Warrick’s P.O.V.
“I am his fiancée for God Sake, Mr Bernard… how can you say hide any information on her from me?” I yelled at the bank manager angrily. “I know very well who you are to Ms Lockharts, Mr Roberts. The thing is that it’s her request not to reveal her whereabouts even to her mother. She was kidnapped and is brutally injured. She is in the hospital for a long period, I assumed, since the day she managed to escape from her kidnappers. She is getting treatment and soon she will be here”, he said in a very formal tone, pissing me more than I was already. “How can you say that the girl who talked to you is not a fraud? I mean one can forge the voice, right?” I questioned him again and he smirked this time.
“You see, Mr Roberts… (he cleared his throat and I narrowed my eyes on him)… I am also her friend and there is something that only two of us know. She used that fact to make me identify her and also, I have got the request from the hospital and all the details that they have sent me belongs to her”, he clarified, and now looked annoyed with me. I stared at him and I balled up my fist while chewing my inner cheeks. “How can you transfer the money to them before my approval? It’s a joint account and you need my approval too”, I gritted my teeth but tried to stay calm. “I think you haven’t read the documents carefully before signing them when you two opened the account”, he mocked me and I narrowed my eyes on him.
“Ms Mariam Lockhart is the primary account holder and you are the secondary account holder and there is also a special request there that you can withdraw the money only after getting the approval of her or she dies leaving everything in your name whereas she needs no such approval from you. Right now, I have no request from her to give you the whole authority on the account”, he pulled up a file from a drawer and then threw it in front of me. He opened the file and then he pointed it out a particular place. My mind went haywire when I read the clause. I cursed myself internally for not giving attention to what I had signed those papers. I had shot myself on my feet on my own. I was so happy that time that I didn’t read anything that I signed. Never did I dream that I thought that Mariam would be so clever.
“Okay…. Tell me if you get any news about her condition. I am worried about her”, I said to the bank manager after regaining my composure. “Of course, you are worried for her. You are her fiancée and I think you should contact the police too. If she was kidnapped and someone is behind her life, then it may be possible that you are in danger too”, he said in a warning tone and I sucked on my breath. “Of course… I think… you are right here”, I said nervously because I really forgot that she had mentioned her k********g to the bank manager and soon this matter would go to the police. I wondered why no one had come to us by now. If she had contacted the manager, then…. I felt that someone had knocked all the air out of my lungs.
“Thanks, Mr Bernard”, I stood up with a heavy heart. He gave me a tight smile and I came out of his room hurriedly. If she was really injured and was taking treatment then there soon the police would be on our doorsteps. I almost ran towards the parking area and started my bike hurriedly. My heart was pondering loud in my heart and cold sweat was now covering my forehead. If the police reached here, I would be finished. Valerie was so mean that she would put all the blame on me. I didn’t know how I reached Mariam’s place but I came out of my stance when her mother called me. “Warrick… are you okay, son… You are looking like as you have seen the ghost”, she came near to me and I could see the concern all over her face.
“I … I … am fine, mom… I went to the bank and the bank manager told me that … that”, I paused because my voice was now choked right now. She immediately held my hands in her hands and led me inside the house. “Let’s go inside first and then you can tell me everything. You are not looking well”, she said with worry in her voice. I felt guilty for betraying Mariam right now. Her mom was a sweet woman and she was always caring towards me. She even treated me like her own son. What would she do when she would come to know that it was me who was behind Mariam’s present condition? Mariam was alive and soon I would be behind bars. The police would soon find us out and then no one would save me.
“Warrick… honey… here…. Drink some water first”, I heard her worried voice again and looked up at her blankly. It was when I realized that I was panicking and was not breathing properly. She had a glass of water in her eyes. She was holding me by my shoulder and I was now sitting on the single seat of the couch. I took the glass from her hand and gulped down the whole content in one go. I then realized that my throat was completely dry. I gave her the empty glass and thanked her in a low voice. “Take a breath, Warrick”, she said and then started rubbing my back gently. Her kind gestures were making me feel guilty more.
“I… I.. went to… th…e bank and the bank… manager… told me that… Mariam called him and … she is injured…s…someone… ki…dnapped her”, I stuttered so hard and choked on my voice in the last. Her movements on my back immediately stopped. I couldn’t muster the courage to look at her this time. There was a thick silence in the room that could be cut my knife. I had lowered my head as I didn’t want to look into her eyes this time. “She didn’t tell me that she is injured when she called me the last night”, she said in a choked voice and I snapped my head towards her.
My eyes widened in shock and I looked at her with an open mouth. “Sh…she called you?” I asked her and she nodded and at the same time, a tear escaped from her eyes. I immediately stood up and took her in my embrace. She was also a mother figure to me. She immediately put her head on my chest and started crying. I could understand her agony. Mariam was her only child and she had given all her life to raising her like the wonderful woman that Mariam was now. “Is she alright?” she asked me after a while and I sighed aloud helplessly. “I don’t know. Mr Bernard only told me that he got a request from a hospital to transfer the money in order to pay her bills there. Then he received a call from her and she talked with him. I guess Mariam is better now”, I told my assumption to her and she nodded.
She broke the hug and I made her sit on my place where I was sitting before. I went to the kitchen and brought a glass of water for her. She thanked me and wiped her face from her hands. She drank the water and then gave the glass back to me. I put down the glass on the table. I was about to say something to her to comfort her when we heard a knock on the door. “I am going”, I said to her when she was about to stand up. She nodded and I went to the door. My heart skipped a beat when I saw a police officer standing at her front door.
“Yes, Officer”, I said in a nervous tone. I was trying to hide my anxiety but clearly, I was failing. “Is Mrs Lockhart home?” he asked me and I nodded. “Who is it?” I heard her voice behind me and stepped aside. “Halo, Mrs Lockhart… I am Detective Michael Shaw. I am here to talk with you about your daughter Mariam Lockhart”, he said after introducing himself and I felt that someone had swept the ground under my feet and my head spun harder.
