Questions

"Ma'am, we need you to come with us down to the station for questioning." I have never been more embarrassed in my life as the cop escorts me to the police car outside. I have no doubt they will be asking my Mom to come down as well for her statement to have on file. I remain silent during the ride to the police station and wonder how my life came to this. I've always been well-behaved and maintained excellent grades, and now I will have an arrest record. I'll never be able to teach in a school now. Goodbye college, goodbye career dreams. I expected to be stripped down and manhandled, but that is not the case. Not even an orange jumpsuit for me. I'm led into an interrogation room and asked to take a seat. The cop leaves the room as a man who I assume is a detective takes a seat across from me. "Evening, or should I say morning? I'm Detective Wallace. For the record, can you state your full name for me please?" "Kylie Covington." I reply, wanting to get this over with as soon as possible. It's not like I have anything to hide. "Thank you. Now, can you tell me everything you can about what occurred tonight? Any little detail is important." I tell him everything that I told my Mom. About how my friends came over and Richard immediately kicked them out when he got home from the hospital. That he fired Henry and told Claudette to go home before coming up to my bedroom. "So, what happened when Richard entered your room?" Oh, f**k. How am I supposed to respond when I don't even know? "Tell him that Richard molested you." "WHAT!" I scream out loud from what the voice suggested me to say. "Is there a problem, Miss Covington?" "I promise to explain everything, but you have to listen to me. Say exactly what I tell you." Seeing no other option than getting locked up, I listen to the voice. "H-he molested me." The look on Detective Wallace's face looks pissed, yet empathetic. He writes something down in his notebook before looking at me again. "I'm sorry, Kylie. That must have caused you pain and frustration. Am I right?" "Tell him that you felt disgusted, ashamed, helpless." I mean, if that did occur, that is exactly how I would feel. So, I say those words to the detective. "Understandable. So, what happened afterward?" "You took a shower and then cried yourself to sleep knowing that your Mom wouldn't believe you if you told her the truth." I repeat what the voice says and I actually do feel my eyes begin to burn with unshed tears. Handing me a tissue, the detective then asks his next question. "Can you explain why some of the surveillance camera footage was erased?" "I DON'T KNOW! I was sleeping until I heard my Mom scream. I thought Richard was hurting her, so I ran as fast as I could down the stairs to see what was going on." I answer truthfully. "Please, calm down. I'm only trying to figure out what happened at your house tonight. Can you think of anyone who would want to harm Richard?" "Not specifically, but I wouldn't doubt that he's f****d over many people to become the billionaire that he is. Was." "Okay. We can't keep you here without evidence, but I suggest you stay in town." I let out a humorless laugh. "As if I could possibly go anywhere else yet." "Thank you for your cooperation, Kylie. Is there someone you would like to call to come pick you up? Your mother is still in the other room if you want to wait for her." "I would like to make a call, please." No way in hell do I want to be anywhere near my mother right now. As he leads me to a phone booth, he gives me space to make my call. As I pick up the phone, I realize I don't know Cameron or Brandon's number off hand. "Dial this number. Trust me." As I have been doing all night, I listen to the voice and press the numbers she says. A familiar voice answers after the second ring. "Hello?"
