Chapter 2

The next morning, Isabella went to the airport with her adoptive family, and after a few hours of waiting the family boarded the plane headed to Massachusetts. Isabella spent the entire five-and-a-half-hour flight with her head against the window. There were moments when her family tried to make small talk. She contributed when she could but for most of the time, she kept her eyes fixed on the back of the chair in front of her, which was planning 13 going on 30. When the plane landed, the family of five made their way to baggage claim collected their bags, then left the airport in their weekend rental. “Alright college girl, how does it feel to be on campus?” Kenneth asked the moment, they got out of the SUV in front of Maseeh Hall. Isabella looked up at the tall brown building and smiled. “I’ll let you know when school starts,” Isabella said. She then turned around and started grabbing her things out of the car. “Come on slacker help us. Your sister’s floor is on the third floor, and this is a lot of stuff,” Ava said. “It’s only a lot of stuff because you kept buying things. Issy was fine with two suitcases,” Evan protested, as he grabbed the 55-inch TV out of the back seat. Before they got to campus, Ava told Ryan to pull over at a Walmart. 30 minutes later they walked out with bags full of things Isabella was sure she wouldn’t need. Still, she was happy that her parents cared about her needs. “Enough yapping and more grabbing. Come on we don’t have all day. I wanted to check out the local restaurants,” Ava retorted. Issy and Kenneth laughed and did as they were told. Many freshmen were moving in that day so the campus was buzzing with activities. Some younger children were running in the hallway. Some were throwing frisbees while others were just walking down the hall ignoring it all. “Wait is this place coed?” Ryan asked as they approached Isabella’s room. His face was full of concern. “Dad please you’ve seen the brochure,” Isabella said, as she pulled out her key and unlocked the door. Isabella’s room was completely bare with only one bed and a dresser inside. Ryan let out a sigh of relief when he saw the single room. “Thank God,” he said, as he placed his hand over his heart as if to stop it from beating so fast. “Really dad huh?” Ava said with an eye roll, as the family moved all of Isabella’s stuff inside. “You guys can just leave everything there. I can move all my stuff in when we get back,” Isabella said. “You sure honey? We can help?” Ava asked, as she placed her hand on Isabella’s shoulder. Isabella nodded then said, “Yeah, besides, didn’t you want to see the sites before eating?” “True? I still can’t believe you chose someplace this cold. Cal Tech is just as good and it’s warm. Plus it’s only an hour away. By car,” Ava said. “I know. I know. But M.I.T. was my first choice and not everybody can get into their first choice,” she said as they made their way out of the dorm room accidentally bumping into the RA on their way out. The RA was a tall beautiful girl with long blonde hair, hazel eyes and long legs. She had the kind of beauty that screamed pageant queen. “I am so sorry,” Isabella said, innocently. She then causally lowered her face in order to stop the RA from seeing her face. Because of the scar, Isabella rarely wore her hair up. Instead, she wore it down an over her eye with a baseball cap on her head. “It’s fine?” The RA looked up at Isabella. “You must be Isabella Hart right?” The RA asked. Isabella nodded. “I just moved my stuff in.” She informed her. “Great. I am Rebecca your RA. Do you have enough time to go over the rules?” Rebecca asked as she extended her hand towards Isabella. Isabella reached her hand out towards Rebecca and the two exchanged handshakes. “I don’t think that’s a problem. Mom dad?” Isabella asked, looking over at her parents. “Will it take long?” Evan asked. “I don’t think that should be a problem. What did you say your name was again? Rebecca. Hi, I’m Isabella’s brother Kenny. Nice to meet you,” He said, snatching Rebecca’s hand away from Isabella’s. Kenny’s father quickly grabbed his son’s ear and pulled him to the side. “Forgive my son. He was dropped on the head too many times as a baby. Now what can you tell us about the rules?” Ava asked. Rebecca laughed in amusement then went on to tell them everything they needed to know about the dorm, “its not a lot of rules just a few. Smoking isn’t allowed indoors including vapes and m*******a. Pets are not allowed on campus unless they are fish. The bathrooms are shared. There is a gym on the fourth as well as the media room and dance room. The Dining Hall is on the first floor. You do have your meal plan correct,” Isabella nodded, and Rebecca continued, “Great. Normally freshmen and sophomores are required to share a room, but it looks like you were given a single,” She questioned. “Yeah, I worked it out with the dean,” Isabella explained. Since she scored a perfect score on her SATs and ACTs and already completed some college credits, she was allowed to choose her living arrangements and she chose a one-bedroom. “That’s amazing. There is no curfew. Just make sure you get to class on time. Teachers do deduct points for being late. Do you have any questions?” Rebecca asked. Isabella shook her head. “Great then I will not disturb you anymore. If you do think of anything, my room is right down the hall. Room number 3017 “Thank you,” Isabella said, wholeheartedly. “Yes thank you, Rebecca, I will make sure to visit you whenever I need you,” Kenny said flirtatiously. Ryan grabbed Kenny’s ear again and dragged him towards the elevator with Evan behind them. “Thank you. I will.” Isabella said. With that she and Ava went to join their family at the elevator. The moment they left, the smile on Rebecca’s face faded and she wiped her hand as if she had just touched something disgusting. Just as she was about to walk to her room, the door behind her opened revealing a twenty-year-old man carrying a towel and his phone, looking like he was about to hit the gym. The guy was tall with a muscular build. He had dark brown hair that was cut into a crew cut. His chiseled jawline and thin lips made people fawn all over him and his hazel eyes were so bright were almost glowing. But his attitude was hard to handle. The second Rebecca saw him, a huge smile spread across her face and she attempted to jump into his arms, only for him to dodge her. “Tyler what gives” Rebecca asked, sounding aggrieved. “What do you want Becca I have things to do,” Tyler said, annoyed. “What do you mean what I want? I text you yesterday and you never text me back,” She said, in a baby voice with a hint of flirtation in her tone. Tyler rolled his eyes then said, “Why should I text you?” “Because we are a couple,” she said, feeling unsure and wronged. Tyler let out a low chuckle and then said, “Since when are we a couple?” “Since two nights ago when we,” she lowered her voice so no one else could hear then said, “you know, slept together.” Again Tyler laughed, “You must be mistaken. I never agreed to be your boyfriend. Besides the s*x wasn’t all that great anyway,” He said, then attempted to walk away only for her to step in front of him. “What do you mean. I thought,” she started to say. “You thought wrong. You were fun to chase, but now that I’ve had you, I bored. It’s on to something new,” he said. “New. No. I can do better. If you want I can try again. It was only my first time,” she said, throwing herself at him. “I’ll think about it after I hit the gym. But as far as you being my girlfriend, that’s never going to happen,” with that he walked away, leaving her standing there looking stupid.
