Thank you Elisabeth.” Miss Milore says to me as I hand her a cup of coffee.
“It's a pleasure.” I say leaving the office. I shut the door and walk to my desk. The one which used to belong to Mrs Green. I sit down and look around. Apart fron my luxurious black chair and marble desk, there's a cupboard for my files and drawers attached to the desk. I trace my finger to the end of the desk and sigh.
It's been two weeks...since you know what and I haven't talked or seen my parents. They leave hundreds of messages and please calls for me on a daily basis but I don't even bother. I'm heartbroken you know. Imagine waking up one day and being told that your parents who you love so much, aren't really yours.
But I'm proud of myself. For holding my s**t together. A soft sigh escapes my lips. I know deep down that they never wanted to know that I'm adopted. But now it's complicated. I don't think my biological mother would press charges against them for no reason.
The telephone rings all of a sudden and startles me. I chuckle at how jumpy I am.
“Melody Milore's assistant Elizabeth speaking. How can I help you?” I say professionally. I'm slowly getting the hang of being an assistant to one of the biggest names in the world.
“Uh, yeah. This is Cody Milore. Hope the name rings a bell?”
The universe knows why I blush.
“Yes sir of course.” I reply in a completely different tone.
“Good. I would like to meet my mother so if you could please squeeze me into her schedule. It's urgent.”
“Consider it done sir.” I quickly check the schedule. “Would...11am be convenient?”
“Yes that's perfect. Thank you.” he says politely.
“No problem sir.” I say quickly before hanging up.
I sigh heavily. He has an effect on me that I don't understand. And I only met him twice. I go to Miss Milore's office and inform about her meeting with Cody. Afterwards, we go to a meeting with Jerusso. Jerusso is Miss Milore's toughest competitor. He's a stellar fashion designer. And I was so stocked when I found out I would get to meet him. It's only been two weeks since I started working and I've met four celebrities. All clients of Miss Milore.
I just scribble down a bunch of notes during the meeting with Jerusso. After that, time basically drags by. I find myself very excited to see Cody. I wait impatiently at my desk. The elevator door opens and he comes out. He's wearing sweat pants and a matching sweater. Holding a huge gift basket, white sneakers and messy hair. Is it even legal for you to look this good Cody Milore?
He smiles at me and I swoon.
“Miss Montague, right?” he says walking towards my desk.
“Yes sir. Welcome.”
He places the huge basket on my desk.
“Please accept this. I feel guilty about last time. And for Britney's behavior.”
“Oh no sir. There's no need to feel guilty. I never held a grudge about it. And I can't possibly accept this.” I say pushing the basket towards him.
“Well Miss Montague,” he says pushing the basket back at me, “if you don't take the basket, technically, you're refusing my apology.” he says pouting playfully.
I hesitate but take the basket and smile gratefully.
“Thank you.”
“No. Thank you Miss Montague.” he says with a smirk.
I gesture to the huge glass door.
“She must be waiting.”
He nods and goes in.
I plop back onto my chair and take a few deep breaths. I can't be here when he comes back. I carry my basket and quickly get into the elevator. I'll just put the basket in my car and stay in the bathroom until he leaves. When I get to the first floor, I quickly greet Kate, the receptionist, who has also unexpectedly become a good friend.
Her eyes widen at the large gift basket.
“I saw Cody Milore about 10 minutes ago with this gift basket,” her voice drops to a whisper, “Is something going on between you two?”
“What? Of course not!” I laugh.
“Yeah right.” she mocks
“I'll be right back.” I say going outside to my car.
I open the backseat and carefully put the basket.
A smile slowly creeps onto my lips. Could it be possible that Cody likes me? Why else would he an apology gift basket for someone he hardly knows? I hum happily as I go back inside to Kate.
“I have to go back upstairs but I'll tell all the details about me and Cody later.” I say practically bragging.
She nods, obviously impatient to hear everything.
As I turn around, I spot Cody with one of the agency models. She's giggling and twirling a strand of her hair while Cody towers over her. I look back at Kate who's already deeply absorbed into her work.
My eyes wander back to Cody and the model. Our eyes meet but I immediately look away. Swiftly, I walk across the room into the corridor that leads to the private elevator making sure not to look at Cody. The rest of the day is a blur. It's eight pm. Time to go home. Finally. Everyone except for me and Miss Milore, Kate, Penelope and a few other people knock off at six thirty pm. I knock off anytime Miss Milore doesn't need me anymore. That can be any time of the day. My phone rings as I approach my car. An unknown number. It might be work.
“Elizabeth speaking.”
“Um yes. Hello Elizabeth. My name is Cindy. I've been trying to get a hold of you for a while now.” a woman says in a lovely british accent.
“Well...you have me now.” I say politely. “How can I help you?”
“Well the thing is...well...I-I'm your... biological mother and...I would like us to talk.” she says uneasily.
My heart starts pounding. My mother.
“Are you still there Elizabeth?”
“Yes yes. I'm here. And I would love to talk. Just tell me when and where.”
“Well how about we have tommorow morning breakfast at any place of your choice?”
“Ok that's fine. I have to be at work by nine though. So let's have breakfast in town. There's a cafe near my workplace. I'll send you the location.”
“Ok. Thank you Elizabeth. You have no idea how much this means to me.” she says gratefully.
I can't even say anything so I just hang up. My mother. I hadn't even tried to find out where she is when I found out. Call me selfish but I was too caught up in my own drama. But I must admit, I'm happy she's meeting me. I want to build a relationship with her. She's my mom. I haven't talked to my ‘parents’ in weeks. I can't get passed the fact that I'm not their daughter. But maybe meeting Cindy is the first step.
When I get home, which is Angeline's huge penthouse, I tell her everything that happened. About Cody and Cindy and work. I go to bed and actually have a good night's rest for once in a while.
It's seven thirty am the next morning and I'm sitting in the cafe waiting for Cindy. I'm definitely much more nervous than I thought I'd be. Finally I find myself sitting across a woman with long brown curly hair and green eyes. She is tall and has a pretty face. She looks just like me! Same lips, nose, hair and eyes.
“I'm sorry I'm late. There was a bit of traffic.” she says with a smile on her face.
“Don't mind it at all. It's alright. I'm happy you're here.”
“Me too.”
“Now...I guess you'll tell me about yourself?” I say sipping my coffee.
“Ahh yes. I'm afraid there's not much to tell. My name is Esmè Larson. Cindy is a nickname my parents gave me because I love Cinderella.”
A chuckle escapes my lips.
“I'm a photographer and I'm 40 years old.”
“40?” I ask surprised, “How come? I'm 25 already.”
“Well...I had you at quite a young age.”
“Oh. So you... didn't want me?” I ask with pain in my voice.
“Oh no! God no! I loved you from the moment I knew I was going to have you. I wanted to raise you and be the best mother I could be but...I was...an addict. Drugs.”
I can almost see how much she regrets it.
“So it's just you?” I say breaking the silence.
“Yes. Well...I live with my sister in the UK. She's two years younger than you. She says she hopes to meet you one day.”
I smile.
“I would love to. And... I would love to get to know you too.” I say surprising myself.
“Me too.” she takes my hand. “I need you to talk to Lisa. Ask her what really happened.”
“I can't.” I pull my hand away from hers. “I'm not ready to see her. But... I'll call her. I promise.”
We talk some more then hug goodbye. I'm in a good mood for the rest of the day. Happy.
