Chapter One
"This house will be bigger, it's closer to my work, and it's even closer to your new school"
It was obvious she was trying to make the situation seem better than it actually was. She always tries to fix things that could never be put back together.
Something continually continued to ring in my head. "Why do you even work?" I asked my mom as I looked out the window. The sun was high in the sky, the air humid. I took a deep breathe out the window as i watched the houses go by.
I heard my mom sigh and i regretted what i said. "Not here, Leigh, please. You need to grow up"
"Says the full time second wife" I murmured.
"Enough" she snapped.
I scowled. I looked at Nate in the back seat. He was sound asleep. His arms were limped at his side, his head bobbing up and down occasionally. His curly hair moving every time he does. I can't believe he's already four.
We continued to drive in silence. This was our third move in ten years. Every time my father's wife got the slightest clue about his affair with my mother, we would have to move further away. Now we were in Los Angela opposed to Long beach and I was past sick and tired.
"Look, kid's your age" she smiled as she pointed out the window
As we passed by an open creek, I stared at group of teenagers who were around my age. I examined them with a lack of interest as a red BMW caught my eye. Leaning against it was a tall guy with Umber hair. There was a girl with long platinum blond hair leaning against his body with her arms around him.
He had a slim built and broad shoulders. His eyes were dull, bored, and expressionless. Our eyes met for a brief second before he looked away without a second glance.
"Here we are" she said as we pulled up to a blue house with white blinds. I stared at it for a few moments examining the larger tree that leaned against the far balcony.
"We'll need to cut that down" I murmured
"Don't be silly, it adds value to the property"
"Right" I rolled my eyes as I stepped out of the car. I felt the need to stretch even though the drive wasn't that long. I looked around the neighbourhood, admiring the scenery. The houses were almost identical to each other except for their colours.
I watched as the moving vans parked along the sidewalk.
I opened the back door of the Porsche and unbuckled Nate from his car seat, lifting him out.
"He really went big this time" I observed as I looked around the open space, leaving the front door open for the movers.
"That's because he cares, honey" My mom asserted. She smiled over at me. I resist the urge to role my eyes.
Walking upstairs took a bit more effort than it normally would. Nate was really gaining weight.
I opened the first room door and was surprised to see that it was already furnished. It was like something out of a catalogue. I was disgusted.
He always thought he could pay us off. My mom might be blind but i was not and would never be. Marriage was a joke.
I walked down the hallway to the next door, which I assumed was Nate's room. I placed him in his bed, happy that there were railings on all four sides. I knew how bad he slept.
I kissed Nate's forehead gently and quietly exited his room.
I stopped at the door at the end of the hall, hesitating for a split second before opening the door. The bed was huge as usual, the walls were dark and neutral. The light from the balcony lite the room nicely. I walking into the room and sat on the bed, taking the note i knew was waiting for me.
I hope the move goes well. If you're in need of anything, feel free you use this credit card. Dad
I don't have a father, I said to myself. I opened the draw beside me and threw the note and the card inside. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed the last number i called.
-
"Well at least you guys aren't homeless" Ashlee laughed into my ear
"I feel like he's always trying to pay us off for being quiet..." I responded in the phone
"I'm sure it's not like that, Leigh. Give it a try. In a few more mouths we'll be off to University. You won't have to go back if you feel so strongly but i'm sure you will..."
I sighed "you know I have to see Nate"
"I know" she continued "It's almost like he's your own son"
I laughed and after a brief pause i smiled at what she said. "Few more months..."
"UCLA won't know what hit 'em"
We laughed and then fell quiet.
"I miss you, Ash"
"You too. It won't be that bad. Try to have fun. Go. Do something productive." she scold
I smiled as I hung up the phone.
After a few hours of updating a few more of my friends who were back in Long Beach, I headed back downstairs to get my possessions. The movers have already unloaded the large items like the couches and TV from the van. I sat on the stair steps and watched as they began to bring in the boxes.
After the finished, I grabbed the ones with my name marked on them and took them to my room. In total i had about six. I don't keep sentimental things, they were mainly my clothing. Wondering if all my clothing could fit in the closet, I opened the double doors, completely resentful as it revealed a walk-in closet.
I wasn't completely upset that i had my own bathroom, though. Maybe he did something right. For once.
Leaving the boxes scattered, I went back down to grab the ones for Nate's room. I met my mom at the stairs.
"These movers are cute" my mom acknowledged giving me a little nudge and a wink.
I rolled my eyes as I hid my smile. One of them entered into the hallway with more boxes in his arms. He had sweat dripping down his face and down his arms. He had dark hair and deep brown eyes. He looked to be in his early twenties.
When he placed the boxes on the ground and smiled over at me, I blushed. "Hi"
He continued to smile at me but then continue working.
"What?" I asked my mom, trying to hold back my smile. I grabbed the box with Nate's name on it.
"Nothing" she said nonchalantly "are those for Nathan's room? You don't have to worry about those. School starts in a few days and you still need to get yourself straightened out"
"No, it's fine" I stated stubbornly. I heading up the stairs with the box leading the way.
After going up and down the stair collecting boxes, i started to breathe heavily. s**t, i really need to work out, i thought to myself. Maybe now, i'll take gym seriously. Yeah, right.
As I entered into Nathan's room with the last box, he sat up in his bed. I rest the box on the floor and walked over to the window in the room, closing the blinds. Suddenly disappointed that the sun was now gone, i sat down on the floor and looked over at his drowsy face.
"You're up" I smiled
"Is that-t-t mine?" he stammered, crawling over the railing onto the floor.
I nodded my head. "You want to help me?"
He nodded, extremely excited. I pulled him onto my lap and we went through his things, putting them in their proper spot. After a few hours, he became tired again.
After putting him to sleep and straightening up his room, I went back to my room and crashed on the bed.
"A few more months..."
I pulled the sheet over my head.
