Funeral

His eyes holding mine, he nods. "You're right, Kylie. I'm sorry. I need to be professional when at work, but it's so difficult when I have you alone in a room." "Well..." I say as I trace a finger from his lip down his chest. "My birthday will be here before we know it, and then I can spend as much time as I want with you...alone." Never in my life have I said something like that to a man, but he makes me feel things I never have before. I'm changing, and for the better. The phone in his room rings and after he talks to whoever it is, he looks at me with remorse."We will continue this discussion later." He whispers in my ear before unlocking the door. "Oh, there you are!" Mrs. Thomas exclaims as she approaches me in the hallway near Liam's classroom. "I have nothing else to say to you," I express before she can give me a half-ass apology. "I understand your anger towards me, and I am sorry. Your mother is here and waiting for you in my office." Okay, I totally did not see that coming. Why the hell is that woman here? With my interest piqued, I follow Mrs. Thomas to her office. "Please, take a seat," Mrs. Thomas politely says to me as we enter her office. I stare at my mom dumbfounded as to why she is here. Her eyes are red and tears streak her face. "What's going on?" I ask out loud, wanting to get straight to the point. My patience has been running very thin with these two women. "Your mother got the autopsy report back today and has something to say to you." Mrs. Thomas nods at my mother as a cue to speak. "Kylie.. I.. I.. She then begins crying hysterically. I want to comfort her, but I don't want to feel rejected again like this morning when I tried to help her. "It's okay, take your time," Mrs. Thomas says as she hands my mom a box of tissues. I wish I had the excuse of having to get to class or something, but it's the end of the school day and I have no excuse to get out of here. I flinch in surprise when my mom places her hand on top of mine. "Kylie, I am so sorry for blaming you. I should have known you had nothing to do with this, but with how much you hated Richard, it was easy to believe you would kill him." Was this her way of apologizing? I guess it's a start. "What was the cause of death?" My mom lets out a humorless laugh. "He was attacked by a wolf... again. I just don't understand how it got into our house. Do you happen to know?" And just like that, I feel like she is blaming me again. "I was asleep, mom. I have no idea how and why a wolf was in the house. Being the second time a wolf harmed him, he must have been provoking it somehow. Don't you agree?" With tension building up, Mrs. Thomas decides to intervene. "Ladies, let's take a moment to breathe and think about the bigger question. What happens now? With Richard's cause of death clearing Kylie's name, how can we fix your relationship?" "I don't think we can." I turn to my mom in shock. She's not even going to attempt to be a mother and fix our broken relationship. "Why do you say that?" Apparently, I'm not the only one shocked by my mom's response. "After Richard's funeral tonight, I never want to see you again." Without another word, she stands up abruptly and storms out of the office. "Kylie.." I put a hand up to stop her from talking. "Don't worry about me. I have a place to go. Mom is upset and understandably so." As I leave Mrs. Thomas's office, I find Liam standing nearby in the hallway. I have no doubt that he was listening to that entire conversation. "Can I give you a ride home?" I simply nod my head and walk out into the school parking lot with him. Sitting in a comfortable silence, Liam drives me to my house. Much to my relief, mom isn't home. I invite Liam in to help me pack as quickly as possible. "Is it safe to assume you will be staying with me?" I look over at a very concerned Liam and smile at him. "Sorry, I guess I should have asked you first. I just assumed you wouldn't mind." Stopping with packing, he walks over and embraces me in a tight hug before giving me a soft kiss. "I can't wait to wake up to your beautiful face every morning and be the last person I see before falling asleep." My heart flutters and I can't help smiling. By the time we finish loading his car and the truck he rented, I am exhausted. "I will have someone bring everything up. We need to get ready for the funeral." I almost forgot about that. It's been less than 24 hours and my mom already arranged a funeral for Richard. Just like she did with my dad. That woman wastes no time and is probably online looking for her next future husband. At the memorial service, Liam and and go our separate ways in order to make our relationship discreet. Cameron and Brandon show up and take a seat beside me while Lucy sits with Liam. "You guys didn't have to come." "Of course we did!" Cameron exclaims. Brandon then adds, "We couldn't leave our friend to deal with this on her own. You will always have us to lean on for comfort and support." Cameron then leans in and whispers in my ear, "Obviously you will always have Liam, but we know you can't be seen publicly with him for a while." I smile at my two best friends. "Thank you, guys. It's refreshing to have true friends. I'm not used to this." When I say the entire town showed up, I mean it literally. I don't think half of these people even spoke a word to Richard, but they wanted to be present as part of the community. That is one thing I do love about this small town. After the memorial service, we all meet at the graveyard where Richard's body is placed to rest. My blood boils when I see he is being placed next to my father.
