It was Evelyn's first day at her new job. She was feeling so strange to live in the center part of the city after all those years. She was hoping Ava and Nate didn't live in that neighborhood anymore. It was her bad luck to have her new office close to this area. She can't stay far because she was a heavy sleeper and wakes up quite late. Everybody has their shortcomings.
It was well-paid work. So, Evelyn had no problem renting that little flat. It was not fancy, yet enough for her. There was a small kitchen as well as an adjoining room.
Her small cozy bedroom had a balcony attached to it with a marvelous view of the lake. She was lucky to have such a good apartment in that budget. It was possible since her flat was on the 6th floor, and the building did not have an elevator. She could use this little exercise, Evelyn thought to herself as she brewed her coffee.
Her phone dinged with a message from Rosie. "I know you will rock this job. Just don't fall her the hot brother! Not that you are into humans! -XOXO"
That was so Rosie. She knew her past. But she still won't stop playing the matchmaker. It was her giving Evelyn a clue that there was a good-looking man she might like. As if he will spare me an eye? Who am I? Taylor Swift? Huh!
"There's no man hot enough to break me. But thank you for being positive.” Evelyn quickly texted while drinking her coffee. But it was a reminder of Liam. She could not help but blush at that. Maybe there were some exceptions. He was from this planet. Was he?
"You will see..." Rosie texted back. Evelyn did not want to pursue this conversation, so she did not respond. There was no one, not even Liam, who could change her mind. That night was a drunken mistake. Something like that will never happen again.
Evelyn was wearing the new dress she put together for the first day. It was a simple knee-length black skirt and tailored button-down off-white shirt. She paired them with a heel. She looked presentable, but not too much to draw unnecessary attention. She was not the type to be at the center light.
Evelyn walked to her office as she had already spent a lot on her new flat and clothes. Now all she wanted was to save. Also, it was not that far away. It was pretty good weather outside with a mild breeze. When she had taken the last turn, and her office building was almost visible, a black car stopped for her. At first, she was not sure, but when the window shield dropped down and Sam's head popped out, she knew it was for her. Isn't it weird for bosses to stop their cars for new employees?
"Evelyn, you might want to change that dress," Sam said as loud as he could without warranting too much attention.
"Why? Is there any dress code?" Evelyn could not understand the necessity to change her clothes. Were they too simple for his firm? She can't afford to go back and change them. She will be late for her job on the very first day.
"What day is today, Evelyn?" Sam raised his eyebrows as he let out a smirk.
Evelyn's eyes grew wider. It was Friday. The HR had told her that it was a business-casual day and it was not wise to wear something too formal on Fridays. How could she forget that? Why did she agree to start on a Friday! Her dress will attract unnecessary attention for being the odd one out. That was a risk she was not willing to take. But if she goes back, she will be late. There was no way she would get a Taxi right away. And what were the chances she would get one immediately after she finished changing? It was a terrible risk.
"Evelyn, you look amazing in that thing. I guess it is fine if you want to carry on. We don't want you to be late on the first day." Sam grinned.
Evelyn was not sure what to decide here. It didn't matter how she looked. She was the odd one out. Why was she so careless? Her eyes almost teared with that. She can not be late on her first day. She has to be the odd one out. Can she get fired already?
"Thank you for the warning. I have no other option. I will be careful next time." She said in a broken voice.
Sam smiled at her politely as he pulled the window shields and the car drove off. Evelyn let out a deep sigh as she marched towards her doom.
"Liam, you are not telling me something here. We are best friends." Sam groaned as soon as the black window shields were up. Liam seemed worried. Why was he caring so much for a fresher girl? From when he cared what they wore?
"Nothing. Don't forget that girl is Lydia's friend's roommate. That girl is early to the office. Not many people would be around. Arrange a different dress for her. Lydia keeps spare. She can change it in Lydia's room." Liam did not feel the necessity to fill in Sam yet. Honestly, he was not sure what to tell. There were so many things tangled right now. He has to wait for the right time. Why didn't he meet her just a few months ago?
"Fine. I will see what I can do." Sam knew Liam was hiding something. But he didn't want to push him just yet. He would wait for a while for Liam to come clean.
Sam called Lydia and then texted Evelyn. Even though Evelyn was hesitant at first, she agreed later. She took a mental note to thank Sam personally, properly.
She found the personal assistant of Lydia waiting for her at the front desk. She guided Evelyn to Lydia's room. A beautiful semi-casual patterned dress was waiting for her on the table. She was glad it was of her size too.
