I CAN SEE YOU

Mariam’s P.O.V.

My heart was pounding so hard in my chest that I could hear my own heartbeat. “Are you sure, doctor that I will see again?” I asked the doctor again and heard him sigh. “Yes, Ms Lockhart… you will again… just follow my instructions after I will remove your bandage from your eyes”, he said in a gentle tone and I couldn’t feel any annoyance in his voice. I guess all the patients of his had the same doubt that I had right now. “Okay”, I said in a timid voice and stayed still. “Where is Demitry? Hasn’t he reached yet?” I suddenly asked. “He is on his way”, I heard Dexter’s voice this time. I was a bit disappointed now because I wanted to see Demitry at first if I would really be able to see the world again.

I already had a picture of his in my mind. He had a deep and big scar on the left side of his face. I didn’t know why but I was sure that he had a major accident or a brutal attack in the past that had left that scar. Also, I felt some very small scars near that scar and on his jaw and neck on one side. He had a sharp jawline and a long forehead. He had big eyes and sharp thick brows. I wanted to see whether my assumptions are right or not. “Doc… how about I open my eyes when Demitry arrive? Whether I will be able to see with again or not, I want to do it in front of Demitry”, I said in a determination. “Okay… as you wish … then we can do one thing here”, he said, and I signalled him to speak. “Open your eyes slowly and then try to look in front of you. No one will be in front of you, only a wall. Tell us if you can see the wall. The light will be dim in the beginning in order to not to affect your eyes, and then we will increase the intensity of light slowly”, he suggested.

I was a bit reluctant but nodded slowly. “Here…. Put this on later on your eyes… your eyes will not be able to bear sharp light right now”, I could feel a pair of glasses in my hands. “Now.. open your eyes slowly….. very slowly and don’t put pressure on your eyes if you can’t see anything right now”, he instructed me and I nodded. I was already scared of the coming results. I didn’t want to be seen as weak if I didn’t see again. I knew that it would shatter all my hopes and my life yet I was optimistic and I trusted Demitry’s words. He said that I would be able to see again then I was sure that I would see again.

I blinked my eyes furiously after opening my eyes. I had lowered my eyes and my heart almost skipped a beat when I had a blurred vision of my hands. I immediately put the glasses on my eyes and then closed my eyes. “I saw a blurred image of my hands… I think… I… I”, I choked and at the same time, I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Have you closed your eyes?” the doctor asked me in a gentle voice. I nodded and then lowered my head again. “It’s not a problem if your vision was blurring at first. It means that we can have hope now”, he said in a cheery tone and I smiled. I felt tears in my eyes. “Don’t water your eyes”, I heard his warning tone and immediately nodded.

“Let’s wait for Mr Davenport to see the exact results”, the doctor said in a hopeful tone and I nodded. “Where is he now?” I asked Dexter. I knew that he was still in the room. “He will be here in a few minutes”, he said in a low voice, but I could feel that he was hesitant a bit. I smiled bitterly. “Tell him that I will put the bandage on my eyes again and will never put them off if he hasn’t come here today. If I said that I want to see him first then… keep my words”, I said in a cold but determined tone. I heard him sigh aloud. “Okay… I will convey your message to him”, he said in a defeated tone and I only nodded.

I lay down again and thought about the reason why he didn’t come when he promised me that he would come. I was sure that it was his scar that he didn’t want to come in front of me. I had already told him that I had no fear of how he looked. I knew that he was a bit anxious about his scar and I couldn't blame him for that. We humans always judge people by their faces. We only get a clear picture of what they are when we get betrayed by others. He was the one who saved me and stood beside me all this time. He was the reason that I was alive today and there was no way that I was going to see anyone except him. I will stay blind if I am not going to see him any soon.

“Why are you so stubborn?” I woke up when someone shook me from my shoulder. I was about to open my eyes but immediately shut off. I could feel that someone had removed the glasses from my eyes. “I am just like you”, I said in a sleepy voice but smile winningly. “Open your eyes, Mariam”, he said in a gentle tone. I immediately held his hands in my hands. “What are you doing?” he asked me in a curious tone. “I am afraid that you will run away”, I said in an anxious voice. “I will not run away”, he said in a gentle tone but I refused to let his hands go. “Okay”, he said in a defeated tone and I smiled again.

“Call the doctor and put those glasses on her eyes again. She is not going to leave my hands any time soon”, I grinned this time and raised my upper body from the bed. I felt the glasses back on my eyes again. “Thanks”, I said to Dexter. “Your other senses are really working well”, I heard his teasing tone this time and I stuck my tongue out at him. I heard him laughing softly. “You should have listened to the doctor, Mariam”, he scolded me in a soft tone. “You should have full filled your promise, Demitry”, I immediately replied back in the same tone. “What I am going to do with you?” he said in an annoying tone this time. “I know what you are going to do?” I said in a teasing tone and shrank my nose teasingly. “What?” he asked me and I leaned towards him. “You are going to kiss me back when I will kiss you”, I whispered in a bit seductive tone and felt a squeeze on my hands. I smirked because I got the effect that I wanted from him.

“Well… I guess we can complete the procedure now”, I heard the doctor’s cheery tone again. “Yes doctor”, I smiled widely this time. “Okay… remove the glasses and then slowly open your eyes”, he instructed me again and I nodded. I left his one hand only and then removed the glasses from my eyes. I was so nervous that I could feel some sweat on my forehead. “Open your eyes very slowly as you did before”, I heard the doctor’s voice again. I raised my hand and cupped his face. Now I knew where to see this time. I now knew that he was sitting in front of me. I slowly opened my eyes and blinked furiously again. My vision was blurred again. “Give time to your eyes to adjust with lights”, I heard the doctor’s voice again. “Everything is okay… you are doing good work”, I heard Demitry’s voice. I can see a blurred line of his body now. I blinked again. The light was clearly dim. “What did you see?” I heard the doctor’s voice this time. “My vision is still blurred but I can see the line of his head and face”, I said with a slightly happy tone. He was tall that I could say now.

I felt his hand get sweaty but I held it tightly this time. I blinked again and my vision had become a bit clear now. A smile went wide as I was now able to see his blurred face. “We are increasing the intensity of the lights now”, I heard the doctor’s voice again. I didn’t move my gaze from his face. Slowly the light went sharp and that was when I see his face clearly. “I can see you”, I shouted with happiness. His face was anxious and I could see the fear in his eyes but I didn’t mind them right now. I was so happy. I immediately let his hand go and cupped his face. He was just like what I imagined even better than what I had thought. “I can see you, Demitry… I can see you”, I cried in happiness this time and threw myself in his embrace while wrapping my hands around his neck. “Finally, I can see you”, I whispered again and closed my eyes so that tears won’t come out.
