Other than the smell, there was another thing that made dire wolves different from regular werewolves. Regular werewolves have inhuman strength, vision, smell, and hearing. Only alphas have special powers such as wielding elements, mind control, or even multiplying themselves. Dire wolves, on the other hand, did not caste themselves. Each of them was born as an alpha. Each of them has a special power.
That special power for Scarlett was her shapeshifting ability.
Funny, right?
She was already able to transform her human body into dire wolves. But as if the Moon Goddess had not enough jokes, she was given shapeshifting ability. Scarlett could mold her body into any shape of living creatures.
Now you must be wondering, does that mean Scarlett’s beauty was not natural, but instead it was a result of her shapeshifting ability?
Scarlett would give her broadest smile to whoever asks her that. Almost everyone would ask her when they found out about Scarlett’s ability. To them, she would say, “If you have the tools and gift to make yourself prettier, would you not do it?”
After all, is it not human nature to want to look their best at every given time? Women dressed in fancy dresses, heavy powder, and red-blood lipstick. While men train themselves to look more manly. Having beauty is a gift. Having the ability to beautify oneself is survival means. Living beings are always attracted to pretty things albeit the standard is different for everyone.
Scarlett would not be ashamed of shapeshifting herself to the image she wanted. The red wavy hair, emerald eyes, porcelain skin with a bit of a freckle on the face, and rouge lips. They were traits belonging to her mother that she once saw in a portrait. Scarlett remembered that she always had red hair and emerald eyes. But the other traits, even perhaps the charm her look gives off, were probably the result of her will to look like her deceased mother.
Honestly, Scarlett was not sure of herself either about her looks. Which was original and which was the result of her will bending the laws of nature. The line has blurred for her. And she did not want to waste meaningless time debating about it.
Only her sisters and Rob, the King of Tollyria who adopted her, that never even once asked her such questions. When Scarlett asked why, they all said, ‘No matter what you look like, we’d know you as Scarlett.’
Yes, no matter what I look like…
She was still Scarlett, The Enchantress, no matter what.
And that night, she was also The Rouge Assassin.
In a blink, she shapeshifted to a red gecko, climbing the outer walls of the inn. Scarlett did not know why, but every shape that she assumed would always have a red color. Maybe it was because of her red hair… but commonly, a werewolf power does not correlate to one’s hair.
It’s weird.
In her gecko form, Scarlett climbed the walls to the third floor. Then she began to circle the inn so she could arrive at the other side of the building. As a cold-blooded creature, the cold night did not bother her at all.
Soon, she found herself directly underneath Trey’s room window. She was just about to climb the window sill when suddenly the window was opened with such urgency. In a surprise, she shrieked as a gecko would. Luckily, her gecko instinct had made her able to attach herself to the edge of the windowpane with her sticky feet. She held on to the opened window pane with all her strength. Her tail flailed at the empty air below.
Son of a b***h! That scared me.
She did not dare to look at the man who had suddenly opened the window. A werewolf instinct is usually very sharp. She did not want to risk him knowing what she was, just from one look at her emerald eyes. So, she kept her gaze at the windowpane, still grabbing the wood with all her might, hoping that if she did fall the ground would be forgiving (as in soft) for her body.
Scarlett heard Trey sniffed the air again. This time, he sniffed it longer.
Seriously, am I that smelly today? I’ve bathed like two days ago!
“What the hell,” Trey muttered. Hearing his deep voice so close felt entirely different from hearing her from a story above. It felt …
Weird.
His voice awakened a vibration deep inside her bones. She thought it was the kernel of fire that had been buried deep inside her, finally coming back to life. Her anger and desire for revenge on the ones who had hurt her loved ones. To the ones who had led her life to spiral down.
She vowed she would be the end of that man. She was determined. Nothing would stop her from killing that sinner.
When Trey’s gaze was busy scanning the wretched town below, still trying to sniff out whatever smell he found, Scarlett quietly climbed inwardly inside the window. So that when finally Trey closed the window, Scarlett was already at the windowsill inside the room. Thankfully, her rouge color blended with the dark brown color of the windowsill. The darkness of the room also helped her conceal her presence.
Scarlett saw Trey shook his head, then he massaged his eyes and forehead. Finally, the man took off the weapons strapped all over his body. She almost whistled as she counted the number of daggers and knives the man brought. There were two on each of his boots, four on his body, two on the inside of his vest.
Her eyes twinkled at the sight of his daggers on the table.
Those were high-quality daggers.
He took off his tunic, revealing a ripped body full of muscles. Most werewolves have a better chance of growing their muscles. But his? His was huge.
Scarlett gulped as a gecko would, which was pretty much the same as a human would.
I have to do it fast then. This man would be able to overpower me in a heartbeat if I hesitate.
He put his tunic on the chair and he started to loosen his belt.
Ah, I forgot that most werewolves enjoy sleeping naked.
Werewolves have the highest body temperature compared to other beings. It's easier for them to feel hot and sweat. Perhaps that is why werewolves also smell more… and why Scarlett would withstand winter with minimum clothing.
Although with her shapeshifting ability, she was able to change her core temperature to any creature she desired with a note that she has to know the creature in the first place. That was why Scarlett always loved spending her time in nature. She liked to gain knowledge about animals and anthropology, a study about societies and behaviors. That was why she enjoyed and excelled in interacting with others.
That was her charm.
Trey must have found the weather in the City of Corpses as hard. It was hot but highly humid. It was a nightmare for any werewolves. The first time Scarlett came to the city, she too, found it hard to cope with the overwhelming stench and noise.
PLOPPP
His pants just fell to the floor. In front of Scarlett, she had to admit, was a nice pair of ass.
Damn, why does the villain is always hot?
Trey folded the pants on the chair as well, then finally he blew the candle out. The room darkened in an instant. But Scarlett, with her gecko night vision, was still able to see. She knew Trey, with his high vision would still be able to see. He took one dagger from the table and climbed the bed.
Now, patience is a virtue.
Scarlett would wait. And she was patient despite the raging fire burning inside her then.
She vowed, his death would be sweet. And the best thing only comes to those who wait.
