Evelyn couldn't figure out what to do. She tossed and turned and the period was not helping her mood either! Why had it come earlier to torment her? She groaned and headed for her little balcony. It had an amazing view of the lake across the street. She tried to lounge in the fresh air when her eyes landed on a premium car parked under her building.
She had been staying here for a week now and it was the first time she was seeing such an expensive car there. The more she drooled, the more familiar it looked. Her eyes popped out when she realized it was the same car from the morning!
The black sedan!
What was Sam doing here? And why? She was only an employee? How come he was so inclined to her? Several thoughts evaded her mind.
She rushed to the front of her building to confirm her suspicions. She may not have decided yet to pursue her work, but she doesn't want stalkers. By the time she was outside and got a closer look, there was no doubt left. It was the same black car. But this time, the driver's window was down and the person inside was smoking.
She hates smoke so bad! She was allergic to it. Although she wanted to charge and confront, she had to step back and wait for the end of the long cigar. It was already chilly outside and she had forgotten to wear something to cover her. She was only in her nightie.
"You want me to warm you up, baby?" Someone whistled.
Four thugs were skulking around the streets. Those guys were bad. And wouldn't think twice about hurting her. She wasn't looking for trouble. So she decided to return to her apartment and call Sam. That made sense anyway.
She avoided their comments and made her way to the entrance of the building. But somebody stopped her.
"Why don't we go together? I'll show you the stars." A nasty-looking boy showed his filthy teeth as he traced his finger on Evelyn's pretty face.
Evelyn jerked while trying to push him away. The door was only a couple of inches away. But another man jumped right before her and pulled her towards him. He was touching her inappropriately. Evelyn wanted to shout and scream for help, but her hands were clenched and somebody had already put a handkerchief on her mouth. Her only hope was the car parked across the road! She didn't wanna be violated! She would rather die.
The tears began to fall as Evelyn tried to free herself. She was beginning to lose hope when the man standing beside her and making strange noises fell on his face followed by a sound of bones cracking as someone trampled him over. He was groaning in pain. He must have a broken nose and few broken ribs. But his face was still facing the ground, so no one could tell what was the real impact.
"Who are you?" The man holding Evelyn left her as he went towards the silhouette.
"Liam!" Evelyn sighed.
She was happy it was him, even if it surprised her. She rushed to the side of him hiding behind his masculine frame. She felt safe as though no one could reach her or even hurt her with him at her side.
"Who do you think you are? A hero?" The man reprimanded as he took out a sharp pocket knife.
But Liam was quick. All these years of training would come in handy. He punched the thug in the face before he could do anything serious. But the stinking man retaliated and slashed his shoulders. Liam wouldn't budge on it. Determined to crush the wretched bastard, he shot a punch full of force breaking his ribs. The scoundrel collapsed right there, crumpling in pain.
"Go inside," Liam shouted. That was more like a command than anything.
Evelyn wanted to protest. He was bleeding. But one last look from Liam, she marched towards safety. She chose to be close enough to be able to help. Liam grinned at this. At least she was concerned about his safety. It was a good thing. They still had some hope.
But before Liam was able to do anything to the other charlatans, they left their companions and ran. Liam called a number, possibly the police. Evelyn knew she was right when she overheard the siren sound of a police vehicle.
"Inside." Liam never even took a peek at Evelyn when he walked in.
"And if those two also escape?" Evelyn had a hard time keeping up with the pace. Why was he in the rush?
“Do you really think they can get away in such a situation? Do I have to go back and break an extra bone or two?” Liam suddenly stopped knocking Evelyn over his body. It was like the wall of muscle. So tough. She could not help but wonder what was behind all these layers and layers of clothing.
Liam chuckled at her reaction. This was turning out to be better than he had anticipated.
"You should have been more careful out there. You are bleeding." Evelyn squeaked.
"I had training. Where is the elevator?" asked Liam, ignoring her worry. It was good to have her worried about him. All he wanted, though, was for the other thugs to be captured.
"Umm... There is no lift." Evelyn stuttered. She had no idea why she was scared to say she was staying in an elevator-free building. It was not a crime.
"What floor?" demanded Liam. He did not complain or question. She was thankful. Even if he judged her choices, at least he was quiet.
"Sixth. But shouldn't we wait for the police? They might like to know what happened?" Evelyn scurried to match Liam's pace. He had already reached a floor when she had succeeded in making only a few steps further than her previous post.
"My lawyer will see to it. You don't have to worry." Liam retorted.
Evelyn sighed. It was best. She did not want to be the focal point of the debate in her new community. It was better if he left it to Liam to handle the situation. She had a thousand questions to ask him, but she spoke nothing more.
"Which one?" said Liam, arriving at the sixth floor. There were two more apartments. But the one with the wide-open door was Evelyn's. She pointed it towards it.
