ALPHA CHRIS BAXTER
I continued on to see Council Member Perry as planned. He seemed happy to see me when he opened the door. I had a feeling that he would feel differently once I told him why I was there. I knew that what I was about to say could cause all sorts of trouble, but I had to do it. Otherwise, Chloe would be gone soon, and the Goddess only knows what that asshole Alpha Simmons would do to her if he found out that she was my mate. Besides, I couldn't bear the thought of her being that far away, miserable , and mistreated. I followed him inside and accepted his invitation to sit. He asked what the reason for my visit to his room was. I sighed deeply and began to explain. He sat quietly as I told him everything. I held nothing back. He nodded as he took it in. His face was thoughtful. "This is a very delicate situation, and it needs to be handled with the utmost care," he said. I told him that I completely agreed, but that I wanted it handled as quickly as possible. I said that I didn't want my mate returning to the Winter Falls pack with Alpha Simmons. He promised that he would see what he could do but asked me to keep my distance from Chloe this morning. He said that it would be easier to convince Alpha Simmons and the rest of the council that I meant no disrespect if I was seen to be maintaining a decent distance until the situation was resolved. I knew that he was right, so I agreed, though I knew that it would be hard to stay away from her.
I decided that it would be easier for me to just shut myself in my office and wait it out. That I could just distract myself with the pack business. I thanked Council Member Perry and excused myself. I left his room, feeling heavy with the uncertainty that was filling me. What if the council decided to back Alpha Simmons? He could claim that their marriage was binding, as was his agreement with Chloe's father. They likely wouldn't want to start a fight with the Night Sky pack. Colton Drake wasn't an enemy that anyone wanted, not even the council. They may decide that to keep the peace, Chloe and I would have to reject each other and break our mate bond. I would not relax until I knew what their decision was. I find myself wondering if they do decide that rejection is the solution to the problem. Could I do it? Would I obey their orders and say those words, or would I take Chloe and run? Would she even run with me?
???????????????????????
I had watched as Chris's face fell at the sight of his mate being taken away by her husband. He looked as though he wanted to punch him and take her from him. Part of me hoped that he gave into those urges and did it. He would be nailing his own coffin lid closed if he did. Unfortunately, he controlled himself, and she disappeared with Alpha Simmons. I did enjoy the look on Chris's face, though. I followed him as he headed off. I wondered where he was going. He stopped outside the room that Council member Perry was staying in. I waited a few moments and then snuck up and pressed my ear against the door. I heard Chris tell him everything. I listened to Council member Perry assure Chris that he would do what he could. I felt my anger rise. No! I would not just sit back and allow Chris to just get everything that he wanted. Just like he always had. I had taken comfort in the misery that Chris had felt at losing Amber, but losing his mate would be so much better.
I heard them saying their goodbyes and heard Council Member Perry's warning that Chris should keep this to himself for now. I hurried away before Chris emerged from the room and ducked into an empty room. I didn't want to get caught eavesdropping. I slumped down into the armchair, irritated at myself. I knew that I should have just let Alpha Simmons know that his wife was in Chris's room last night. That would have almost guaranteed a war. Not that I really wanted a war. I had no desire for innocent werewolves to get hurt. I just wanted to make those who had wronged me pay. My eyes fell on the coffee table. There was a notepad and pen sitting there, as there was in all the rooms. An idea began to swirl through my mind. Perhaps there was still a chance to make that mistake right.
I wrote a note, taking great care to disguise my writing. Once I was done, I slipped it under the door of Alpha Simmons' room. Hopefully, after breakfast, he would come up to his room and find it. I walked away pleased with myself. I had lit the fuse, and now I just have to sit back and wait for the fireworks. I entered the dining hall and got myself a plate of food. The bacon and eggs that I was eating tasted fantastic today. Although, maybe that was just because I was in such a good mood right now. I glanced over at where Alpha Simmons sat, stuffing his face. I watched as his Luna brought him another plateful. I did feel bad for her. She had done nothing to me, yet she would likely be hurt by all of this. Alpha Simmons seemed the type to punish her for finding her mate. I couldn't help that, though. It wasn't my fault that she was Chris's mate. It was the Moon Goddess who had decided that. The blame was hers, not mine.
As I watched Alpha Simmons, I was just waiting for him to leave and go upstairs. A moment of doubt flickered through my mind. What if he didn't go back to his room? That jackass would probably have her go and pack his bag for him. If she found that note, then Chris would know that not only did someone know his little secret, but that there was someone working against him. I couldn't have that. My plans would all work better if he didn't suspect anything. I had already been waiting and watching long enough. I was not about to allow it to have been for nothing. Maybe I could get the note back. Find a way to slip it directly to him, maybe put it in his pocket. I was about to do just that when Alpha Simmons noisily stood up, scraping his chair on the wooden floor. He loudly informed his wife that he was going to take a nap and was not to be disturbed under any circumstances. I relaxed. He would be the one to find my note after all.
