Then
Then I scampered through the forest struggling, trying to carry all the bags. I know I had brought too much, but I didn't want to do something wrong, I wanted to get this right. Darius had asked me for help. I was helping the enforcers. I wished I was old enough to be an enforcer right now. I was just a useless, annoying prepubescent teen, but damn, I wanted to be with them. They were my idols. I ran a little faster, struggling to keep the medical kit in my arms . Why did they need the medical supplies? None of my brothers would need a medical kit. I struggled through the dense foliage, stumbling a little as I reached the dark road. I lifted my nose to the air, swinging my head from side to side and caught a vague whiff of my brothers and the beautiful scent of the night air hit me. Gosebumps erupted all over my skin. i trotted in the direction of my brothers, feeling a great swelling of pride at being asked to help, "Hey." Pete rounded the corner and ushered me forward. 'Good you got the kits'. I nodded, glad he put an arm around me rather than ushering me back home. As he walked me around the corner, a scent of blood hit me. I hadn't transitioned yet. I was only 8. It would be many years yet but my nose was still sensitive enough. I saw a two car crash. 3 of our enforcers were prowling around in the darkness. The bodies of 2 rogues lay dead on the ground. I lifted my eyes to the sky as I felt a light misty rain begin to fall. 'over here.' Pete said abruptly. I jumped, cursing myself as i hadn't noticed them. Enforcers needed to be aware of everything. i padded over and saw the body of a middle-aged man on the floor, and next to them was a group a woman with a babe, an elderly woman they were human. I turned to Pete. 'fuck.' 'pretty much.' Pete said gently as he walked over to the body of the man holding out his hand for the med kit which i hurriedly pulled from my shoulder and crouched down next to him. My eyes roved his body quickly taking on the multitude of his injuries. I reached out and pressed my fingertips to his neck, checking for a pulse which i did not find. i looked up at Pete and shook my head. My eyes shifted as a small figure who had appeared opposite me, I looked over and found myself gasping. She was young, looking maybe a year or two younger than me, she was crouched down looking at the man on the ground gently holding her hand in hers, her long honey blond hair hung down around her face , her skin was pale and her delicate features on her heart-shaped face. "They killed him," she whispered, her voice was sad but to me it sounded like a bell. She looked up and our eyes locked. Her eyes were bright green, and I couldn't stop myself smiling just a little. She smiled back a small sad smile. "I'm sorry" i said. It was my clumsy attempt to hear her voice again. Something didn't feel right. There was a strange restless sensation inside me I didn't understand. It was something I had never felt before. I was still looking at the girl. She was so pretty it was actually making me nervous. I had a crazy urge to hold her hand. I looked down and saw my hands were spattered with blood, her father's blood. i began rubbing my hands on my jeans discretely. 'Sarah.' the elderly woman said sharply, appearing at her side and putting an arm around her, she began leading her away. Sarah, I smiled inside at the sound of her name. She was led over to her family group but her eyes kept straying to me, her gaze looked curious. "hey wake up." Pete said slapping me gently on the cheek, "sorry." "Look leave the med kits. OK Darius is going to sort this. Look you go in the car, get everything prepped. These guys will stay with us. They are going to be in the... house ." 'really?' 'don't have much of a choice, mate, we need to keep them safe until we are sure its done, we have to clean up this f*****g place before the police get involved.' I looked at the girl. She was being held tightly by the elderly woman who was glaring daggers at me. I wondered if I could go over and speak to her. I had no idea what I could say though. What the f**k could I say? 'Dean Dean', Pete said, clicking his fingers in front of my face , 'What?' I said blankly. Pete followed my gaze and smiled indulgently, 'Nothing there but trouble .' he said calmly, 'any part of you that touches her, I suspect her grandma will snap off.' 'I'm not... I mean...I um....' Pete smiled again, 'Look mate, I'm going to do you a favour. Get in the bloody car.' I nodded. Pete was my superior. We both knew i would have to do what he told me to, but my eyes still seemed reluctant to leave Sarah's face. 'Dean.' my mother said, snapping me from my daydream, 'mmm.' I said, my head snapping up off my arm. She laughed. 'What's up with you? You've been in a dreamland since you got back.' 'No I'm fine.' i said defensively, taking a swig of my hot chocolate that i realised far too late was stone cold. My mum turned her back to hide her smile, I walked over to the sink to tip my cold drink out and looked out across the dark night. 'Do you think they are OK?' 'the family?' she said gently, coming up alongside me. I nodded, my eyes locked on the distant house they were staying in. she sighed ' probably not the situation is complex, but we will do everything we can.' 'We tried, didn't we? I mean I can't shift yet, so I just carried the bags and you had to shift and.' 