"You should not leave it open like this. And not go out alone in such a condition at such a time. It isn't safe." Liam lectured. He walked inside the apartment as if he owned the place. He swiftly sat on the only sofa and started texting someone.
"You should get it cleaned." Evelyn insisted.
Liam had completely forgotten his injury. All he cared about was her security, and now he had to make sure that the other two thugs were caught. No one, absolutely no one, should be capable of touching Evelyn except him.
When Liam did not reply, she sighed. She brought the first aid box from the kitchen and placed it on the table opposite him.
"I can't do it myself." Liam mocked. He was enjoying all of it far too much. But he was her savior. If not for his heroism, God only knows what would have happened to her. But it was him why she was in that place, to begin with.
She breathed a deep sigh and sat next to him, gaining another of Liam's intoxicating smiles. He was too handsome to ignore. It was doing things to her she has not felt in a long time.
"You are enjoying it too much!" She squeaked.
Liam unbuttoned a few buttons while slipping his shirt collar and sleeves to give Evelyn adequate access to the injury. She was carefully cleaning and nursing it. It required the doctor's attention, but it would be okay for the night.
The whole time Evelyn dressed him up, his body had become stiff from proximity. Her fresh smell seduced him and only he knew how he was controlling himself from not holding her in her arms. He wanted to taste those sweet lips again. But he has to be patient.
"Why are you here?" said Evelyn, dressing his wound.
"I don't know. Honestly, I do. But it's not that easy." Liam says in a hoarse voice awakening desires that Evelyn ignored.
Evelyn didn't say a thing while she was staring deep into his eyes. Why did he want to fiddle with her emotions? She has no time for nonsense. If that's what she was going to feel when he was around, it would be better if she left that job. It would take her some time to find a new job, but with her talents, that wouldn't be too difficult.
"You remember me," Liam chuckled.
"Of course I remember you. Who can forget about such humiliation on day one?” Evelyn swallowed her saliva. She would never agree that she remembered that night. It will be too awkward.
Liam snickered. She was trying to play the harder game here.
"I am sorry about that. It was my fault." Liam apologized. It's his fault Sam insisted Evelyn get changed.
"No. Sam was being thoughtful. Who knew it would happen? I have a feeling she does not like me." Evelyn tried to neutralize the tension with a small laugh of her own.
"That means you are not leaving. Again." Liam sighed with relief. It was as if a pressure of a thousand tonnes had been raised from his shoulders.
"I think it is better if I leave though. The way it all worked out would just create nonsense theories.” Evelyn knew gossip would spread. Liam had been too protective of her. No employer goes for that extra inch.
"Let them speak Evelyn. Why do you care? Isn't it better if they think you are close to me? No one will dare to be mean to you." Liam tried to reason. His heart was fluttering with fear. He can not let her go again. The more she was around, the more he wanted her. Why was she so tough? Any other girl would have felt flattered.
"What about Daniella? She will make my life a living hell." Evelyn chuckled. Liam's heart jumped all at once when he saw her smile so openly. It was breathtaking even in this simple nightgown with no makeup.
"I will figure out something. We will get through this." Liam picked her hand between his. Evelyn's heart raced at that. His eyes were sincere. But it was too much. They were almost strangers and yet sitting comfortably hand in hand in the middle of the night alone in her apartment. This was freaky!
"There is no we Liam." She pulled her out in a jerk. She can not let this man enter her life and break her focus.
"Promise you won't quit at work and I'll leave." Liam tried to negotiate.
"I can't promise anything like that. You know it." Evelyn sighed. It was getting harder and harder for her. This stranger hot billionaire was too much for her to handle. He was swiftly drilling his way into her mind.
"Fine. At least accept you remember me from that night. I know you do. It is all over your face." Liam was desperate.
"Will you leave then?" Evelyn asked. If this man goes out now and she leaves this job, there was practically no way that their paths would intersect again. She was able to escape earlier, she can do it again. All she needed was him to leave now.
"I will," Liam promised.
"I remember you. I stalked you a little bit on the Internet sometimes later." Evelyn was giggling. It was awkward to accept, but it was comforting. They shall never see each other again.
"It is so weird you even remember me. You are the famous playboy billionaire. I am only a one-night stand. I am just another ordinary girl. I don't understand any of this. And it scares me, Liam. That is why I want to leave. I can't do complicated right - " Evelyn drawled.
But before ending her sentence, she felt something hot on her lips, demanding an entrance. She should have pushed, run, yelled, or done something. But instead, she spread out her lips wrapping her hands around his neck.
A sweet moan escaped from Liam's mouth as fireworks exploded within him. One thing he was sure of if it wasn't before, he wouldn't let Evelyn leave his life again!
