Lance Corporal Jackman and Lieutenant Prenston and I arrived at the hospital around nine pm. It was dark so I doubted anyone would be here. Visiting hours were definitely over.
We all walked into the hospital three bulky guys in uniform sure turned heads and of course the guys had to wink at the nurses who gushed. I on the other hand rolled my eyes. I was used to the girls fawning over me in highschool and to be honest it was tiring. The only girl that hadn't was Courtney that's why I was intrigued by her she was a sparky and ambitious and a f*****g goddamn angel in disguise
She had the voice of an angel. She could go far in her life if she wanted to. I was so proud of the girl I had got to know in the last year of high school. But one thing I didn't understand is how she ended up here fighting for her life because some asshole did not like her.
"Hello officers, how can I help you?" The nurse asked, batting her eyelids.
I rolled my eyes.
"Well gorgeous, my friend here is here to see a patient."
"And who are you here to see sir?"
"Courtney Mendez."
She smiled and typed quicker than I ever could. "Argh yes, she's on the third floor. Would you like me to show you to her room?"
"No thank you mam, that won't be necessary."
"Sure sir. It's the fifth room on the right."
"Thank you mam."
She smiled and the guys winked, making her blush. I rolled my eyes again.
We walked away. "Don't you guys ever stop?"
They laughed. "Nagh."
"It's a hospital guys not a pick up ground."
"Sorry bro, we couldn't help ourselves, women always seem to have that effect."
"Don't I know it."
"So what is this Courtney bird like?"
"You'll see."
"You're awfully quiet about this bird Jo. What are you hiding?"
"Nothing and don't call her a bird she doesn't have wings."
Though I often wondered if she had.
"Don't get your undies in a twist Jo. "
"I'm sorry guys, but she wouldn't like you calling her a bird. She'd have plenty to say regarding animal names for a girl. She'll probably have your balls for breakfast."
They chuckled. "Sounds like my type of girl. I like the feisty ones."
"She's fifteen guys, you're old enough to be her older brother, that's gross."
They chuckled. Dropping the subject. Thank f**k.
We finally reached the third floor and followed the nurses directions to room five on the right.
We all stopped outside the room. "Go in, we'll wait here."
I nodded opening the door entering the room as I expected it was beat apart from a few get well cards and balloons. I smiled seeing a lot of people who cared about her and wished her a quick recovery.
I walked over to the bed and stood looking over at her. She'd changed since I'd last seen her, though it hadn't been a year yet it felt like a lifetime. She was perfect even though she was sleeping.
I placed my hand over hers gently. "I'm sorry for leaving you squirt. I had no choice. I wanted to say goodbye to you but my parents had other plans for me.
If I was still here none of this would've ever happened. I promise I'll do everything in my power to fix this without getting either of us into s**t. I've missed you, squirt. You've grown so much since I left. If I didn't have a mental picture of you I wouldn't have recognised you."
"She sure has. I'm surprised you're here Jossiah."
I turned to see Jett Wolfe. He was the last person I expected to see here. "Jett what a surprise. I didn't think anyone else would be here after visiting hours."
"I've been here every night since it happened."
Wow. I wasn't expecting that odd a bad boy like him he prayed on girls like a second nature.
"So what brings you here Jossiah? I know the commanding officer wouldn't just allow you to get up and leave."
"He wouldn't you see the two guys outside the room?"
He nodded.
"They came with me and made sure I would go back. I'm still skating on thin ice until I prove myself."
He nodded. "Just like Courtney. "
I raised my eyebrow. "What do you mean she looks like she always has, a little different maybe."
"She is different, Jossiah. She changed into a badass a few months back. I wasn't sure what she was trying to prove but Barraman disposed of her even more for it and began targeting her more and bit by bit he took her whole works from under her."
"What do you mean?"
"He took away her safety blanket. Her friends and the only one to believe her was me. I don't know how you found out she was her or who told you. But, her friends left her after it s**t that Barraman pulled s**t they all believed. One person I thought would never leave her or believe what Barraman said was Issac but he had and that's why she's here and if I hadn't have got to her when I did and if a girl from my year hadn't have called the ambulance she wouldn't be here now she'd be six feet under."
His voice cracked. He was angry and disappointed in himself for not getting to her before she tried to take her life and if I was in his shoes I would feel like that too. I squeezed his shoulder. "I appreciate you looking over her. Though a certain guy was supposed to be. Thank you."
"They all believed him Jossiah so whoever had promised you such a thing meant s**t to them when they sided with Barraman prick."
"And they'll regret ever breaking that promise, believe me. Smd as for Barraman he'll get what's coming to him trust me he won't know what's hit him."
"Don’t get in s**t for this Jossiah, we'll sort it. We have a plan."
I nodded. "Maybe so, but he has to know he can't do this s**t anymore."
"Oh he won't, believe me."
"I have to go now. Take care of Courtney for me."
"I will. I promise."
I looked at Courtney and bent over kissing her forehead. "Get better and i'll see you soon, squirt."
I let go of her hand me and Jet nodded at each other before I left closing the door behind me
"How did it go Jo?"
"She was sleeping."
They nodded.
"So who was the dude?"
"Jet Wolfe. He was who I once was."
They nodded understanding we were all in that boat once upon a time but these guys still liked to flirt with every bit of skirt that walked their way.
"So where next?".
"Find some where to crash the night and get answers in the morning."
"Your friends?"
"Them and Ashton Barraman."
"Let us deal with that little prick you sort your friends out."
"I can't let you guys get in s**t for me."
"We won't look at it as an I owe you."
"Sure."
We all headed out of the hospital and headed to the jeep to find a hotel for the night. Tomorrow was going to be a long f*****g day.
