“There are seven minutes left, if you are smart enough you will be able to get a mentor”, the young Alpha advised Lola deftly.
He quietly observed Airen's reaction to this decision. Was he going to stay still, or would he put up an objection about his decision?
“If you accept me, you have to accept my sister too. She's the only reason why I'm here in the first place. I'm not becoming your mentee without her”, Airen bellowed, countering the young Alpha's decision.
He and Lola were inseparable. She was the only reason he was alive after they had lost their mother and brother, which was why he wouldn't want to spend a second away from her side.
“[And he is feisty too]”.
Sage commented, but Ariel asked him to shut it.
“What?”, The young Alpha was slightly shocked by his words. Although he had been expecting him to protest against his decision, he hadn't expected it to be in such a rude way. Anyone would kill for him to be their mentor, but here was this witty spoiled brat giving him a condition?
“Come on Lola, let's go, I told you all this wasn't worth it”, Airen complained and began to drag Lola away by her hand.
“Airen, you are being irrational”, Lola pulled her hand out of his hold and halted.
“Is there no way you can accept both of us?”, Lola asked, glancing up at Ariel with the hope of him giving them a solution.
“Even if I wanted you both as mentees, I'm not allowed to because there can't be siblings under the same mentor, besides I'm only allowed to mentor one contestant, but I can do something about it”, Alpha Ariel checked his time to see what time they had left before he continued.
“You have five minutes left. The only way I can help is to direct you to another mentor, and before you say anything, he is my best friend and my Beta, so she is safe with him. He only takes one mentee, but with my orders, he can make room for another”, Alpha Ariel said, and took out his phone and sent a text to his Beta, Omri, informing him of the situation before giving the directions to Lola.
Airen wasn't pleased with the idea of letting his sister have another mentor, but Lola convinced him it was the best option or else she would be left with no mentor and be kicked out of the competition.
She kissed him on his cheek and asked him to wish her good luck as she set out to search for her very own mentor.
Airen and the young alpha waited patiently for Omri's text, as there were thirty seconds left for the first task to be over. Airen kept checking his time as he bit his fingers, walking all over the room, afraid that she wouldn't be able to make it as the time left wasn't much.
Beep!, Ariel's phone beeped.
Airen stopped and turned his attention to the Alpha, waiting for what he had to say.
“What is it? What did he say? Answer me?”, Airen questioned, covering the distance between them.
“It seems luck is on both of your sides, she got to him on time, she is his mentee now”, Alpha Ariel notified him. Airen let out a sigh of relief and took a seat.
“[He is still in his human form, he may have shifted or not, but he possesses such remarkable talent]”.
Sage shared with Ariel.
“[Which is why I decided to take him as my mentee, I need to know more about him]”, Ariel responded to sage.
“Get up, we need to meet the others at the task hall”, Airel said icily to his new mentee, who was sitting down with his eyes shut.
Ariel took the lead and made his way to the task hall, and Airen followed right behind him. They arrived in the hall shortly after, where the other mentors and their mentees were waiting. You could hear the mumbling of the mentees as they surveyed the hall to see who was selected and who wasn't.
Their mumbling immediately stopped as their expressions were met with ultimate shock when they saw Ariel walking side by side with Airen into the hall. They couldn't believe it, as it was well perceived that no mentee had been able to discover Ariel's location and have him as a mentor.
So, how did Airen do it? These were the questions running through their minds as they all focused their gaze on both of them.
“I told you, he was his mentor, but you were doubting my words”, Lola said proudly to Decker, who had his mouth wide open at the scene in front of him.
“If you don't have a mentor, move to my left”, Ariel announced with a stern gaze.
There were a hundred and two that had come for the conquest, but only twenty-one out of the hundred and two werewolves were able to get mentors.
This year's conquest had the lowest number of participants in all the history of the conquest.
“Congratulations to those who were able to be picked by a mentor”, Ariel cheered them.
They all started cheering themselves up and congratulating one another. It was a joyous moment, well, for as long as it lasted, as Alpha Ariel already had another game up his sleeves. He cut short their celebrations, giving them the terror of their short existence.
“Silence”, Ariel growled, fetching the attention of everyone in the hall.
“This is not the time to congratulate yourselves. You haven't earned a space permanently in my arena dorm”, Ariel informed, leaving all the werewolves who were picked confused, wondering what he meant by that.
“What does he mean?”, The werewolves who were picked murmured among themselves.
“You only earned a week's stay at the arena dormitory. You will be back here in six days to compete against those who weren't picked”, Ariel revealed, leaving every one of the participants disoriented, both those that had been picked and those who hadn't.
Airen gave him a suspicious glance as he attempted to guess what was running through the young Alpha's head because Decker hadn't mentioned such a twist in the conquest, so what had changed?
“This will go on for a month. Those who are strong enough to earn themselves a spot will move on to the next round”. Alpha Ariel ended with this, not explaining further, and left their presence with the other Alphas, Betas, and Gammas following behind him.
