She fell to the ground her face buried in her hands while she cried her eyes out, at this point she didn't know if it was because of her mother or because all she had worked hard for had just come to an end.
it took several minutes for Doctor Williams to coax her into following him to a room were she could grieve quietly.
she finally lifted her head after what seems like hours and took a glance at her watch, she gasped when she realize that a lot of time had passed, according to her time it was now ten pm. the doctor had told her that her mother was alone in the accident which means he was still with Mrs. Jackson his caretaker.
'Miss Robert" the doctor said interrupting her thoughts
"sorry Doctor, i need to find my baby brother" she answered still a bit shaken up ' i will be by tomorrow to sign the paperwork for the body to be released.
with that she turned around and walked out of the building making her way to her car.
a few minutes later she pulled up to the apartment building where Mrs Jackson lived and touched the buzzer.
"Jackson residency" said the voice on the intercom
"Mrs. Jackson its me Alexis Roberts" said Alexis
"Alexis dear, where is your mother" asked the old lady buzzing her up.
Alexis made her way up to the second floor where her brother's caretaker lived, Mrs. Jackson was already outside waiting for her.
Alexis knew the old lady since she was twelve, Mrs. Jackson took care of her when her mother had to take up two jobs to support her brother and her.
"Mrs. Roberts" cried Alexis "my mother is dead"
"oh honey what non-sense are you spouting" she asked
"My mother is dead" repeated Alexis
for the second time in a day Alexis found herself crying, only this time she was sure that her tears belonged to her mother.
"Dear Lord, how did it happened" asked the old lady finally realizing that she was serious.
"i received a call from Clanahang Raleigh Hospital, they said she was in a car crash, i didn't get enough info cause i needed to find Ben" she explained
"oh Honey, you should have called" said the old lady " little Ben is asleep i wouldn't mind taking care of him longer.
" in fact take your time i will take care of Ben for a few days to allow you to prepare everything for your mom's funeral" she offered
"thank you Mrs. Jackson, i would accept your help" she replied
she gave the old lady a hug and left.
the following days were like hell for Alexis, she had to look for a funeral home, visit the insurance office and make decisions about what she would do with her brother and with her mothers house.
her mother always talked about moving to Canmore Canada so she decided to looked into properties and schools and even a job, since she had to give up on her dreams she decided to at least follow her mothers.
after a few hours of searching she found a decent two bedroom house near a school she thought was perfect for her brother, she immediately contacted the owner and made all arrangements for purchasing, during the past days following her mothers funeral she had found out her mother had taken out a quarter million life insurance to assure her brother and her were taken care of if anything happened leaving her as the sole beneficiary and that was not including the pension they would receive.
she decided on paying off part of her student loan and using the rest to buy the house pay for her brothers school tuition and save the rest for living expenses after all she had her little brother to care for, it was not only her anymore.
her phone rang startling her, it was her friend Debbie.
"hello, hey Debbie" she answered
"don't hey Debbie me, we have been worried sick about you Alex what the hell happened to you" she yelled
"i am sorry Debbie, i had to leave it was an emergency" she replied "my mother is dead"
there was nothing but silence on the other end followed by a quick we are on our way and then nothing.
she sighed, she knew not calling her friends was wrong but she really couldn't deal with anymore crying.
four hours later she heard knocking on her door, Debbie was the first to enter followed by Daniel and Lenny.
"Oh hun" said Debbie hugging her friend, "you should have called us earlier"
"it was all too sudden, i am sorry i didn't call y'all" she said
"don't worry" said Lenny "we understand"
"so what are you going to do" asked Alexis "what is going to happen to your brother"
"well iv'e decided to move to Canada" she said "i found a good school for my brother and"
"what"
she was cut off by Debbie's scream
"did you just say Canada" exclaimed Debbie
"oh, yeah" she whispered "i need to care for my brother, i am all he has left and it was my mothers dream to someday live in Canada so i am putting a hold on my dreams for now.
Debbie looked at her friends sadness in her eyes, she knew how hard Alexis had work to accomplish all she had up until now, to give it all up in one day, her only choice was to support her friend decisions.
she hugged her friend "we are with you no matter what" she said
after a few hours of chatting and laughing her friends finally said their goodbyes and left.
