Adara was startled awake by the sound of sirens. The blue and red lights flashed through her window. She got out of bed quickly and ran into the hallway as the paramedics pushed a gurney down the hall with Juniper strapped onto it, groaning, and crying.
“What’s going on?” Adara asked, but they all ignored her and Ramos came running behind them.
“The baby, the baby …” It was all he could get out as he pushed her aside and ran down the stairs.
Adara looked through the window as they loaded Juniper into the ambulance and drove off. The house seemed eerily quiet, and she sat down on her bed, not knowing what to do.
