“You do know mama is going to give you an earful for forgetting your wallet yet again despite her constant nagging about it”, Lola said to Airen, who was trying to sneak in through the back door unnoticed. He had known that she was going to nag him for being forgetful even after all of her warnings.
“Shush”, Airen placed his hands on his sister's lips, to stop her from talking, but she immediately brushed it off.
“Don't shush me Arien, I'm older than you”, she rolled her eyes at him as they entered through the back leading to the kitchen.
Airen scanned around the kitchen to see if he left it there or in his room.
He smiled the moment he spotted his wallet lying on the microwave, he peeked behind him and then checked beside him to see if his mother was in sight before going to get his wallet. He took his first step and then stopped. He noticed a broken vase on the floor and its fragments were shattered all over the place. He sniffed his nose and smelt fresh blood.
“Lo, something doesn't feel right, why is that flower vase broken and do you also smell fresh blood?”, Airen asked tentatively.
Hoping it was just his imagination, but something was definitely wrong. The atmosphere around him felt dark and sad at the same time.
“I will go take a look upstairs”, Lola volunteered and ran upstairs.
Airen decided to take a look around to see if he could find out why the vase was broken on the floor.
He walked carefully, avoiding the fragments of the vase scattered all over.
Blood?
'Why was there blood on the floor?' He questioned as he walked closer to the main entrance of their home.
He bent down and picked up a fragment of the vase which had blood on it. He stared at it carefully, something in him made him sniff the broken piece.
“Mama?”, he called out, throwing the piece on the floor and stood up abruptly.
“Airen!!”, Lola screamed at the top of her voice.
Airen rushed upstairs, calling out Lola's name frantically, asking what the problem was. He followed the sound of her voice to their mother's room and saw her on the floor, with their mother in her arms, bleeding out.
Airen paused at the door, he couldn't move, it was like his legs were weighing him down, and he couldn't take a step forward. He blinked his eyes thrice and wiped them furiously as he thought that maybe he was dreaming and whatever that was in front of him was just his imagination and nothing more.
“Airen, please do something, mama is dying”, Lola cried out.
Hearing those words made him realize that it wasn't his imagination, nor was he dreaming. He finally ran down to his sister's side and wedged his mother with his right hand as he tried to pull out his phone to call 911, but his mother stopped him and asked him to move closer to her.
"Mama, you need to go to the hospital, why are you stopping me?”, Airen questioned as he began to sob.
“They can't help me, Airen. This is more than modern medicine could possibly handle”, his mother finally found the strength to speak, after much effort.
“Mama, what are you saying? Who did this to you? What happened here? Where is Matthew?”, Arien asked, even with all the confusion running through his head, he needed to know why she was in that condition.
“I need you to go to this place, they will help you and give you the answers you want”, Mildred slipped a piece of paper into his arms. The paper was stained with her blood, she raised her hand and placed it on his face while sporting a teary smile on her face.
“Lola will help you. I'm sorry my precious baby, I couldn't protect you until the end. I'm sorry I'm leaving you alone in this evil world. Always remember I love you, okay? And whatever you do, don't hate Luna Eleanor, she did everything in her power to protect you, hmm?”, Mildred was speaking slowly and yet hurriedly.
“Mama, I don't understand, what are you saying? You are saying gibberish. Who is Luna Eleanor? That isn't important, we need to get you to the hospital for Pete's sake. Lo call 911”, Airen yelled as he cried. He held her hand that she had placed on his face and assured her that she was going to survive, he wasn't going to let her die.
“I can die now in peace”, she whispered as she lifted Lola's hand and placed it in Airen's. She made her vow that she was always going to be by his side and help him achieve all he was supposed to achieve.
“He is in your care now, Lo, please don't leave him alone, do all you can to protect him, he…he…”, Airen cuts her off immediately.
“Mama, stop talking, you are straining yourself”, Airen cried out.
“I love you both, always remember that, those were Mama's last words”.
