DYLAN'S POV
I promise Cai that I won't take her easy, so I ran without holding back when she suggested that we race back to the lake. She's doing quite well, and I got impressed when she used her wolf senses to find me. I can say that it will not take that much time for her to become a strong werewolf. She's smart and has good instincts, the perfect quality of a Luna.
I stopped at our starting point and shifted to my human form. But, of course, there's a massive gap between us. It took a few moments before Cai appeared in my line of sight, and when she emerged from the woods, she shifted back to her human form. I smiled at her.
She keeps on surprising me with what she's capable of. I didn't see any difficulties in her face when she returned to her human form, and she looks absolutely fine, except that her whole body is flushed.
She's smiling back at me as she walks in my direction, and I live to see that lovely smile. I did not move from where I am standing, enjoying every move she makes. Her hips are gracefully moving from side to side at every step she takes, and her long shiny brunette mane blew like a flag raised in the sky. I can stare at her forever, without moving a single muscle, and without even blinking-- that's how much I admire her. And I am not ashamed to admit that I am truly, madly, and deeply in love with this perfect woman in front of me. And with just a bunch of steps, she will be in my arms again.
My admiration got replaced with worry when she suddenly refrained from walking, and I felt my stomach drop when I saw Cai collapsed on the ground. I rushed to her side to check on her. Her eyes were still open, but they were heavy.
"Cai, talk to me. What's wrong?" I asked worriedly, and without saying a single word, her eyes closed, and her body went limp. Then I noticed that her whole body is as red as a beet. I placed the back of my hand against her forehead, and it almost burned my hand. She's burning up with fever! s**t! Did I push her too much? Or is it the juice?! f**k!
"Will, go to my room now! Cai is sick!" I ordered Will in the mind link. I'm glad that I can still think straight, even though I'm scared as hell right now! Only Cai can make me nervous and panic like this.
After putting our clothes on, I scooped her up and sprinted to the pack house, and Will was already at the door of my room waiting for us.
"What happened, Alpha?" Will asked with a concerned look.
"I don't know. She just collapsed out of the blue, and when I touched her, she's already burning up." I explained as I lay Cai on the bed. She's still unconscious, and her lips have gone dry.
"You think it's over fatigue, or maybe the energy booster you made had a side effect on her?" I inquired with regret, hanging at the back of my mind. I should have been more careful in giving her something. Will made that energy booster based on a werewolf endurance. Cai is a werewolf, that's a fact, but she just discovered her true self. A late bloomer. I should have considered that she'd been living most of her life as a human. How can I be so careless?! And now, she's suffering because of me! Again, because of me! How many times does she need to suffer and get hurt because of my recklessness? How can I become a good husband if I continue to make this kind of mistake?!
"That juice doesn't have a side effect. I tested it so many times before I started giving it to all of you." He explained.
"She's dehydrated. I need to hook up an IV for her. I think it's better if we take her to the infirmary." Will suggested.
"No! Bring everything you need to cure her in this room. I cannot take the risk of putting her in the same place where that traitor is!" I fumed as I began to lose control of my temper.
"Yes, Alpha." He responded and hurried to the infirmary to get the supplies he needed.
"Where are you?" I mind-linked Phelan as I remembered Olivia. She will give me a lecture if she's still here and find out about Cai's condition.
"I'm on my way to Olivia's house, then will drop my dad at the airport. Do you need anything?" He asked.
"No, just checking. Take care and send our regards to Olivia and Dmitri." I said in a straight tone.
"Sure! See ya later, bro." He replied, and I closed our mind link.
I heaved a sigh of relief after knowing that Olivia has left already. I cannot deal with her at this moment. There's a big chance that I will snap at her once she starts scolding me, and that's the worst thing that could ever happen to ruin my relationship with Cai. I can't afford to be on Olivia's wrong side. Hell no.
While waiting for Will to come back, I went to the bathroom to get a small basin with water and a face towel and wiped Cailean's face to cool her down.
If my memory is correct, this is the first time Cai got sick, and guess what? It happens under my f*****g watch!
"I'm sorry, my love. If I made you fall ill. Please get better soon." I begged and gently kissed her flaming hot forehead, then Will entered the room with Jean and Mia assisting him in carrying the supplies. Their faces became long as they laid eyes on Cai's unconscious state but didn't say anything.
"You two can leave," I commanded as they finished helping Will setting up.
"Yes, Alpha." They answered in unison and stepped out of the room. They know well what to do if they see me in this mood. Never asked me a question or comment on something.
Will began hooking the IV line, and Cai's did not even twitch when Will poked her skin with the needle. This is worse than I thought. Then he checked her vital signs, followed by a thorough physical assessment, and he said that everything's normal.
"What's wrong with her then?" I asked and couldn't hide the frustration that I've been stifling.
"Calm down, Dylan. Her vitals are ok and other than the dehydration; I don't see anything serious. As you said earlier, it's most likely over fatigue. She's new to all of these, and her body is still adjusting." He said and placed his hand on my shoulder.
"Don't worry too much; she's going to be fine. She just needs to replenish the liquid in her body and a good rest." He said with assurance.
"And continue what you were doing." He added, handing me the basin with water.
"Alright," I said and began patting her face with the damped towel and wipe it dry with another towel.
Then I placed the ice pack that Will brought on her forehead.
"Why don't you take a rest too while I'm here?" Will proposed.
"I'm ok. I cannot rest knowing that my mate is sick. I just need to use the bathroom quickly." I said and stood up to go to the bathroom.
I cleaned up quickly, thinking that it would help lighten my mood a bit, but unfortunately, it didn't. I'm still as stress as f**k!
I was about to get out of the bathroom when a disturbing scream reverberated in the entire room. I slammed the door open and rushed to Cai's side. And my whole world falls apart as I reach her side, looking at me with pleading eyes.
"Help me, Dylan. It hurts."
