"See it wasn't that bad!" Tessa said as she put her hands on her slender hips and gave me the 'I-told-you-so' look. I rolled my eyes and looked back down at my book on my phone to hide my blush. I failed to mention to her the almost uh...finishing part. It had been a whole 2 weeks since the appointment and I've been putting off this conversation with Tessa because I didn't want her to embarrass me. I watched Tessa spin around and look at her backside in the mirror, "Anyway, are you ready to go?" She asked and I nodded and stood up to smooth out my knee-length rose-colored dress that hugged my torso but flared out around my hips. We had a wedding to attend, well Tessa had a wedding to attend and I was her plus one. She said she'd rather go to a funeral than to this wedding of her twice removed cousins uncle's friend. Her family was very big and with that comes random weddings for people she doesn't even know. "I swear there better be an open bar," She grumbled as she pulled up her strapless dress that was threatening to slip off. I already know that dress is gonna be a problem when she does the cupid shuffle after downing half a bottle of vodka. It was inevitable. We waltzed out of the bathroom and I followed her to the large ballroom where the wedding reception was being held. Laughter and music were seeping through the walls as we approached the glass doors that led us into the heart of the noise. Tessa made a b-line towards the bar and I tried desperately to keep up with her as she weaved through the crowd. She was an expert with crowds, I on the other had had a little more trouble. I chose to be polite and said excuse me while she would just shove through. "Halle-fuckin-lujah!" She said as she discovered it was an open bar and she didn't hesitate to order two shots of vodka. I watched her throw one back and then snatch the one I was sipping on out of my hands and then throw it back as well. "Are you okay you seem...nervous?" I asked and she sighed as she grabbed my hand. "An old fling is supposed to be here and I'm honestly very nervous about seeing him," She explained as we walked and I nodded and looked around to see if I could guess which one it was. "What does he look like?" I asked and she informed me that he was blonde and tall and was on the buff side. I nodded my head casually and glanced around again. My eyes set on a very attractive man that was in the middle of listening to a story from a man with his back to me. I watched as he grinned and his perfectly white teeth shined and blinded me from here. He fit her vague description and he was around her age so I took a wild guess and nudged her and pointed. "Oh my god! Do I look okay!" She said as she began to smooth out her perfect hair and I assumed I was right with whom I picked. "You look beautiful, now go talk to him!" I said with a smile and she shook her head and told me to come with her and to which I accepted. She pulled me over and casually bumped into him, smooth. "Ryan!" She said with a fake surprised expression, but he ate it up and grinned down at her with a pleasant look about him. "Well I'll be damned, is that you Tessa Fuller?" He said with a hint of a southern accent and the two hugged. I smiled at the moment and watched the two pull away and he kept his arm wrapped around her waist which I'm sure she didn't mind a bit. "Tessa these are my friends from college," He motioned to the group in front of him and I glanced at them for the first time and my eyes widened as he introduced all of them,- "and last and certainly least, Samuel Knight," Ryan teased him and Samuel glared at him playfully before casually looking at me and his calm expression changed in a snap as he realized I was standing in front of him. His face changed to a blank slate as his eyes casted a shadow over me that I couldn't get free from no matter how much I avoid his gaze. Well this is awkward. "Well it's lovely to meet all of you," She said to Samuel and the two other men whose names were Alex and Tyler," This is my lovely friend, Mary," She said as she motioned towards me while still pressed into Ryans side. I smiled and shook Alex and Tyler's hand and I glanced up meekly as I held my hand out to Dr.Knight or as Ryan introduced him, Samuel. His long thick fingers wrapped around my small ones in a firm handshake that lasted a second longer than it should have. "Mary," He greeted with a hint of amusement in his voice and I bit the inside of my cheek and looked up at him. The others engaged themselves in different conversations. Tessa and Ryan chatting and Tyler and Alex slowly drifting off to mingle. "Dr.Knight," I said slowly and he smirked as he stuck his hands into his pockets and looked down at me. "What a pleasant surprise," He said and it seemed more like he was saying that to himself so I didn't bother replying,"Can I get you a drink?" He asked and casually motioned with his free hand towards the bar. I looked at him and then to the bar as I bit my lip. Isn't this supposed to be awkward? Seeing a man that had his fingers inside of you a few days ago "S-sure?" I said more like a question and he raised an eyebrow at me with a playful smirk. I cleared my throat,"Yes I'd love to," I said more confidently and he seemed satisfied. I jumped slightly when his large hand landed on the middle of my back to help guide me through the crowd. His hand felt like fire on my back and I scolded myself for wearing a backless dress. "What do you want to drink?" He asked as he looked at me with his full attention which was very intimidating. "Water please," I said and he snickered and shook his head and leaned into me. He brought his mouth close to my ear but still at a respectful distance and he whispered," I think you might need a harder drink considering the circumstances we last met in," He said and I pursued my lips as I tried to hide my laugh. This was beyond awkward and I'm just glad he thought so too. He grinned at me as I giggle softly and looked up at him," Alright, Dr.Knight, how about you surprise me?" I asked and his amused look never