It's been a few days since I last saw Darius. Part of me knows that I'll never see him again. However, a large part of me desperately wants to see him again. It's that part of me that keeps me sane each day. Hopeful of our future together.
A wise person once said, if we don't have hope, we have nothing at all. So until something changes, I will continue to hold onto any fragment of hope I can get.
Even though Darius and I had kept to our agreement and stayed away from each other, I wanted to take extra precautions, which is why I had my pack move. Alpha Xander knew where we had been staying, so it was time to find a new home. A home where we wouldn't have to look over our shoulders in constant fear. While I didn't want to worry my pack members, I couldn't bring myself to always be on guard, worried that Alpha Xander would fail to be true to his word and come after my pack regardless.
I barely slept anymore. I was always on guard. With my advanced hearing, I would know right away if someone came close to our pack. I stayed on guard every night. It had been nearly 72 hours since I last slept. Regardless of my determination to stay awake, I could feel my eyes begin to droop. I decided a quick nap couldn't hurt. I let my eyes fall for just a little bit.
I woke up suddenly with a start. I could hear screams in the distance. At first, I thought it was just a horrible nightmare. Until I realized that I wasn't asleep. I shot up from where I had laid down on the grass and looked to see where the screams were coming from, which is when I realized it too late.
"NO!" I screamed.
"NO! NO! NO! NO!" I shouted as I ran with every ounce of energy in me.
I knew what had happened before it happened. By the time I got there, it was exactly how I had pictured. Or should I say, how Alpha Xander had shown me?
I ran to each of the bloodied bodies, barely able to identify them due to the extent of their injuries. This wasn't a battle. This was an all-out m******e. My friends had all been slaughtered. But why?
I didn't understand what was going on. Why did this happen? I stayed true to Alpha Xander's promise. I didn't see Darius again. So why had he gone and killed everyone?
I fell to the ground, onto my knees. I was completely heartbroken by the sight in front of me. They were all dead. My parents included. He had slaughtered them all.
"WHY?!" I screamed out.
I need to know why this happened. I had already begun to blame myself for my part in all of this. But I needed to know why this even happened.
"WHY!" I screamed once more.
As if on cue, I could hear maniacal laughter come from behind me.
"Do you really not understand?" The man questioned me.
I turned around to come face to face with an unknown werewolf. He was covered in blood and dressed all in black. From the look of him, I would guess he's one of Alpha Xander flunkies.
"Who are you?" I ask.
"Who I am isn't important. Why I'm here is the better question." He says, mocking me.
As much as I hate him, I know he's right. I could care less who he is. I can make my own guesses at that. What I really wanted to know was why.
"Fine. Why are you here?" I shout out with venom.
"Fiesty, now are we?" He asks, taunting me.
Furious, I feel my anger begin to build up within me. I begin to channel my anger towards this man in front of me. Subconsciously, I raise my right hand into the air, shaping my hand like an open circle. I watch emotionlessly as the man in front of me is lifted into the air, clawing at his neck as if to pull an invisible hand away from his throat.
The sight made me smile.
"Get to the point." I say, losing my patience.
The man continues to struggle under my grasp. Then suddenly, I felt someone wrap their arms around me.
"Wynter! Let him go!" I hear a familiar voice shout at me.
Stunned, I spin in the direction of the voice to see the last person I would ever expect to be here right now.
"Let him go." Darius says, wrapping his arms around me, comforting me.
I can feel his love for me wash over me. My anger begins to subside as I let his emotions begin to control me.
I hear a thud as the man drops to the ground. I let myself crumble in Darius' embrace.
"He killed them all!" I shout out in between sobs.
"They're dead!" I shout as if my mind has only now caught up to the recent events.
Darius doesn't respond. Instead, he continues to hold me without taking his focus off of the man that I had nearly choked the life out of just a moment ago.
Darius manages to calm me down after a few minutes.
"Wait. Why are you here?" I ask, only now realizing that he's here right now.
"I heard you scream." He says. I knew something was wrong. So I came right away.
"What do you mean? How could you hear me? The packhouse is nearly an hour away." I state, needing to understand what's going on.
"I can't explain it. It was as if you were in my mind. I was asleep when I could hear this horrible scream in my mind. I knew right away that it had to be you. So without thinking, I came as fast as I could." He explains.
I didn't even realize I was capable of something like that.
I turned my attention back to the man that was kneeling on the ground, gasping for breath. He stood up as if he was trying to get away. However, he sealed his fate the moment he decided to taunt me.
I raise my hand, freezing him in place. The man looks stunned, which only makes me smile. 'I'm going to enjoy this.' I think to myself.
I walk closer to the man, Darius not pausing to leave my side for a moment. He stands beside me as I begin to interrogate the soldier.
"WHY?!" I shout at him. My patience is long gone.
"Because you challenged him. He wanted to show you what happens to those that defy him." The man states.
"WHY?!" I scream at him once more, my anger once again getting control over me.
"WHY did he do this when I had kept my side of the deal?" I shout at him.
"He was going to either way. I'm only surprised that he asked us not to kill you." The man states.
I slowly nod my head from his confession.
'This was his plan all along. He wanted to give me the illusion of choice when really he had decided for me. He wanted to make me think that I had control when I should've realized that he had never allowed me that from the beginning.'
The events of our first meeting flash through my mind—everything making more sense.
"He planned this from the beginning." I spit as the realization hits me.
"What?" Darius questions.
"That's the only reason why he backed off that day. Because he had already planned this out." I state, realizing where I had gone wrong.
My first mistake was ever believing that a rogue killer like that would ever leave us alone. He was a ruthless killer. He did this for sport. My friends were nothing but pawns in his horrible game. I turn my gaze on Darius.
"Did you know about this?" I question.
Darius' eyes grow wide at my accusation.
Out of the corner of my mind, I see Alpha Xander's henchman begin to stumble away. Without second-guessing, I raise my hand, freezing him to the spot. I then form my hand like an open circle the quickly close it into a fist.
Just like that, the man falls to the ground with a thud. Dead.
I turn my attention back to Darius. It's as though I can no longer see sense. As if I've become possessed.
Darius' eyes grow wide after seeing the man fall dead to the ground. However, I take no notice of it. My emotions are heightened far past anything I've ever experienced before.
"Little One." Darius begins to coo in my ear. However, the sane part of me is long gone.
I feel my hand raise up. I watch emotionlessly as Darius is pushed away from me by an invisible force. I feel my hand form the open circle like it had done earlier. Darius' feet begin to dangle off the ground. Much like the soldier had done, Darius begins to claw at his neck.
"This... isn't... you..." Darius says, in-between gasps for air.
"Regardless... of.. what.. happens.. know.." Darius begins to say while coughing.
"That... I..." He tries once more.
I watch as his face begins to turn blue. His eyes begin to close as his air continues to be sucked out of his body.
"Always... loved... you.." Darius says.
My head tilts to the side as I repeat his words back to me.
'What?' I ask in my mind, not realizing that I said it in his.
"I love you." He says.
As if being struck by lightning, I begin to focus on what I'm doing. I force my hand back down to my side as Darius falls to the ground with it. I see his body lifeless and unmoving on the ground. Then suddenly, everything goes black.
