One overcast, dreary day, a day that personified how James was feeling, Sir informed him that a suitable woman had been found and that evening they’d be coupled. The news filled James with a renewed vigour to escape. He crawled over as much of the area as his bonds would allow. He collected bits of rock and anything else he thought might be up to the job of severing the ropes. A piece of glass was a godsend. It was only small and the edges were dull, but he kept smashing it between two rocks and eventually it broke in half. A smile bloomed on his face and he brought the glass to his lips and kissed it. It was hard going. With his wrists tied together there wasn’t much room for manoeuvring. The piece of glass kept slipping from between his fingers and he cut himself at least half a dozen
