The night after her world flipped upside down, Raven was not her happy self anymore. The girl who jumped around the neighborhood and greeted everyone in the morning was lost somewhere.
Her dark brown eyes were tinged with redness. Her long eyelashes were wet with tears all day. Her obsession over having pretty hair all day didn't matter anymore. They were tied up because no one would brush the long hair for her anymore.
After the death of her grandmother, Raven was inevitably in shock for a few days. The way that old woman had become Raven's only meaning of family was truly touching.
Raven always knew that she was not her grandmother's own family. She never hid anything from Raven. Not even the fact that her own mother had left her at the old woman's door and never showed up again.
The truth bothered Raven for a long time before it became one of the topics she started joking about. Although it seemed sad to some people, Raven couldn't do anything about it. Rather than being depressed over her identity as an abandoned child, she focused on being the cherished granddaughter of Cecelia Bradley.
Grandmother Cecilia's funeral took place in a fast pace. She didn't have any other relatives, in a sense grandmother Cecilia was as lonely as Raven and the two found a home with each other.
Friends and neighbours came to visit Raven but she didn't want to entertain anyone for too long. She grieved alone in silence through the day and cried when the night fell. She hid under the veil of darkness where no one could see her tears fall.
Raven was taught by her grandmother not to dwell over things for too long. If something went wrong then try to fix it, if you can't fix it then let it be. Grandmother's death was irreversible so Raven had to accept it sooner or later.
As another week approached, Raven slowly started to go back to her usual routine. It was hard, it was truly very hard to move on. Her day was surrounded by her grandmother's voice, not the silence was rotting her mentality.
A whole month passed in agonizing grief and nights of crying. Once Raven got a hold over herself, she went into the attic.
She had not forgotten her grandmother's words. She wanted Raven to look for the old box in the attic. For so long Raven had not even though about it because of her broken heart. She couldn't care less about anything else.
Only after her heart stabilized did she went up there and brought out the box. She sat cross legged on the rug in her room and placed rhe box in front of her.
"This doesn't look too good." Raven mumbled to herself as she wiped away the layers of dust from the box. It was a normal wooden box with some carvings and a unlocked hinge. It didn't even have a lock.
Raven licked her dry lips and opened the box in one breath. The revelation was pretty anticlimactic for Raven.
Inside the box was an old bound book. The hard cover was damaged but the name on it was still readable. It belonged to Fiona, Raven's mother.
Raven placed the book book aside and looked into the box again. The box itself wasn't huge so the things inside weren't many. Aside from the book, there was a pendant.
The gold pendant was round in shape and was hanging on a long chain. Raven pried it open to find two pictures. The woman's smiling face on one side was suspiciously close to what grandmother Cecilia had described Raven's mother as. While on the opposite side was a man who was a male version of Raven.
"Mom? Dad?" Raven whispered as she saw the two images. This was the first time she was seeing what her parents looked like. Emotions were surging inside her body like waves of an upcoming tsunami.
Raven took a deep breath and blinked a few times. Then she wore the pendant around her neck.
A few dried flowers were scattered at the bottom of the box and the last item inside was an old letter. The edges were yellowed and torn. The content of the letter was readable. Raven picked up the letter and started reading.
"Dear Raven,
Today I am making the hardest decision. I did not have the chance to see you walk, but I have to leave you. I am leaving you this letter because as much as I hate myself for doing this, I don't want you to despise me and your father.
You must lead a normal life with aunt Cecilia. She is a good person and also alone in this world. But I know she cannot accompany you forever. I want you to be safe all the time but your destiny is not in the human world my child.
When you will find this letter, it will be time for you to go on a different path. I don't have much time left, so I cannot explain everything to you. My diary, a witness of my life, is in this box.
You will find everything in there. From the day I met your father to the day I had to leave you. My happiness and regrets are in there.
I want you to learn and become so powerful that when they come for you, you will be able to defend yourself. Find your place in this world and don't end up like your father and I did. The circle has to end somewhere.
Being Powerful shouldn't be punishable. Power was never a curse to your father, but they made him a monster. He was a man who wanted to be happy but they didn't let him. You must find him darling. He was wronged as much as you were. We were all victims.
Your first step has to be now Raven. The Avencia Academy is where is all started, you have to end it there.
I am not by your side now, I can never be because they took the right from me. But remember that I have always loved you."
Raven read the letter once and again. She read it until her wet eyes were red. Her pink lips were parted. Her mother had to leave? Her father was punished? What is this about another world?
Nothing made sense to Raven. She leaned against the side of her bed and looked up blankly. What was she supposed to do?
According to the letter, Raven was in danger.
So much happened in a span of one month, was Raven even ready for a new adventure?
Raven straighten up. Whether she was ready or not was not relevant. Her mother must have been desperate if she had to make such a hard decision to leave her.
The cold spark in Raven flared a little. She wanted to know who broke her family.
Find your father.
That meant her father was still alive? Hope bloomed in Raven's heart. If it was true, then Raven had to find him. She couldn't let him suffer any longer.
After adjusting her mood, she folded the letter very small and hid it into the pendant she was wearing along with a few dried petals from the box. Then Raven picked up the diary that belonged to her mother and started readying about her life.
