KARA
“Luna Kara, the sun is already up. Please wake up.” I was startled by the sudden shake on my shoulder.
My mind buffered for a second before realizing where I was. Right, I’m in Alpha Dominic’s room.
I looked at one of the staff in the pack house. She’s been assisting me ever since we prepared for the wedding, but I haven’t caught her name. Just like any other people here, they barely show any emotion, let alone smile. I’ve seen annoyed and disgusted looks darted at me, though.
I pushed my body out of the bed and quickly flinched. My whole body felt sore, and my head ached, but I didn’t have any right to complain.
“Sorry, I overslept.” I promptly apologized.
She lowered her head. “You don’t have to apologize, Luna. We prepared breakfast for you.”
My whole body cringed at the sudden formality. If I hadn’t had this luck, if I could call it one, I’d probably be one of the servants here. My mind still couldn’t cope with the fact that they had to bow to me.
“Please, you don’t have to be formal with me. Especially if we’re alone. Uhm, I was pretty distracted the last few days. I didn’t catch your name. May I know what to call you?” Socializing was never my strong suit, but I’ll be dealing with a lot of people now. I have to learn to speak up somehow.
“My name is Lucy, Luna. From now on, I’ll be your personal attendant, along with three others. If you have any concerns, feel free to tell us, and we’ll relay it for you.” Lucy answered, still wearing a straight face.
My current standing might be a lot of a she-wolf’s dream, but I’ve never felt this lost, never this small. With every move I make, they watch and judge.
It’s suffocating and terrifying.
“The Alpha, where is he?” I asked after I finished my morning routine and as we headed towards the dining place.
Lucy checked her tablet, “He is currently out of the territory as he had to meet with another allied Alpha. From what I know, he would be back before the full moon.”
I didn’t even know when he left, but it’s not like it matters, not like I could help nor be allowed to do so with whatever the matter was. The long table was served with food enough for two people, surprising me.
“Is there anyone else eating with me?” I couldn’t help but ask. This is too much food if it’s only meant for me!
Lucy gave a slight nod. “Beta Ruis wanted to have an audience with you. He’s already on his way.”
My mood immediately dampened after hearing her response. I wanted to turn him down, but I also wanted to check on Lianne. Right now, he was my only connection with my sister and probably my sanity.
He arrived and quickly tried dismissing Lucy and the rest of the people around.
“What are you waiting for? I need to talk to the Luna privately. Leave.”
Lucy stood in front of him and lowered her head. “I apologize, beta, but I’m working under direct orders of the Luna and the Alpha.”
I fought the urge to scoff. He definitely needs to be humbled once in a while. Ruis was obviously not pleased with her response, but I stepped in before he could do anything. Knowing this bastard, he would undoubtedly hurt someone just because he felt disrespected, even though these people are simply doing as they were told.
“It’s okay, Lucy. Do as he told.” I uttered.
They all left without question, and that was the only time Ruis smiled.
“That’s more like it.” He grinned and turned to me. “How was the new Luna?”
I couldn’t hide my repugnance seeing the smug look on his face. He thinks he’s winning because I was doing what he wanted, but I wouldn’t even blink in dismissing him once I get Lianne away from him.
“I doubt that you’re here just to check on me.” I sat myself and avoided his gaze. Not that I was afraid, but I’d do anything just so I wouldn’t have to look at his face. I loathe him more than anyone in the world, and yet, I couldn’t get away from him.
He did the same while staring at me, still grinning from ear to ear. I could feel it. “You’re being too hostile, Luna. I’m a beta of this pack, in case you forgot. It was part of my duty to check up on your welfare, aside from you being my lovely daughter, of course.”
My hands formed into fists underneath the table, but I quickly composed myself. He takes pleasure in breaking me, and I wouldn’t fall for it again. I picked up the fork, with hands still trembling in anger, and started eating, barely chewing what I was eating and focusing on not losing my patience.
“Thanks to you, our family is living well, so I came here to thank you. Your sister is doing great, by the way. I bought her a lot of stuff, and she barely mentions you now.” He casually continued his meal after his remark.
I felt a tinge in my chest even though I knew that he was bluffing. I know my sister more than Ruis could ever do. She is happy with what she has and appreciates what was given to her, but she won’t forget about me.
He rested his chin on his knuckles, “You don’t believe me, aren’t you? It doesn’t matter. I’m sure you wouldn’t leave this place anyway. You’re not bold enough to defy the Alpha’s orders.”
“My sister…” I uttered after letting him yammer. “You better be telling the truth. Give her everything she needs and provide for her. That’s the least that you could do after ruining our lives.”
Ruis let out a fake gasp, “Ruining your life? Weren’t you the new Luna of one of the strongest packs in this country? I wouldn’t call that a ruined life. Haven’t you seen the people here? They follow your orders above mine. How was it? Being in charge of the house while the Alpha is away? You must be enjoying the authority after being pushed around your whole life.”
I grinned, “And what if I do? Are you now regretting the position you pushed me into?”
He looked at me with a pissed-off expression but broke into fits of laughter after a few seconds. His annoying voice echoed in the dining room.
“You’re so easy to fool, Kara, just like your mother. You know what you are here. Everyone knows that.”
My ears rang after he mentioned my mom. I stood from my seat, “You have no right to speak of my mom!”
I could accept all the insults flitted at me, but not to my mother.
“She was my dear wife. I have all the right to talk about her. She’s very innocent. That’s why I took a liking to her, but the game became boring when she was already so into me.”
A game. He thinks my mother’s feelings are a huge game.
“You monster. If you’re done with my mother, you could have divorced her instead. We could have gone separate ways, and we’d be out of your hair. Why did you kill her?” My eyes blurred out in tears.
Ruis raised his hands, “You’re confusing something, Luna. I never said I killed my wife. She got sick, remember?”
“You killed her, you liar!” I couldn’t take it anymore and exclaimed.
Lucy suddenly appeared behind me and held my arm before I could charge at Ruis. “I apologize for intruding, but it was time for your lessons, Luna Kara. If you are done with your breakfast, we should already hurry. We’re running late.”
For the first time, I’ve seen emotions in her eyes. It was a warning for me not to continue with my recklessness.
I backed away halfheartedly. Deep inside, I know that my words meant nothing without evidence, and an omega wouldn’t be able to beat a beta in a fight.
Ruis’ smile didn’t falter. He lowered his head, mocking me even though it was supposedly a sign of respect. “I wouldn’t waste any more of your precious time, Luna. Thank you for the interesting breakfast. I hope we can do it again.”
I broke into tears after he left. My whole body was trembling in pure anger. I want to erase the smile on his lips and avenge my mother. Even in this position, I’m still useless.
I’m starting to hate myself more than I hate Ruis.
“Get up, Luna.” Lucy pulled me up and dried my tears with a handkerchief. “This pack’s inner circle isn’t a child’s play, and you know it. If simple taunting could wreck you like that, you wouldn’t survive here.”
“You have no idea what I’ve been through,” I exclaimed in anguish.
She calmly nodded, “You’re right, but I’ve served the Alpha’s family my entire life. You have to learn to endure and know when to back down, then strike when you have the perfect opportunity. Remember my Luna, a queen doesn’t cry. She fights.”
