CHAPTER ELEVEN
As hard as she tried, Chloe could not get the image of Danielle’s sinister little smile out of her mind. Something about it gnawed at her, an itch she could not scratch. She wrestled with it on Sunday and it occupied her mind while she and Steven sat around the house, avoiding one another. She could tell Steven was starting to feel ashamed of his actions at the block party but was not quite ready to own his part of it.
Still stumped by why Danielle’s nearly passive smile continued to bother her, Chloe started to become aware that there was something there—something that smile seemed to be dragging up from the past.
