Sergeant Riley knocked on the green door and poked his head into the office. “The village girl has been found. She returned to the village last night.”
Inspector Gall looked up from his desk. “Unharmed?”
“Better than that, sir. She is positively radiant. If you ask me, sir, her story is all airy-fairy. Made the whole thing up to explain her absence.”
“Then where was she, and what was she doing for two days and nights?”
“Off with her lover, I expect. I know that expression she was wearing—s****l fulfillment, I expect.”
“You should know, Riley. The village girls really swoon over your uniform. Fathered a child yet?”
“No, sir. I’m saving all that for marriage.” He grinned and shut the door.
