Chapter 1: He won't like you
It was a hectic morning. I was stuck in traffic; I had a job interview in 30minutes and there was still no sign that this traffic will move soon. I sighed in frustration, staring at the red light counting down with it. Until it turned green, I didn't wait one second I zoomed off. Only to see a ridiculously expensive car from my review mirror. The owner of the car looked mad, and he kept hitting his horn. And I quickly turned back, mouthing an apology, then continued with my reckless driving. I was going to be late nope. I was already very late. I ran out of the car like a madwoman, stopping by the mirror in the large skyscraper to look at my already messy mid dark brown hair, my sleep deprived brown eyes and wrinkled suit. I was not looking my best, but I had no choice. Right now I'd do anything to make a living without my ex rich husband. I was so used to him controlling me and making my decisions. I quit my job and didn't bother to attend college. Now I was back in square one, but I could do this. I could definitely do this. Once I stepped into the lobby and saw the serious-looking receptionist in her crisp white suit. I just knew that I could not do this. "Miss Cross?" "Y-yes, that's me." I stuttered, I just had to flipping stutter. Her smile was tight and if she was trying to be polite, I couldn't tell because she was giving off such scary vibes. "You're late." I chuckled nervously. "I was stuck in traffic." Her plastic face didn't budge but I could swear I imagined her arch her brow and say "really?" "Luckily Mr Darlos just arrived. He will see you now." She said with a tight-lipped smile, and I swallowed nervously. "Wonderful." She walked down the hallway, and I followed. I have been to a lot of companies in the past month and I mean when I say. I have never seen a building cleaner than this. It was white from top to bottom, not a stain or scratch. Even the chairs were so brand new they looked like they had never been sat on. We arrived in a small waiting room and about one hundred people were sitting and waiting like it was a movie audition. All dressed so neatly it made me feel under dressed. "You may wait here. Your number 100," the lady said. "Great." I said sarcastically. My palms were sweating. Everyone who went into the office came out looking traumatized or would just break into tears. A tall model like lady sat beside me, dressed in a white dress and heels. Her hair up in a tight bun, she scrutinized me with her gaze. "He won't like you," she said to me bluntly. And I blinked "Excuse me?" "Mr. Darlos is a perfectionist. Your hair is down and messy. Your dress shirt isn't properly ironed and you have ketchup on your lips." She scolded me and I instinctively whipped my lip. She smirked. "You should just go home or you'll run out crying like the rest." I shook my head "You must be mistaken miss..." I looked at her name tag "Barbara, please learn to speak to others politely. Thank you." Barbara rolled her eyes and didn't speak to me again until she was called in. My hands were shaking, I was taking deep breaths. Not to mention I was hungry, my stomach growled and my butt was sore from hours of sitting. I was not in my best mood, as my number was called. "Number 100?" "Here!" I got up at once and moved towards the door when Barbara came out of the office. She smirked. "I already got the job. So don't even bother." She said confidently, then walked past me. My goodness, she was so bloody rude! I walked in and felt my confidence fly out the window when I saw him. Glass on his straight nose, eyebrows drawn together in deep concentration, dark hair curled slightly. Full heart-shaped lips and a sharp jaw. Holy lord, he was beyond handsome. He was gorgeous. The office was neat, in fact neat was an understatement. Normally files would be arranged on the table in stacks, but his where all filed and papers didn't lie on the table at all. Only the one in his hand, which was my resume I took a deep breath, ignoring my immediate attraction to him, and walked to the table, then took my seat. "Good morning, sir." He raised his head slowly and the most heart stopping set of hazel eyes trapped me in their depths. They were cold, empty eyes, yet my breath came in gasps as they held me hostage. "Did you hear me?" "Sorry what?" I had been gaping at him like a fool. I didn't even hear what he said. "I said who asked you to sit?" he asked sternly My eyes widened, and I jumped to my feet. "Sorry Sir." "Miss Alexa Cross married august 3rd 2022 divorced august 13th 2023, no kids, no college diploma only work experience is being a server during highschool." He paused, looked at me through the rim of his glasses. I swear, my heart hit my ribcage as I waited patiently for his question. "Why did you get divorced?" His question took me by surprise. I didn't expect that question in particular. "I-I um, my husband and I didn't get along," I said, guarding my thoughts since the topic was a sensitive one to me. He scanned me from head to toe. "Your hair is unkept, suit wrinkled and shoes undone." "What do you want?" he asked me and I couldn't look away from his eyes. "I-I-" I stuttered. "Answer me." He stood up and his height took my breath away. He towered over me, and my heart fluttered. "I want to be happy and independent. I don't want to depend on anyone ever again." He stared at me for the longest time, then sat down. "You may go." I paused, blinking a few times. "Really? just like that, don't you want to know my school and my..." He gave me a closed look. I couldn't read his eyes. "May I go?" Cocking his head to the side, he stared at me. "Do you want to?" The amount of butterflies that filled my stomach was illegal. "Yes, please." "You may go." He said again as if testing me and I quickly headed for the door, closing it behind me. I blew a hard breath from my chest. "What the heck was that?"
