Chapter Four: The Heart Remembers

1317 Words
KAYLEE’S heart is trembling while sitting inside the taxi. She’s both scared and worried at the same time. The accident that happened to Grayson didn’t really happened originally. Her palms are clasped together, praying that her best friend is okay at this moment. She came back to life for him, he can’t be hurt, she cannot allow anything bad happened to him. Because she will do anything just for him to remember her. On that thought, Kaylee decided to call Ace, Grayson’s manager. She sent him a text message before she left the house but he didn’t reply. Her heart skips a beat when Ace answered and she immediately heard Grayson’s voice in the background. “Kaylee,” he said. “How is he? Papa told me what happened and I’m on my way there.” She heard him took a deep sigh. “He’s getting better. Actually, he just woke up about thirty minutes ago.” Kaylee felt relieved. She can even hear Grayson laughing in the background. He really is okay and with that she’s very grateful. “Did you tell him that I’m coming over?” “I did, but… Kaylee… uh…” “Why? Any problem?” “I think we have a problem,” he answered with hesitation. “What is it?” “Ummm… Grayson doesn’t remember you. He remembers everyone around except you.” Her chest started pounding hard. She felt the pain in her heart. So, that was it. The accident made him forget about her. She knew this was coming but even though she expects it to happen. It still brought her a lot of pain. How can someone who spent his almost whole life with her, in a snap of a finger, just suddenly forget about her? Kaylee found herself crying, sobbing while thinking about Grayson.           “Hey, you alright?” Ace asked.           “Yeah, I’ll be fine. I’m almost there.”           “Okay, take care. I’ll text you the number of his private room.”           After he hung up. Kaylee cried quietly inside the taxi. She cannot wait to see him. She just saw him last night and talked to him before she died. But it feels like she hasn’t seen him for a long time.           “Why are you crying?”           She immediately lifts her face and look at the rear-view mirror after she recognize the voice.           “Uriel?”           “Hi,” he answered.           He is not in angel form. Instead, he is wearing a Taxi Driver’s uniform and a black baseball cap.           “You’re driving this taxi the whole time?” she asked shockingly.           “Well, yeah, you just didn’t notice because Grayson occupy your thoughts.”           Kaylee took a deep sigh. “I’m sorry.”           “Nah, that’s alright. I understand. So, tell me, why are you crying?”           She sighed once again. “I just can’t accept the fact that his memories about me vanished just like that.”           “You already knew this will happen, right?”           “Yes, but still.”           Kaylee looked at Uriel again when he laughed.           “What’s funny?”           “Humans like you,” he said.           “What do you mean?”           He stopped driving and looked at her.           “You know what’s wrong with humans? You always want to get things easily. You humans hate it when things get tough for you. But what you don’t understand is this, when things get tougher, when your plans don’t go your way. That’s when you will call and need God. That’s when you will see His miracle. Do you really think when things get became too easy you will still remember Him? On one or few instances, maybe yes, but if things always get too easy. Do you really think you will still need Him? No, Kaylee. Believe me. I’ve been God’s messenger for thousands of years and I witness numerous times how humans forget about Him. Sadly.”           Kaylee paused and thought about what Uriel said. She can’t even deny it, and it’s hard to admit, what he said is right. Because countless times, she will pray for things she wants to get, but when God answered her prayer. She always forgot to pray and thank Him.           “If you will just trust Him, Kaylee. You will see a miracle right before your eyes.”           She nodded.           “We’re here,” he said.           When she looked outside the taxi, that’s when she realized that they’re already in the hospital.           “Thanks, Uriel.”           “I’ll be just around, call me if you need anything.”           Again, she nodded before climbing down the vehicle.             SHE HAD no idea how many times she took a deep breath before knocking on that close door. From where she was standing, she can hear Grayson’s voice and the familiar voice of his sister and Mom. For the last time, she took another deep breath and closed her eyes before she finally knocked.           “Kaylee.”           That’s when she opened her eyes. It was Ace who opened the door.           “Hi,” she greeted nervously.           “Is he awake?” she asked. Ace nodded.           “Kaylee!”           She immediately smiled at Sheryll, Grayson’s younger sister when she run and hug her.           “How are you?” she asked.           “I’m fine.”           “Hi Kaylee,” Grayson’s Mom greeted and hug her too.           “Hi.”           Finally, she looks at Grayson. Kaylee can see a big question mark expression on his face. Her emotions start to overflow. Her tears filed up on her eyes. The heaviness inside her chest are slowly fading. He’s looking at her as if he is looking on a stranger. But it doesn’t matter that moment, what’s important is she’s here now. She’s looking at Grayson. A day she thought will no longer happen.           “You guys want to grab something to eat?” his mom asked Sheryll and Ace.           “Okay, Mom.”           And finally, they are now alone on that room.           “They said you’re my bestfriend, I’m sorry but, I really can’t—”           Before he even finished what’s his saying. Kaylee run to him and embraced him tight. And there in his arms she poured out all her emotions.           “I really thought I’d never see you again. I came back for you, just to see you,” she said while sobbing.           “Ah… M-Miss, wait…”           “Please… let me stay this way for a while,” she begged.           From her back, Kaylee felt his hand carefully tapping her.           “I’m sorry, but I really can’t remember you,” she heard him said.           She finally let go and sat beside the bed. Then, she pulled out a photo of them together when they we’re still in high school and gave it to him.           “We’ve been friends all our life, Gray. We grew up together.”           Grayson stared on the picture. She can see the emotion building up inside his eyes, but there’s a lot of confusion.           “Did something happened before the accident happened? Did we fight? Are we in good terms?” he asked.           Kaylee paused. If she can only tell him the truth, the she died and just came back to life for thirty-one days.            “Nothing,” she answered.           He took a very deep sigh. “I just don’t understand. I remember everyone except you, as if my brain erased you completely.”           She held his hand. “Don’t force yourself, it might be bad for you for now. Your memories about me will come back. I’ll help you. I won’t leave you anymore.”           Finally, Grayson smiled at her.           “My brain can’t recognize you, but my heart keeps beating so fast and seem to remember you. I actually felt a lot calm and relax now that you’re here. Maybe you really are my best friend.”           She took his hand on her face and once again, shed more tears.           “You have no idea how much I’m happy to see you again,” she said.           “Help me remember you then.”           She smiled behind those tears and nodded. “Yes, let’s do that.”
