I carefully poured my coffee into my travel sized mug and a couple of drops escaped onto my freshly cleaned counters when I jumped. A loud sound from the living room startled me and I frowned and wiped up the drops before hurrying into the living room to see what the commotion was. My eyes widened when I saw Sam laying on the floor shirtless. The sheets I had given him to sleep on tangled between his long legs and the fold out couch. A groan escaped his lips and it was husky due to the early morning. I rushed over to him and kneeled beside him,"Are you alright, Sam?" I asked and he opened one eye to look at me and then he opened the other and looked around the room. Probably a little disoriented from waking up by falling out of a bed. "Just peachy," He said as he sat up on the hardwood floor and I pulled back so we weren't as close. My throat became dry every time he was close to me and it made me flustered probably due to his attractiveness. I watched as he rubbed his eyes and I saw how all over the place his normally slicked back hair was and it looked really good for just waking up. I wished my hair looked that good when I woke up. He looked over at me as he itched his light stubble that I noticed he began growing out and it made his already defined jaw more prominent. "Why are you dressed up?" He asked and I looked down at my navy dress with a creme belt. "Oh I have school," I said and his eyebrows furrowed and then I was surprised when he remembered "Oh, yes I almost forgot you were a school teacher!" He said and then looked around before standing up and I squeaked when he was just in boxers. I couldn't look away as I watched him stand and his thick muscular thighs untangled themselves from the blanket," Do you like working with kids?" He asked as he looked around for his clothes and I cleared my throat. "U-uh yeah," I said trying to snap out of my gaze," I don't put up with the boogers and tantrums for nothing," I said and he chuckled as he bent over to slip the black dress pants on from last night. I watched his back muscles flex as he did and I sucked in my bottom lip at the sight. "I love kids," He stated with a huge smile and I looked down at my hands and smiled at the thought of him with children. "I don't mean to pry, but why don't you have any? You're at the prime age and you're married," I asked cautiously because I'm naturally a curious person. "Cassandra doesn't like kids," He said with a sigh as he began to slip on his slightly wrinkled dress shirt. I felt bad for him because he seemed to adore kids. "Oh," was all I could say and he finished getting ready silently. He walked over to me while I was still on the floor and he held out a hand and I smiled and took it so he could help me up. Once I was on my feet and was about to go fetch my coffee he gripped my hand and pulled me into his chest. My eyes widened as I fell into him and I soon was enclosed by his strong arms as they wrapped around me like a cage I never wanted to escape from. It was weird at first but when he embraced me it soon became heaven. My arms wrapped around his torso and I could feel his warm breath tickle my neck as he said, "Thank you for being so kind to me," He said and I pulled away and smiled up at him. "It's what friends are for," I said before patting him on the shoulder and I saw something flash in his eyes. I turned away ignoring it and went to fetch my coffee. He walked into the kitchen typing on his phone and I glanced up as I packed my bag for the day. "Can I drive you to work? It's the least I could do!" He said putting his phone in his pocket and then smiling up at me. I looked at the clock on my oven and knew I would never make it on time if I waited for the bus. "That would actually be really helpful, thank you!" I said as I hooked my bag over my shoulder and walked out my door with him on my tail. We both got into his sleek-probably very expensive car and began to drive. “So do you not go in to your office today?" I asked as we came to a stop at a red light. "Not today, I have a surgery today at 2," He said and I nodded very curious about what he does considering he is both an OB/GYN and a neonatal surgeon. "What kind of surgery?"I asked leaning on the middle console of his nice sports car and looked at him. He looked over at me and smiled at my interest. "Well, sadly one of my patients has a heart murmur, but the good news is I caught it early on. So I can correct it or at least improve it during surgery," He explained and I was amazed with how he was capable of doing such things. "What you do is just incredible!" I said and he chuckled, "You save lives!" I was gobsmacked with how intelligent a person could be. "Gosh I barely know you and I'm proud of you," I said to myself but he heard it and grinned at me. "Thank you, Mar" He said while his strong hand