“What about us? Where are we going to sleep?”, A werewolf asked on behalf of those who didn't have mentors, but his question was ignored. No one responded to him.
“What are we going to do?”, they mumbled among themselves, uncertain of their future.
“What's going on, Airen?”, Lola walked up to him, hoping he would have some explanation as to why they had changed the rules of the game, since his mentor was the one who made the modifications to the conquest.
“I don't know what's going on Lo, I am as confused as you”, Airen responded.
“What do you mean by saying you don't know? He is your mentor for crying out loud. You are supposed to know what he is thinking even before he thinks about it”, Lola countered Airen's answer.
She suddenly got angry at how nonchalant Airen was acting. He knew how important it was for them to stay at the Arena dormitory, yet here he was acting as if he didn't give a single fxck about what was going on in the conquest.
“Lola, why are you getting mad at me? I just met my mentor today, how am I supposed to know what he is thinking? It's not like I have some sort of special ability. I am no clairvoyant”, Airen snarled and walked out on her with no particular directions in mind, all he wanted was to get out of there as it appeared like he was being choked.
“Let him be, Lola”, Decker, stopped her from chasing after him.
“But he doesn't know…”, Decker shushed her and assured her that he was going to be fine, and no harm would come to him.
“Selected this way and non-selected that way”, a fierce-looking lady said.
She was directing them to pick up the bags that were filled with essential needs assigned to them. The selected ones were given bags with various colors that identified who their mentor was.
Everyone picked up their bag with one left as its owner hadn't claimed it. It was different from the others. It had three colors on it: silver, white and black.
“Where is Alpha Ariel's mentee?”, the fierce lady questioned.
“He got scared and ran away”, Zeke jokingly said, which got everyone laughing.
“Silence!”, the fierce lady yelled.
“Do you dare joke with me?”, She questioned and in a blink of an eye, she was in front of Zeke.
She grabbed him by his shoulder and snatched him off the ground, holding him by his throat with her other hand.
“Let go of him, Zara”, Alpha Ariel commanded as he walked in.
“Count your lucky stars that the Alpha came to your liberation”, Zara growled at Zeke before letting go of him, making him land on his ass on the ground.
“Who is she?”, Lola whispered into Decker's ear.
“She is…”, Decker couldn't complete his statement as Alpha Ariel started speaking.
“This is Gamma Zara, she is your dorm mistress. I would be careful around her if I were any of you”, Alpha Ariel informed them.
Well, there was no need for that, as they had all witnessed how Zara handled Zeke's disrespect towards her.
“Halfie, tell your brother to see me in my private chambers whenever he decides to come back from his walk”, Alpha Ariel said to Lola.
“[There is no need for that, he is here]”, Sage, Ariel's wolf, said to him.
“You, follow me”, Alpha Ariel said. Immediately he turned around, throwing the bag at Airen, who caught it swiftly.
“Hmm, nice reflexes”, Ariel commented.
Airen followed Ariel out of the room and down a hallway that was lit with golden lights that illuminated the hallway and created beautiful, lofty shadows.
The hallway was quite long and wide, something that Airen had not expected from the size of the mansion when they had first come in.
They stopped walking when they reached the end of the hallway.
A large door stood in their path. It was also a dark-colored color like the rest of the hallway.
It looked overly secure, like something that belonged in a bank's vault and not the door to someone's room. It made Airen uncomfortable.
“You are to sleep here”, Ariel pointed at the room to him.
“Why? Shouldn't I be with the others?”, Airen questioned, confused.
He thought he was going to be staying with the others in the dormitory. He wasn't aware that he was going to stay with his mentor.
“No mentee of mine will sleep in the dormitory. You should have known these rules before coming”, Ariel stated.
He raised his head and glanced up at Airen, wary of his intentions towards the conquest. It was no secret that his mentee was to share the same cabin with him.
“It's been more than three years since you became a mentor and yet never had mentees. So, it slipped my mind that I was supposed to share your cabin with you”, Airen quickly came up with an explanation in order not to get caught by his mentor.
“What is your name?”, Ariel asked further. He wanted to know more about him, as he had begun to be suspicious of him.
“Fxck, should I say Airen or?”, Airen said under his breath. He and Lola had not discussed whether to go by their real names or not.
What was he supposed to say? Should he give his real name? What if he were one of those who wanted him dead? There was no way he was going to give out his real name to a total stranger.
He feared being caught without finding the truth, so he did what anyone would do in his shoes; lie.
“My name is Matthew Smith, I came from very far away just to partake in this conquest”, Airen lied through his teeth, without flickering an eyelid.
“[He is lying]”, Sage, Ariel's wolf mind linked to him.
“[I know, he just lied without blinking his eyes. He is up to no good]”, Ariel responded with a smirk on his face.
“Nice to meet you, Mathew Smith, but I would rather call you Airen”, Ariel replied coolly.
Airen gasped immediately, wrapping his mouth with his hands.
How did he know his real name?
Who exactly was he? These thoughts ran through his mind as he studied Ariel strangely.
