"Hello?"
My breath hitches at his deep husky voice. It sounds like I just woke him up.
"Mr. Fitzgerald?" I ask for confirmation.
I hear his soft chuckle and I can't help but smile.
"Kylie, don't sound so surprised. You're the one who called me." He says and I can only imagine the grin on his gorgeous face.
" I'll be there in five minutes." Before I can even tell him where I am, he hangs up.
"Don't worry. He knows." The voice in my mind informs me.
I stare at the clock on the wall impatiently, and soon I hear the familiar voice.
I'm not sure what came over me, but I find myself rushing over to engulf him in a huge hug. He hesitates for a split second before wrapping his arms around me. For the first time in a while, I feel safe. Realizing my feelings, I quickly release myself from the hug.
"Sorry," I mumble embarrassingly.
"There's nothing to apologize for. Come on, let me drive you home."
I nod my head and walk out of the police station with him. I try not to gawk at the sports car as he opens the passenger door. How the hell can he afford something this nice on a teacher's salary?
I take my seat and he closes the door for me before heading to the driver's seat.
We sit in a comfortable silence before I tell him what happened tonight as he drives to my house. How does he know where I live? A question I rather not ask considering he probably won't answer until my birthday, like everything else.
Yellow tape, a bunch of police officers, forensics most likely, and nosey neighbors surround my house.
"Perhaps, I could take you somewhere else?" Mr. Fitzgerald asks with concern.
Letting out a deep sigh, I slump further into my seat.
"Stay with me tonight." He answers without missing a beat. Before I respond, he quickly adds, "I'll sleep on the couch, of course. I just need to make sure you're somewhere safe. Please."
His hand softly covers the top of mine and I can't help but gaze into his eyes. My hands tingle from where his skin connects with mine.
"I would appreciate that, but I don't want to get you into trouble. If anyone knew I spent the night at your place, you could lose your job regardless of us not doing anything inappropriate."
"I don't give a s**t if I lose my job if it means keeping you off the streets or with your mother tonight."
My heart soars at his words and my head begins to spin. This man is willing to risk his career for me. I should take advantage of this opportunity to finally get some answers.
"Okay, I'll stay with you. On one condition though," I state firmly.
"Whatever it is, consider it done." Mr. Fitzgerald replies before hearing what my condition even is.
"Really? What if my condition is for you to run around town naked while screaming like a maniac?"
With the car still in park, I watch as he takes his shirt off. Thanks to the streetlights nearby, I can see his perfectly sculpted body and I resist myself from touching him.
I'm brought out of my gaze as I hear a zipper sound. "WAIT! I was only joking That's not the condition I meant." I state and then begin to laugh. I can't believe he was willing to run around naked just because I said so.
"Oh?" He questions me with a smirk. "Then what do you request?"
"I-I want answers. So, as long as you promise to give them to me, I will spend the night at your place."
He hesitates for a split second before agreeing.
Putting his shirt back on, he puts the car back into gear and we drive to his place.
Riding in the elevator of an apartment building, my jaw drops when we reach the top floor. Literally, the top floor. He has it all to himself. He had to use a special keycard to even get to this level.
"Okay, first question. Who are you?" Seriously, he must be some sort of mob boss on the side to be this rich.
"Liam Fitzgerald." He replies.
"Cute name, but that's not what I meant." I cross my arms and stare at my teacher.
"How about you take a seat first, and I'll make some coffee for us before getting to... everything."
"Fine," I reply as I slump into his comfortable sofa.
"I can't wait to see his bedroom!" The voice in my head blurts out, causing me to exclaim out loud. "What!?"
"Kylie? You okay?" Mr. Fitzgerald asks from the kitchen.
"Yes. Just...talking to myself."
When he finally joins me in the living room, he hands me a mug and I greedily sip the smoothing coffee. I needed this after the night from hell.
"So, were you really talking to yourself...or to your wolf? You know, the voice inside of your head?"
I spit the coffee out all over him and quickly apologize.
"I'm sorry, what did you just say?"
Not caring about the coffee stain on his shirt, he gently takes my hand in his.
"I was waiting to tell you until you're birthday because I didn't think you would believe me before then. That voice you hear is your wolf. You can hear her, but won't be able to transform until you are eighteen. Other than turning into your wolf form, you will also be able to recognize your mate when you are of age."
"It's true, Kylie." The voice in my head confirms what Mr. Fitzgerald is telling me.
"So, I'm not crazy?" I ask in disbelief and relief."
"Wait, you believe me?" He replies to my question with his own.
Shrugging my shoulders, I nod my head. "I mean, it makes sense. There's no possible way that you could have known about the voice in my head if you weren't telling the truth. I don't know how to describe it, but it's like a gut feeling that tells me you are an honest man."
"You are taking this news much better than I expected." He says as he studies my face for any hint of...fear maybe? Or disbelief? I know how crazy this all sounds, but something in the back of my mind tells me that I already knew this. But if I did, how could I have forgotten?
"I'm guessing you're a wolf too then? Since you know all about them and such. And you still haven't answered my original question."
Letting out a chuckle, he nods his head. "Yes, I'm a werewolf as well. In fact, your two friends are as well. We belong to the same pack, but choose to live our lives in human town. We return to the packhouse every Saturday though for weekly meetings."
"Wow." The only word I manage to say as I register everything I am learning. I knew something was suspicious with Cameron and Brandon.
"So, how does being a werewolf teacher make you rich?" Again, he lets out a chuckle and I find myself clenching my legs together. How does something as simple as a laugh sound so sexy coming from him?
His face hardens and he abruptly stands up and walks away from the sofa.
What the hell? Did I ask something too personal? He's a wolf mob boss. That must be it. He doesn't want to tell me though in order to keep me safe from enemies or some s**t like that.
"Mr. Fitzgerald? Did I ask too much?"
"Please, call me Liam when we are not on school grounds. And no, you did nothing wrong. It's just... nevermind."
"There's a lot for you to learn about wolves, Kylie. Different ranks, rules, mates."
"Oh! You mentioned I will find out on my birthday who my mate is. Does that mean I have to be with that person forever? What if I don't even like the guy?"
His facial expression changes into an upset-looking one. How do I keep on asking the wrong things? This question doesn't even regard him! It's about me and my future.
When he doesn't answer me, I grab his hand, catching him off guard.
"Liam. Please, tell me what happens. I can accept being a wolf, but I can't accept being with someone for the rest of my life that I don't love."
"You said my name." He smiles at me.
"You told me to," I reply with a smirk.
With a deep sigh, he becomes serious again. "If you don't want to be with the person that the Moon Goddess chose for you, then there is the option of rejecting them."