squeezed my knee and then returned to the stick shift. My knee burned from his touch but it was a good kind of burn. We got to the school I taught at and Sam pulled up against the curb. Children were running around greeting their friends and sharing stories of their weekends while others hugged their mother and father goodbye. I looked over at Sam and saw him looking at the scene before him with want. I felt bad that he couldn't have kids because of his wife. Well, he could have them but she didn't want them. "You'll have this one day, I promise," I said as I squeezed his hand and he snapped out of his gaze and smiled sadly at me before hopping out of the car and hurrying over to my side. "Thank you," I said as he helped me out of the car like a gentleman. He took a step forward as he looked down at me with an unknown expression and I took a step back as well which caused my back to press against his car. What was he doing? He smirked at me and rested his hand on his car. I looked up at him with wide eyes because we were only half a foot away from each other. "I want to see you again," He said and I bit my lip and I saw his eyes flicker to the movement, "I like the way I feel when I'm around you, you make the world seem like a better place than it actually is. I need a friend right now," He explained and my lips curled into a smile. "How about I cook you dinner next time you’re free?" I asked and he grinned and nodded. "That sounds like a great idea," He said and I saw his hand coming up to meet my side but the sound of my name being called stopped it. "Miss.Penny!" My student, Frankie shouted as she came running up to me and I smiled at her. Sam took a step to the side so the little girl was able to run up to me with ease. "Hi, Love!" I said as I caressed her head as her arms wrapped around my legs. "Who's this?" Frankie asked as she pointed to Sam and then she looked at him," Are you her boyfriend?" She asked as she wiggled her eyebrows. My eyes widened and Sam chuckled and squatted down. "Nope," He said playfully as he smiled at her. "Are you her friend?" She asked and he nodded, "Who's a boy!" She said excitedly and she took off running towards the other kids shouting," Miss. Penny has a boyfriend!" "You have about 3 Seconds till you are bombarded with questions," I said and his eyebrows furrowed but it was too late. A pack of kids came running in his direction and began asking random questions. It was actually really adorable to see them all look up at him with wonder and excitement as he answered each and every question. I watched as his smile never faded and he was eating this all up. "I'm a surgeon," He answered to one of the questions and they all in unison said 'cool!' "What kind of surgeon?" Another asked and Sam would turn his full attention to the child who asked. "The kind that helps mommy's when they are gonna have a baby," he explained and they all nodded quickly and then another kid asked a question. "How are babies made?" He asked and Sam's eyes widened at the 6 year olds question and he looked up at me for help. I giggled and quickly intervened. "Okay kids that's enough questions for Dr.Knight," I said as I gently ushered them towards the entrance of the school. "Wow I should just bring you in for show and tell next time, they loved you," I said and Sam was still watching all the kids run into the building with a big grin on his face. He chuckled, "You have the best job in the world," He said and I rolled my eyes playfully and grabbed my bag from inside the car. "I'll see you later," I said casually as he grinned and I was surprised when he pulled me close by my hand to press a friendly kiss to my cheek. "Have great day, Mar" He whispered in my ear before pulling away and smiling innocently at my wide-eyed expression. "Y-yup good luck on your surgery," I said before waving goodbye to him and I scurried into the building quickly. # "How can a child even get a toy car stuck up his nose?" Tessa asked over the phone and I shrugged as I continued cleaning the paint off of my fingers from today's arts and crafts. "No clue, but that was definitely the highlight of my morning," I said as I spun around and continued to stir the potato soup on the stove. It was raining outside and I always had potato soup when it rained. "Are you sure? Because I think waking up to a hot sexy man would be the highlight," She teased and I rolled my eyes. "Married man," I said and I'm glad I didn't share about his marriage issues because she could use that against me. I'm not one to tell others business, I only told her how we were friends and he needed a place to sleep and that was all she needed to know. She didn't pry because she was still ecstatic that I had a man in my house. "Whatever," She grumbled and I was going to say something but a knock on the door got my