James came back from Britain because his father asked him to return and take over his company. With James's help, Charlotte successfully renewed the contract.
Charlotte called Sally and told her that James was back. Soon, Sally came to meet them at the restaurant.
"Look at you! You hardly look like your old self! Nice!" Sally slapped him hard on the shoulder.
James didn't look at all like the chubby boy he once was. He had grown even much taller than Sally and had quite the figure. While his personality remained unchanged, still cheerful and fanny as before.
"Hey, Sally, tomboy! You're still as rude as ever."
"What did you say?"
"You heard me!"
"I'm gonna whoop your butt right now!"
"Tomboy! Tomboy! Sally is a tomboy!"
Charlotte pursed her lips and laughed, feeling like she had gone back to her childhood. The two used to fight a lot, and neither would admit they were losing.
"I'll beat you up, Jim!"
"You haven't changed a bit, Sally. You still like to punch others. I'm telling you. No man will like you if you keep this up."
"That's okay. I don't like you anyway."
"Well, knock it off! Why don't we sit down and talk? Sally, don't argue with him. We haven't seen each other in so long."
James grunted, "You hear that, Sally? Charlotte is the best."
"Ha, you're so childish! Charlotte's the best. So, of course, she's the best to me!"
"You're the childish one, tomboy. I bet you don't have a boyfriend, do you? You're so rude!"
Sally gritted her teeth and said, "Do you miss getting your butt whooped?"
Charlotte rolled her eyes, thinking that both of them were childish.
James suddenly shifted the topic and asked Charlotte, "Charlotte, do you have a boyfriend yet? Do you still like Gerald?"
Before he left the country, James knew that Charlotte was close to the Millers, and Bruce and Mia had wanted to adopt her. He also knew the Millers were wealthy and that they owned Miller Group.
"What? Oh, they've always been in contact. In case you didn't know, Charlotte and Gerald are married!" Sally blurted it out immediately.
"What? You're married?! Really? Impossible!" James looked at Charlotte, dumbfounded and surprised.
Charlotte put on a bitter grin and explained, "It's a little complicated."
"Well, tell me about it in detail. I got all the time in the world."
"No, I can't. I have to work this afternoon. Ah, it's almost time! Sally, stay with James, okay? I have to leave now."
"I'm not staying with him! Charlotte, if you're going, then I'll go too."
James was surprised that they left so quickly. As he hadn't heard the gossip about Charlotte and was curious about it, James offered to buy them dinner.
Charlotte looked at her watch and saw that it was only half an hour before she had to go to work. She hurriedly said goodbye to them and left quickly.
"Hey, Sally, is Charlotte really married?"
Sally rolled her eyes and replied, "Yeah, it's true."
"Really? To Gerald?"
"Correct."
"How can that be? I thought Gerald liked Charlotte's cousin Natalie!"
"Ah, it's a long story."
"Then tell me! It's killing me!"
Back at Miller Group, Thomas was shocked by Charlotte's success in signing the contract. He knew it was a rigged game for Charlotte to lose. She could find no way out on either side.
His director Dale even asked him to get ready to kick her out, but she somehow returned with the contract!
"No raise?"
"They gave in."
"How on earth?"
"Thomas, the contract is here. Am I bluffing or what?"
"No, I do not doubt you. It's just somewhat unbelievable!"
"Well, here's the contract. No more reason to fire me now, do you?"
"Fire you? Of course, I won't! That was a great job!"
If James hadn't done me a favor, I'd be packing my things and getting ready to leave this building! Charlotte thought to herself.
As soon as Charlotte returned, Gerald got the news that she had made it.
"Gerald, Charlotte got it at the old price."
"That's something," Gerald said with an indifferent tone.
"It is said that the son of the Wesley Group's boss has returned, and he seems to be Charlotte's friend."
So that's it! I knew Charlotte wouldn't be able to convince Wesley Group! Sure enough, someone helped her. Gerald thought.
Noel asked in a low voice, "So we can't fire her for now, right?"
"You're pleading for her?"
"I wouldn't dare to."
In Noel's eyes, Gerald was too harsh against Charlotte. Charlotte was his wife anyway. Yet Gerald never had his eyes on Charlotte, so all he ever wanted was Charlotte out of his sight.
"What? You guys seem close."
Noel froze and then explained, "No, it's just school's starting soon. You won't see her anymore in a few days. Besides, she is just an intern anyway. It would be a time waste for a boss like you to watch an intern all day."
Noel tried to convey that there was no need to make things difficult for Charlotte.
He was sure that Charlotte would leave here for school and stay out of Gerald's sight for good. Gerald could just bear with her for a week or so. Besides, she was in the sales department, and they wouldn't run into each other anyhow.
Gerald glanced at Noel, which brought Noel to a dead stop.
Noel felt his heart skip a beat and said immediately, "Sorry, that's too much!"
To his surprise, Gerald said, "Get her back and lead her in on the job yourself!"
"Huh?"
"Got a problem?"
"No! I'm on my way!"
Charlotte didn't have much stuff with her, only two notebooks. After packing everything, she went back to the chairman's office with Noel.
"Noel, he really said that?"
"Yeah, that's what he said."
She still felt weird about Gerald's decision to get her back. He told me to go to the sales department before. Why does he suddenly ask me to come back? I thought he never liked me and didn't want to see me yet. Charlotte thought to herself.
"Move her things next door," Gerald told Noel when Noel led Charlotte in.
Gerald still didn't want to be in the same office with Charlotte, even though he allowed her to return.
Charlotte looked at the grim expression on his face. She didn't know what he was thinking, which made her uneasy.
"Let me know if you need anything," Noel said to Charlotte.
Noel treated her nicely, and Charlotte guessed it might be because he knew she was Gerald's wife. Either way, she was grateful for him for helping her.
"Thank you for what you did, Noel!"
"Don't mention it."
Charlotte enjoyed a leisurely afternoon. Nobody threw unreasonable orders at her. Finally, she enjoyed a peaceful time.
However, in the next few days, Charlotte tasted how painful it was to work for Gerald. It was a living hell.