faltered. "Alright, then how about you call me Samuel?" He asked as he motioned to the bartender to get us a drink and his eyes returned quickly back to me. "How about I call you Sam?" I asked as I sat on the bar stool next to him as he leaned against the bar. As I sat down I was able to be at the same height as his leaned over state. "I think that's doable," He said as he handed me my drink and I brought it to my lips, not breaking eye contact. I winced as the burning liquid flowed down the back of my throat,"Oh my gosh! I thought this was to calm the nerves not to make me black out!" I said and he laughed and it was a deep laugh that was contagious. "Well, either way, you won't be nervous," He pointed out and I narrowed my eyes at him playfully before laughing again. Once the laughter died down he looked at me with amused eyes and he looked to be in thought, "Do I make you nervous, Mary?" He said lowly as he leaned closer to me. I sucked in a breath and widened my eyes till they were in their natural doe like state. His blue eyes searched my face and as he was about to say something a woman interrupted him. "Samuel!" A woman hissed and we both looked over at a beautiful redhead stomping over to us. A groan escaped Sam's lips and I looked between the oncoming girl and him with curiosity. She looked angry and her red face blended in with her hair. She glared at him and gripped his arm,"Where the f**k have you been?!" She seethed but Sam didn't seem affected by it," I have been looking everywhere for you. They are starting to take photos and you need to be in them with me!" She said and Sam only took a sip of his drink and then sat it down. "Cassandra," He sighed but she cut him off. "I don't want to hear it!" She said as she grabbed his glass and handed it harshly to me, "Take this away and make sure he doesn't have anymore," She snapped never taking her fiery eyes off of Sam. He only met her stare with a calm yet intimidating gaze. "Oh I don't work here," I stuttered as I fumbled with the glass she practically threw at me. This made her eyes snap to mine and I was amazed at how well Sam was able to meet this stare. It was terrifying. "Then what the hell are you still doing here?" She snapped and my eyes widened. Before I could embarrass myself any further Sam stood up, "Come on," His tone was short and he grabbed Cassandra's arm and walked away. I let out a breath and didn't move till my heart rate was normal again. That was one scary woman. I was left alone the rest of the night because Tessa was attached at the hip with Ryan and something tells me I'm gonna have to find another ride home. I'm surprised they haven't left yet to jump each other's bones. I was sat in the corner at an empty table and I was lonely but content as I watched everyone have fun around me. It was funny watching drunk people dance off beat to the songs the DJ would play. I loved weddings for that soul reason. When the night was coming to an end Tessa texted me saying Ryan was taking her home. I was happy that she was happy so I didn't make a fuss about it. I shuffled through the lively crowd till I was in the hallway I entered when I arrived. I walked down the dimly lit hall and I heard loud arguing so I slowed my steps. The voices were coming from around the corner and they sounded very familiar. "I'm getting really sick of this!" A male voice whisper shouted and I knew that deep husky voice. It was Sam. "Oh really?!" The woman shouted and I assumed it was Cassandra, "Maybe you wouldn't get bitched at if you weren't such a f**k up all the time!" She shouted not bothering to be quite. Sam shushed her but that only made her shout louder, "As much as I do for you, you still walk around with your head up your ass, not listening to a thing I say!" My eyes widened at her harsh words, this is not right! "First of all," Sam said still calm, "I said lower your voice. This is my family's wedding and you're being incredibly disrespectful. Yell at me all you want at home but here, now, while my sister is getting married is not the time," He said in a stern tone, "Second, you do nothing but take my money. That's all that this relationship is now and I'm getting sick and tired of it. When we first got married I didn't think you were the gold digger type. I guess I was just blinded by love-" His words were silenced with the sound of a slap. I gasped and clapped my hand over my lips, "f**k you! You're nothing without your money or me so get that through your thick head," She seethed and my eyes widened,"Don't bother coming home tonight!" She shouted and the sound of her heels began to stomp away. After the sound of her heels disappeared Sam let out a long sigh that led into a groan. I peeked my head around the corner to see him running his hands through his hair in frustration. He was pacing back and forth. I cleared my throat and his frustrated eyes snapped to meet me and they instantly softened, "Hi Mary," He said trying to sound happy but it wasn't working. I pulled my lips to the side and tilted my head. I raised my eyebrows, "Do you need a place to sleep tonight?" I asked and his fake happiness dropped because he know I heard the argument. He looked sad now and dropped his gaze to the ground. "No, you don't have to do that," He said and I shook my head and took a few steps toward him. I rested my hand on his shoulder and moved my head till I was looking into his eyes. "Really, I insist," I said with a smile, "You shouldn't have to go to a lonely hotel room when you're sad. Unless that's what you want then-" "Thank you, Mary," He said smiling softly and I nodded. "So is that a yes?" I asked and he still looked hesitant but my need to make people happy kept me talking," I make a mean cup of hot chocolate?" I said and his lips twitched slightly and I grinned, "I'll put extra marshmallows in it just for you," I said again and he couldn't hide the smile and I knew I won him over. "Fine," He grumbled and I grinned because I loved making people feel better. "After you, Dr. Knight!" I said cheekily and held out my arm to the door.
