Chapter 4: Returned The slightest noise set Adam’s heart racing. It didn’t matter if it was the wind causing the heads on the wild oats to brush together; Adam heard danger in every sound. While many animals were asleep, he knew there were a good number who were nocturnal. He could hear their calls in the distance. Flying things, bats he assumed, were everywhere. His only consolation was that bats were blind. They hunted by sonar and even if they did detect him and River Boy, they had no way of knowing whether they had found a couple of men or a couple of wild boar. Insects, however, were another story. He had no idea whether they had the capacity to communicate messages to higher order animals or not. For his sake and the sake of River Boy, he hoped not. He had been swatting mosquitoes
