Chapter 1

Eva My ears were ringing. My head was throbbing due to the lack of sleep I had last night. Stupid assignments. I didn't want to wake up. Waking up meant dragging myself out of the safety of my comforter and that was not appealing at all. I groaned and somehow managed to squint through the sunlight streaming in through the window. I glanced at my bedside clock. It was 8 o’clock already. Crap. Classes began in half an hour! I was late. Damn it. I sat up with a jerk and tried getting off the bed. I didn't realize the sheet was wrapped around my legs, and I ended up falling on my knees with a thud. Ouch. I groaned again and untangled myself. Rushing into the bathroom, I thanked God my roommate, Zoe, was gone already. I breathed a sigh of relief and rushed about trying to get myself to look presentable. After brushing my teeth, I ran my fingers through my hair trying to tame it. Not like that affected its state in any way. My hair was way too stubborn for my liking. I swore and rummaged through my drawer for a hairbrush. After a few minutes of running it through my hair, I managed to get it done. I applied a bit of gloss to my lips. That was the only sort of makeup I ever applied. I looked at myself in the mirror and decided that it would have to do. I ran around the room getting the books I required and then rushed out of the door. I walked quickly to campus trying not to break a sweat. The humid weather didn't help at all. I reached class minutes before the teacher walked in. Phew. I made it. I smiled at the girl sitting opposite. Hayley gave me a big smile noticing my heavy breathing and chuckled, “Let me guess. Assignments kept you awake?". "Yeah.", I nodded as I plonked down on my seat. Miss Leslie began the class. Opening my book and I began taking notes. She was an excellent teacher and the class was attentive to her. It helped that Math was kind of my favorite subject. The rest of the day dragged on. It was Friday and I couldn’t help but wish that classes would end soon. I couldn't wait to get some sleep during the weekend. After another two classes, I had a lunch break. Gathering my books, I made my way to the lockers. Making sure I had everything I needed for the rest of my classes, I headed over to the cafeteria. I spotted Zoe almost immediately. When she saw me, she walked over and gave me a hug. “Hey, I’m sorry I had to leave early today. I had to borrow a few notes from Amy.", she said looking at me with a frown. I shrugged and smiled at her, “It's alright, Zoe. I had to hurry too." She shook her head, "Eva you look tired. You really shouldn't stay up that late." I sighed and rubbed my eyes. "I know. It sucks. I'm just glad it’s the weekend tomorrow." She brightened up instantly. "Hell, yeah. You do remember we are going out tonight, right?" I look at her confused. "What?" "Dave and I are going to The Sapphire tonight. I checked with you last week and you promised to come. You can't change your mind now or I'm going to eat your lunch.", she pouted. I rolled my eyes. "Darn it, Zoe. This isn’t fair. I don't have a choice now, do I?" I glared at her. She laughed at me and kissed my cheek. "That's my girl.", she said. I gave her another glare and went ahead to order my lunch. She followed me not the least bit intimidated. She knew I was no good at arguing with her. "I don't have anything to wear", I looked over at her, while glancing at what was available to eat that day. She shook her head and began piling food on her lunch tray, “Of course you do. Why the hell do you think you don't?" I looked at her wondering if she had lost it. All the clothes I owned were casuals. As far as I could remember I didn’t own anything flashy or sexy. Certainly, nothing that would be appropriate to be worn at a club. Zoe turned to look at me, “I brought you the red dress for your birthday, Eva. Did you forget already?" Oh. That. It was a strapless dress that reached around mid-thigh and I thought it was a tad bit too revealing. Zoe thought it was perfect and it would look fabulous on me. That is precisely why she says she bought it for my birthday. I paled. I was uncomfortable wearing that. But there wasn't another option. I couldn't go shopping right now. And knowing Zoe she would practically shove the dress over my head even if I kicked and screamed all the way. After getting in line, I paid for my lunch and walked to where Zoe was already seated with Dave. When he saw me, Dave got up, kissing my cheek before hugging me. Dave was a great guy. The best that Zoe could possibly have. He loved her more than anything and anyone and it was visible in the way he was around her. He could barely keep his hands off her. “How did your classes go?”, he asked. I shrugged, “They were slow. How did yours go?” He stabbed the lettuce on his plate with the fork and gave me a half smile, “It was alright. I tried not to sleep through most of it. You’re coming with us tonight, right?” I laughed lightly. “Like Zoe would let me stay alive if I said I wasn’t. “, I teased. Dave looked down at her and laughed. Zoe just gave me a mock glare and continued eating. “You’re absolutely right.”, she smiled sweetly, before grabbing the brownie off my plate, making me laugh. “Now, eat up.” I shook my head in resignation. So much for having an uneventful weekend.
