'd be good. After all, the only things you were ever useful for was for s*x and giving me at least an heir," he says.
Mom doesn't even cry anymore. I remember watching her cry growing up but when I was at the age where I understood why dad always lashed out on mom, she had already given up on her fate. She simply stands there and waits for him to leave. Which he eventually does.
"Make yourself useful by at least staying in your room when my mistress is arriving. She arrives in two days," he says and stands up.
He throws the handkerchief on my mom's face as he walks out. Mom doesn't say anything. She sits on the dining table along with me and serves herself a plate of hot meal.
I always wondered how she is able to keep all of this in her. It takes enormous strength and she has all of it.
"Looks like we are going to be hearing words a lot worse if she is arriving soon," mom whispers and I nod.
"The day end report, Alpha," Colton walks in at the exact right time and passes me a file. I take it with a nod. Not at all in a mood to smile or be cheerful. Even in Colton's presence.
"Prepare the horses. We are leaving for Alpha Farrell's party. We shall be there tomorrow evening if we start now," I tell him and witness his shocked expression but he bows and walks out nonetheless.
I don't want to stay here and face the disasters that my dad's mistress is going to bring like she does every time. She is only looting my father and this pack.
Now this is another reason I don't believe in mates or mate bonds. What if my mate is also a person with a classic male ego?
That's why I chose Colton. And I shall marry Colton. No one else.
