There is an old magic with the ability to transport someone from the Elvan world (A place where only elves existed) to the realm of human beings. The magic has catastrophic effects on those who use them which was why children who were suspected of having or possessing the old magic were warned repetedly not to utter the words or even try to learn them. But how was Ruby to know that the words would send her to the human realm. She was never told that something like the 'human realm' existed and so when she uttered the words while in grave danger, she found herself in a strange place filled with people that did not look like her or understood her language although the difference was almost insignificant and unoticeable. She would come to know that they were human beings and she was in their world.

She sort of twisted her memory as the magic took its hold on her and sent her to the human realm. Now she cannot remember that someone was trying to kill her, that her best friend was probably dead or better still, that she left her best friend for dead and now here she was, having found a creepy old man who was an elf like her in the human realm but who was refusing to admit it. The events that followed after she met him would see her regain all her memories and find her way back home just in the nick of time to save her parents' life.

PROLOGUE
What happens when an elf princess disappears, barely escapes death, takes on human form and twists her memory in the process – she did not lose her memory completely but she did forget a lot of things. No one counted on the events that followed. Shalit was on her way out when the unmistakable sound that someone just budged into the house registered in her ears.  “What now?” she said tiredly as she walked to meet her friend. “Wow! Check this out, the shy one is finally going on a date.” Ruby remarked upon seeing Shalit’s dress which exposed her entire shoulder and a little of her chest area. “It’s not a date, I wasn’t even...” “Save It” Ruby cut her short but she sighed and continued. “So I believe this is the point where you tell me why you blasted your way into the house” Shalit told her. Ruby shrugged her shoulder in a manner that suggested that whatever she was going to say was not her fault. “Well, you see... some people were after me and I believe they meant to kill me.” “What!” Shalit responded more to the casual nature with which her friend just told her that people were trying to kill her rather than the fact that people were actually trying to kill her friend. “Why? Who are they and what have you done?” “Relax. I said they WERE after me.” The concerned look on shalit’s face turned into that of a mother about to scold he little daughter. “You killed them didn’t you?” “Come on, don’t be like that. It was either me or them and I choose me. You have nothing to worry about, I have taken care of everything.” Ruby was trying to comfort her friend who seemed grieved at the people she had killed. “How long do you think you can keep this up before you are arrested and tried and then hanged?” Shalit asked her friend who by then had her mouth fiulled with bread. What she did not know was that her dear friend – Ruby was already under arrest and had just dragged her into the mess that was only seconds away from exploding. “Listen,” Rubby started to say quite unclearly because her mouth was still filled with the large chunk of bread she had bitten when their attention was captured by the terrifying voice of Wade. He was the commander of the king’s army. “Search the house and bring her out dead or alive.” Ruby was not sure if the voice was referring to her but considering what she just did, she had every reason to assume it was. Back inside the house, Shalit was already breathing heavily. ‘dead or alive’ was parading all around her head. “We have to run.” Ruby said turning away from the door to Shalit who responded. “To where and how? They already have the house surrounded.” They were watching the people who had come to arrest Ruby through the window and it was definitely Wade in his full commander’s attire and he looked really angry. Assuming the circumstances were to be different, Ruby might have noticed something different about this Wade but she did not, all she was concerned about now was getting her friend to safety. He stood arms akimbo and watched intently as his soldiers aimed their crossbows with fire barbed arrows at the house as if they were waiting for his orders to burn it to the ground. Ruby was confused as well as Shalit as they both looked at Wade. If they were indeed looking for her (Ruby), then it makes no sense at all. Her father, the king would never send soldiers to arrest her or even look for her in the manner that these soldiers were going at it, however, she tried to keep her mind focused on getting out of the situation which would have been a piece of cake for her ordinarily but Shalit complicated matters for she (Shalit) had no magic unlike her friend Ruby – the troublesome princess who had extraordinary magical abilities and could do whatever she wanted. The two girls were made to understand that things were about to get real when an arrow barbed with fire, whether by luck or expertise, came clean through a window in the house and shattered the mirror. Their screams of terror – mostly from Shalit, gave the soldiers the push to continue as well as their exact location in the house and as if on cue, more arrows blasted their way into the house and within few seconds, the whole house was lit and sounds of cracking woods was all over the house. “Follow me.” Shalit shouted at Ruby in the confusion of the moment. She led her through a narrow path in the house as the fire gave a slow but steady chase until they arrived at a strange triangular door positioned on the ground. Shalit found the key and opened it. “Where does this door lead to?” Ruby asked her as they got ready to jump into the dark world below them. “Away from here,” Shalit responded with much anxiety and jumped in. She was quite accustomed to jumping into the hole but Ruby was not and without any warning or heads up regarding the depth of the hole, she jumped in just as a big plank dropped and covered the entrance of the hole in place of the triangular door that was previously there. She sprained her ankle and remained on the ground screaming in severe pain. It was not just the fact that she had just sprained her ankle that was causing her pain, it was actually her father’s soldiers that are now trying to kill her and her friend. ‘what is going on?’ she asked herself inwardly. “We have to go now.” Shalit told her and helped her up and they walked as fast as Ruby’s sprained ankle would permit them. Outside the house, the man they thought was Wade was charging the soldiers, telling them to make absolute certain that Ruby does not escape. His name is Lightning and his magical abilities allow him to transform into or assume whatever form of anything he sees. He has grown weary of the king’s attitude towards his daughter’s misuse of her powers as it was soon to result in a full blown war with other kings in his reckoning and seeing that he wanted... to be in one piece when he executed his plans and took over power, he took matters into his hands and now there he was trying to eliminate the greatest threat to his plan who has indeed proven him right having killed so many of the men he planned to attack the king with. By the time they got out of the tunnel, the house was all but burnt. They were now standing in front of a cliff and fortunately for them, no voice was heard behind them, an indication that perhaps they were safe. The brief moment of tranquillity allowed them some time and instead of thinking for a way to get back to the palace, they decided to chat. “Ruby what is going on?” Shalit asked her. “I am not entirely certain but I think somehow, Wade now has complete control over my father’s soldiers.” “What makes you say that?” “I don’t know but there is something about how he spoke and all. My instincts were suggesting terrible things to me, Oh God! I hope my parents are okay.” “I am sure they are.” Shalit taped her shoulder and it was as if the impact reached down to Ruby’s ankle, she let out a weak cry and bent down to attend to it. While she was still at it, she said. “I am sorry about your house.” “Nah... it was going to collapse on its own anyways, so what now?” “I have to find my way back to the palace and check on my parents.” Shalit started to say something but the arrow that struck her in the neck prevented it. She fell to the ground and was motionless. Ruby looked at her in shock but could not confirm the degree of the injury the arrow had caused her friend who now lay on the ground before her. It would seem that they were lost in their conversation and did not hear the soldiers approaching. “Let me save you the trouble.” Lightning called out to Ruby who still thought it was Wade with his coax voice. “Your father is dead, I killed him myself and your mother too and now I am going to send you to join them you little scum.” And that was it, She picked up a play in the whole episode but had little time to dig further. She could not figure out the hatred she saw in his face but as she jumped off the cliff having concluded that Shalit was dead, she recited a magical spell everyone kept warning her not to recite...