Once she was alone, she made sure everything was locked. She checked for cameras. She was half-dressed when she heard a knock on the door. Was it Lydia? The nameplate on the door said, Lydia.
When the knocking did not stop, she dressed as fast as possible. When she opened the door, it was the woman from the meeting. Was she Lydia? No, her name was Daniella.
"What are you doing here? Who let you in?" Daniella shrieked as she walked past her.
"Do you think this is a public place where you can change? Who do you think you are?" Daniella spluttered.
"I... I... Sam..." Evelyn was having a hard time speaking. Daniella was grunted and fumed without letting her talk much. She even called the front desk without listening to her. In no more than five minutes, two guards were there at the door, ready to throw her like a rag.
"Under whom you are working?" Daniella spoke to her with a cold voice.
"It's my first day." Evelyn squeaked. She wanted to tell more, but before she could complete it, Daniella was back to hollering.
"Such audacity! You are fired, young lady! Get out, now!" Daniella looked at her with venomous eyes.
Why was she hell-bend to destroy her? She was not even letting her speak. What did she do to get here? Where is the secretary? Where is Sam when she needed him? Why did she agree to change clothes? How will she afford anything now?
Evelyn's head started spinning as she was dragged out from the room by someone she didn't even see clearly. She didn't care. All she cared about was she was jobless, and it wasn't even her fault. No one would notice she was gone. It was such a big company! Tears welled up in her eyes, and before she realized they were streaming down her cheeks.
That is when a strong pair of arms pulled her from the other man's arm towards him. Her eyes were too hazy, and she was feeling too dizzy to know what was happening around her. But she could feel whoever this man was there, protecting her.
"How dare you drag her like this? You all are fired. Don't ever show your faces to me." He groaned. His voice was so loud and full of anger that it could make anyone shiver. He was fuming.
But Evelyn surprisingly found comfort in him. She was now leaning over his tall figure with her head lying over his firm chest. She was probably ruining his expensive blue shirt, but neither of them cared about it then. The man was angry like a beast, and Evelyn felt as if she was the most protected being in his embrace.
"Calm down! There has been some misunderstanding. Daniella didn't know of our arrangements and Evelyn never said her." Evelyn could hear another voice trying to control his rage. It was probably that of Sam. So was she not fired? Are they not going to throw her out? Evelyn clenched her fist, holding some of the cloth of his shirt. It somehow caught the attention of Liam, from everyone else to Evelyn.
"s**t!" He murmured under his breath.
Evelyn looked up to see the face of her savior. And her world froze. It was the most handsome man she had ever seen. Liam Wilson. Every time she was in need, why did she find herself wrapped up in his arms? And why was she feeling so good about it? As realization dawned upon him, she distanced herself from Liam. She looked at her surrounding. Thankfully, not a lot of people were there. But it was still a lot. Gossips travel fast. She could see threatening eyes of Daniella that were probably throwing daggers at her now. How did she land here? And why was Liam here?
"Let's talk inside," Sam said, looking at Liam and Daniella. They did not say anything but did as asked. Liam gave one final long look at Evelyn before leaving the place.
"Evelyn, do you want to take a day off? Anyway, it is a Friday, and you should join on Monday." Sam offered.
Evelyn would have protested it in any other circumstance. But it was all too much for her. And her head was still not able to process Liam.
"Who is he?" Evelyn asked, pointing her fingers towards a retreating Liam. That is all she wanted to know. How is he related to her new job?
"It's Liam Wilson. The other partner who did not show up the other day." Sam introduced Liam, wondering why Liam was so worried about somebody who even does not know him. Was it really out of concern because she Rosie's friend? The chances were so bleak. But nothing else made sense.
"Is it okay if I join back from Monday?" Evelyn looked up at him. She wanted to run away and get some space to think through. She was not ready for this. And the way he acted was erratic. Does he remember her?
"Yes, it is. I will ask someone to drop you." Sam offered. He wasn't a bad person. He knew someway it was her sister, Daniella, who has hurt her and humiliated her. He knew Daniella would never apologize. So it has to be him who has to work it up.
"No, I will be fine. I will leave now." Evelyn grabbed her previously worn clothes from somebody who was holding it. She did not meet anyone else's eyes and walked straight out of the main door to her home. What an odd first day?
Probably, it would have been better if she had ended up getting fired today!