attention. "I gotta go, someone's at the door," I said and we said our goodbyes and I walked over to the door. It was 7 o'clock and I wondered who on earth could be here at this hour. Maybe it was one of my neighbors wanting something. I glanced in the mirror and mh hair was a little messy from the days work and I was still in my blue dress but the stockings I wore were long gone. I opened the door and my eyes widened as I saw a drenched Sam Knight. His face was sorrowful and he looked so miserable in the hard rain. His dark hair was impossibly darker as the water dropped down from the stray hairs falling into his face. He was in dark blue scrubs with a black zip up hoodie. "Sam?" I asked with a confused tone and he smiled sadly at me but it looked like he was gonna break any second. "Hey Mer, I was wondering if I could take you up on that dinner tonight?" He asked and his voice was groggy like he was holding back a sob. I furrowed my eyebrows as I stared at him with concern and I quickly nodded and stepped aside to let him in. He cautiously walked into my warm house and I could feel how cold he was from here. "Let me get you some dry clothes," I said and he nodded as he stood in the entryway. I quickly got some of my brothers clothes that they had left last time they stayed and I brought them to him. He was still in the same spot and I handed them to him, "The bathrooms down the hall. How do you feel about potato soup?" I asked and the corner of his lip twitched and he nodded. "That sounds great right now," He said and I watched him walk down to the bathroom before I turned around and got him a bowl. I set it down on the coffee table before going over to the fire place and hanging his jacket that he'd taken off on the floor in front of it. I turned on the flames and I immediately felt the room getting warmer. I heard the door to the bathroom open and I looked over my shoulder from my spot on the couch and saw Sam shuffle out with his eyes on the wet clothes in his hands. He was wearing a black t-shirt and black basketball shorts. The black shirt was a little small on his arms because his arm muscles were a little too big for the material. "Here," I said as I held my hands out for his clothes and he handed them to me and I went to hang them by the fire. As I was hanging his scrubs I heard the sound of the spoon hitting against the bowl and the the soft slurp of him trying the soup. I turned around and saw him sitting on the couch slowly eating the soup as he stared into the bowl obviously deep in thought. I walked over and took a seat next to him and grabbed my bowl and began to eat. I wanted to ask him why he was so upset, but sometimes people just need someone with them when they are like this. He can talk when he's ready. "Do you want some more?" I asked when he set the empty bowl on the coffee table. He shook his head and told me no. He waited while I finished mine and when I set mine beside his his eyes drifted up to meet mine. I smiled softly at him and his eyes glazed over and I knew he wanted to cry. "You can cry if you want, I'm not going to judge," I said and he nodded and looked down at his hands. He surprised me by laying down and resting his head in my lap and I gasped. His long legs fit perfectly on the couch and I was glad I decided to get the big one because of how often my brothers visit. "He didn't make it," He whispered and I bit my lip as I saw a stray tear fall down his cheek and land on my bare thigh. "Oh Sam," I said as my hand didn't hesitate to rest on his chest, "I'm so sorry," I said and he closed his eyes which forces a couple more tears to fall onto my skin. The warm liquid left cold trails behind as it dropped onto my legs. "There was nothing more I could do, I had to tell that mother that her 4 month old didn't make it. She barely had a chance to know her own son." He explained sadly and I felt a tear fall down my own cheek at the story. My free hand ran through his soft hair to try to comfort him and when I realized what I did I pulled away. His hand cupped my hand on his chest and he told me not to stop so I rubbed his head again. "I've never seen someone so heartbroken as that mother was and I was expecting her to call me every name in the book, but she just froze and and the only emotion she showed was in her eyes. They held so much pain." He said as his throat choked up. "This was my first death on my table," I raised my hand from his chest to his chin and caressed the stubble. "You did all you could Sam," I assured him and he nodded. "I couldn't take the pain away from that mother," He said and I shook my head. "Oh Sam I'm so so sorry," I said as I looked into his sad blue eyes. We sat in the quiet for a while and when the sound of the fire cracking was mixed with the sound of Sam's soft snores I found myself dozing off.
