Chapter 10.2: Northern wolf

880 Words
"A what?" Skye asked the sheriff, her eyes were still fixed on the picture that she was holding. "A northern wolf." Fisher replied much clearer. "Well, specifically, it's called a gray wolf or a timber wolf. One of the species of wolves." He added. When Skye didn't say anything to him, he asked her again. "So Skye, let me ask you again. Is that the one you saw?" Skye remains silent. She's not entirely sure if it's the same one but then again they had similarities. "Skye?" Maddie called her when she still didn't talked back. "I don't know. Maybe. " She replied faintly, still holding the picture in her hands. "And maybe not." she added when she thought something . "Wolves have packs right? Maybe this is not the one I saw but rather one of their packs." Skye added. "It's a lone wolf Skye. It doesn't have packs." Fisher replied. "How can you be sure?" "Cause you're not the only one who saw it." Sheriff Fisher drag the other picture towards her. Skye put the picture she was currently holding down on the table and took the second one. The picture had the same wolf on it but the difference is, there was a man who was crouching near it's head. He was wearing a hat and then a red and black checkered long sleeve. He was looking at the camera with a smug grin and a rifle in hand. The wolf looks bigger with him on the picture "That man on the picture is Thomas Reed. A resident of Southern Vale. He is great in hunting, that's his hobby actually." Fisher started and then he continued when Skye was listening intently. "Thomas and his son Cody went hunting on the high area of the mountains last year. He saw the wolf on that day . He couldn't believe it with his own eyes at first but then his son saw it too. But unlike you, they didn't encountered it closely. They were in camouflage waiting for a deer when it just appeared. We didn't believed them when they reported it to us. But his Son took this." Fisher took the third and last picture from the table and handed it on Skye. She took it form him and she got goosebumps when she saw it. The wolf was alive on this picture. It was standing by the rock looking at their direction. It looks like he was looking at you. "Thomas recruited other hunters to find the wolf on that same place but it didn't came back." Sheriff Fisher said. He just sighed and fixed the sleeve of his uniform before he talks again. "And just this week, Thomas' son Cody saw it again when he hunts alone. He watched it's every move for about an hour. Waiting for a chance to shot it without noticing him but it ran away when it found it's prey. They were eager to hunt down that wolf so when we heard about your encountered with it, we immediately called Thomas and other hunters to deal with it. They tried to tranquilize it but it gone fera so we guess they didn't have a choice but to shoot it." "If you're sure that this one and the one I saw was the same, why'd you still asked me then?" Skye asked curiously at him. Sheriff took a glance at Officer Mitchell before he replied. And Skye saw him took a quick glance to Levi and Maddie too. "We're just making sure that you wouldn't tell anyone you had seen it. We don't want the people of Southern Vale to know about it. " "But why? Why wouldn't you let the people know about it? They should be aware. It's dangerous." "We don't want to set panic to them, Skye. And there's nothing to be worried about anymore. We already handled it. The wolf is already dead. And beside, it's just a normal wolf. " "Normal? Is that seem normal to you?" Skye said, unintentionally raising her voice. "Timber wolves are the largest wild members of the dog family." Officer Mitchell was the one who answered her. "And they mainly found in North America. They tend to live on the high mountaintops or in a remote wilderness and-." "Are you sure it is what you think it is Sheriff ?" Skye wasn't even listening to Officer Mitchell and just asked Sheriff Fisher. "Cause it's way bigger than a man. And to be honest, I never saw a wolf that as big as this on any news and even the internet." Skye asked them. "It's an adult male." Officer Mitchell continued , not minding if Skye would listen to him or not. "Male ones are bigger than females. They can grow from 3-6 feet in height and 160 cm long. And they weigh about 170 lbs. Most of them had gray furs. But there were also black and a light brown or russet brown. " He explained it further. To Skye, he sounds like a student teaching some science discovery. "But- " "Skye." Skye stopped what she wanted to say when Maddie called her. Her voice sound firm and she look at her intently. "He's right. I know about it too." she added.