'Dean.' she said grasping my shoulders and turning me to face to her concern painted across her beautiful delicate features, ' they can't judge you. It's not your job to protect us from rogues, and me shifting, Dean. I'm your f*****g mother. Anybody wants to hurt my babies, I will rip them apart. Shiftter or not, don't care how big you get, I will always stand up. They will always have to defeat me first if they want to hurt my child.' She wrapped an arm around me, pulling me into a hug that I for once accepted. I needed his comfort as i felt weak and it was something I hadn't felt before It was irrational as i was only 8 and shifts never started at 8. It was more like 15 but right now I hated it. I felt vulnerable , weak and it was something I wasn't used to feeling i didn't like it. 'can i go check if they are OK?' my mum smiled, 'they are being looked after. You know that. ' 'I know.' she smiled knowingly ' if you want to go , you go.'I didn't need telling twice l all but ran to the door and in seconds was outside sprinting across the grass to the guesthouse. i stopped in the pool of light on the porch and knocked on the door lightly , Darius opened the door and frowned down at me looking confused. 'Dean?' he said, rubbing his forehead, looking tired is everything OK? I nodded. 'I...I was just .' I didn't have a clue how to finish that sentence, Darius however just nodded and moved away from the door. We weren't exactly big WORD people. He gestured to come in with a jerk of his head. The living room was empty and dimly lit by two table lamps and a large open fire that gave the living room a warm, comforting glow. I sat on one of the sofas and Darius sat down opposite me. 'sorry ...'I said feeling slightly stupid now that i was here, but strangely, I actually, despite feeling stupid, I was actually feeling better being here. ' I...just....I wanted to make sure they were OK... I um....I was just worried about....' Darius nodded his face calm as if he understood a lot more than I had told him, 'i...are they OK?' I asked, picking up a pillow and cuddling into it. ' They are all fine' Darius said calmly, ' well as fine as they can be. We are just guarding them until the morning. Then we will meet with the police and sort out the official explanation. And then they will be OK to head on home.' I nodded but something in my tummy twisted at that sentence. 'whats wrong Dean?' i shrugged, 'I just... I feel I don't feel right .' It's not uncommon they were a pretty bad bunch of rogues. I'm sorry I didn't consider that this would have been the first time you would have seen a body.' I blinked it was the first time I had seen a dead body and i hadn't even realised that. 'It's not that.' i said honestly 'I just... I cant ...I'm not strong enough.' 'Oh.' Darius said calmly, that was all he said, but I knew that there was a lot more going on in his head, ' I had a similar conversation with Derek about 4 years ago.' 'four years .' I whispered. I knew Darius was saying something that I couldn't understand. 'Can I ...could I just stay here for a while.' i didn't know why i was asking this . 'I don't know why but i feel better here,' Darius didn't look confused in contrast. He relaxed and reached for his paperwork that he had left on the coffee table. ' sure .' he said calmly, 'you can sleep in the snug upstairs.' I nodded, Darius reached for his glasses, effectively dismissing me. i didn't say anything more. I was feeling rather ashamed of myself, but I did feel better. calm now, so I just quietly walked upstairs and sat down on the sofa tucked away at the end of the hall, there was a warm throw which i threw over myself. i lay down not intending to sleep but i felt the knots in my stomach loosen as i lay there just breathing in the calming scents of the house around me and soon found sleep encroaching irresistibly on me. Norma i awoke in the darkness that was just seconds before dawn, cursing myself for allowing exhaustion to overwhelm me.I knew we had to come here we needed to just be compliant much as i didnt want to. Elsa was in the second bedroom on her own. She needed to rest, so I had taken the second bedroom with the children. I lay still for a few seconds trying to figure out what was wrong. I could hear the baby snuffling quietly across the room, Elsa could be heard crying softly through the walls. I sat bolt upright when I realised what was wrong, Sarah. Sarah wasn't in the room. I jumped up and pulled my cardigan on roughly and stomped out of the room to look for her . The sound of snoring instantly led me down the corridor and there she was . She was curled up on a sofa fast asleep in the arms of the young boy who had come stumbling along with arms full of medical kits he clearly had no clue about using. She shifted slightly and he tightened his arms a little. An innocent, honestly content smile was on his face. Sarah had lost her father and she had woken up and looking for comfort, she had found it in the arms of this young wolf. Darius walked up to my side in that silent way shifters had. 'they found each other." he said gently looking down on the sleeping couple. 'I don't care she is not one of you.' I said firmly, 'he;s too let her go,' 'I know how you feel Norma, but if they are mates,' I turned and gave him a sharp glare, 'They are children. She is a child.' 'He can help her, being close to her mate will help her.' 'She will be fine. We are her family. We will help her.' 'he.' 'He will forget her, she will forget him.' 'Mates don't work like that, Norma.' 'She is not one of you, she will forget.' I looked down at the sleeping children. Back in the bedroom, the baby started crying , 'You take care of him, I will look after her.' I turned and headed back to the baby.
