I grin as I see Sam duck into the restaurant to escape the rainstorm outside. He shrugged his coat off and looked around the restaurant and I held up my hand which caught his attention and a huge smile spread across his face. It made my heart pick up its pace and I had to remind myself we are strictly friends. He walked over to me, our eyes never drifting apart, his intense stare was hard to look away from. It was so captivating.
"Hi, Mar," He said as he rested his hand on the side of my arm and leaned in and kissed the top of my head. It made my cheeks heat up and I looked up at him through my lashes. He just smiled innocently and sat down in his chair. Okay, he didn't mean anything by that, it was just a greeting.
"How are you?" I asked as I leaned in and rested my forearms on the table and I looked at him and waited for him to speak. This was the first time we were meeting up since we decided to make 'being friends' work.We choose dinner because it was simple and public because I don't think we are ready to trust ourselves to be alone together.
"I'm doing fantastic!" He said and his eyes shined as he spoke and it made me happy to see him happy. "Cassandra-" He began as he dug around in his jacket and pulled out paper," Went to her first ultrasound," He said as he handed me the sonogram with a proud smile as he pointed to the fuzzy picture. "That's his foot," He pointed to an outline that I guess looked like a foot but it was hard to tell. He's seen plenty of sonograms and knows what he's looking for so I trust him on what he's saying, "And that's his face!" He said as he pointed to another blur and I smiled.
"You keep saying he, do you think it will be a boy?" I asked and he grinned.
"I don't know, I just have this feeling it will be a boy," He said and my heart melted at how adoring he was of the baby and it wasn't even here yet.
"What was it like hearing the heartbeat?" I asked and his smile dropped and he looked disappointed.
"I couldn't go to the appointment, I had a surgery." He said as he fiddled with the silverware,"It makes me wonder if it will always be like this, me being busy with work and not being there for him," Sam said and I frowned at his sudden change of mood," My dad was always so consumed with work and I rarely saw him, and I'm afraid that's how it's gonna be when I'm a father," he explained and I looked at him with sympathy and reached over the table and grabbed his hand to stop his fidgeting. He simply ran his thumb over my fingers as I spoke to him.
"Something tells me you're going to spoil this kid rotten and he's gonna be filled with so much love he's not going to know what to do with it. You're going to be a great father and I don't want you to think stuff like that, you aren't your father, you're Sam: The most loving and caring person I know."
He smiled down at our hands and then squeezed tight on my hand,"Thank You, Mary. You always know what to say," he said and I smiled back at him. The dinner continued with us catching up and us laughing at funny stories we would tell and I was in the best mood. Sam always put me in a good mood.
"-and then Westen laughed so hard milk came out of his nose and onto my teacher," I said through the laughter of my own and it was hard to get out the story because I was laughing so hard. I don't think he could understand me but he still watched me with amazement as I spoke, the look he gave me made my laughter die down because my heart was beating too fast.
"I'd love to meet your brothers in person," He said and I was about to reply but my name being called made me stop. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I looked up into warm brown eyes and I smiled.
"Brenton, what are you doing here?" I asked as I stood and gave him a hug. Brenton and I have become somewhat close through the times he catches me in the lobby of my apartment and rides the elevator up with me. Every time I've talked to him the conversation was pleasant and he was very interesting, I'd learned he was going to start teaching at my school in a couple of days because one of the teachers is going on maternity leave.
"I'm here having dinner with my family," He motioned behind him and I smiled. How sweet, he still finds time to spend with his family.
"Oh how lovely, It's weird seeing you outside of the elevator," I teased and he grinned which caused dimples to appear on each cheek and it was adorable.
"I know, maybe we should see each other outside of the apartment building more often, so we can adapt better," he said playfully.
"Absolutely, this is strange, might need to see you for dinner some night," I played along and he seemed pleased with my response.
"Good, how about dinner Friday?" He asked and I was shocked he was being serious, but he might be a good distraction from Sam so why not.
"Friday it is," I said our smiles never faltering.
"It's a date," He said as he went to give me another hug and my cheeks heated at the thought of going on a date. I hugged him back and said goodbye and watched him walk away. I sat down with a pleasant smile and folded my napkin on my lap and I looked up at Sam to see him grimacing at me and my smile dropped.
"Are you okay?" I asked as my eyebrows furrowed and he nodded with pursed lips which completely contradicted himself.
"Just peachy," He bit back in response and I frowned at his sudden mood change. Geeze, what got into him?