She finally gave in, she died with her eyes wide open, letting out a final tear which trailed down her cheek.
“Mama, mama, mama”, Airen started shaking her vehemently, waiting for her to respond to him, but she didn't.
He turned over to Lola and asked her why their mother wasn't breathing. He refused to believe that she was dead.
Lola already knew she was gone. She sniffed her nose and wiped off her tears as she stood up. She walked up to their mother's closet and divided her clothes into two from the rack. A small wooden box was locked there. She pulled out her keychain and opened the box to collect the contents in it. It contained some cash which was up to twenty thousand dollars, her and Airen's passports and a diary.
“What are you doing, Lo? We need to call the police”, Airen wailed.
“We can't call the police, Airen. We will only be putting ourselves in more trouble, and don't worry about mama's body, there are people who will come and take care of it. Right now, we need to leave here before the people who did this to mama come back”, Lola said.
She put the cash, the passport, and the diary into her school bag and asked Airen to get up, so they could leave.
Airen refused, he insisted that he was going to stay behind with their mother's body. He wasn't going to leave her like that. He lay beside her and wrapped his arms around her. Lola walked up to him and picked him up, she gave him a hot slap that rocked him back to his senses. Right now, Airen wasn't thinking with his head but with his heart and that alone was going to get them killed.
“I won't allow mama's death to be in vain, Airen, so you better get your ass up and let's leave this place at this very moment”, she said firmly.
Airen stood up and did as his sister said. He followed behind her and they both ran down the stairs.
Lola rushed over and carried Airen's wallet from the kitchen before they rushed outside. Airen was about to enter his car, but Lola stopped him from entering. She said they had another ride. She opened their garage, and opened what used to be a door in the garage. Inside was another secret garage with a vintage car parked. She took off the cloak from the car and handed the keys over. Lola couldn't drive because she had a phobia of it. They both got in, Airen started the engine and drove off.
On their way to the airport, Lola took out her phone and placed a call to an unknown number, telling them that they needed to clean up their home and make their sudden disappearance unsuspicious. After she was done with the call, she asked Airen for his phone, which he gave to her, and she threw both their phones out of the window.
“What the fxck, Lo? Why did you do that?” Airen flared up on her because he did not understand anything that was happening.
“Just drive the car, Airen, I will explain everything to you once we board the plane. For now, focus all of your attention on the road”, Lola said.
They arrived at the airport and Lola asked Airen to sit down and wait while she got their tickets.
He did as he was told and even though he didn't know the specific place they were heading to, he didn't care because he trusted his sister wholeheartedly and was willing to follow her blindly.
He sat down, scanning through the airport as he bit his fingers until his eyes locked with a child. He noticed how she was staring at him weirdly. He looked at both of his sides, trying to understand why the child was staring at him in such a manner. He scanned himself and realized that his polo shirt was covered with blood, he quickly zipped up his jacket and cleared his throat, while he gave the child a fake smile.
“We are in luck, our flight leaves in ten minutes”. Lola walked to Airen and handed him a bottle of water.
“Thank you, Lo”, Airen collected the water from her, he opened it and took a sip from it and then closed it back.
“Where are we headed to Lo?”, he finally asked her. He preferred not to be in the dark anymore.
“Germany”, Lola revealed.
“Germany? Why there? Besides, whom are we running from and what about Matthew? Isn't he coming?”, Airen questioned. He was confused and couldn't understand the reason they had to fly down to Germany when their mother's body was lying barely cold on the floor in her room with her blood splattered all over.
And why hadn't they seen Mathew? He was the eldest, so he needed to be with them, but he was nowhere to be found and now Lola was saying they were to leave for a foreign nation? He just couldn't wrap his head around it.
“We aren't safe yet, Airen, and as for Mathew, after seeing what they did to mum, how gruesomely they slashed her with their swords, it only leaves me one conclusion: he is also dead, and they took his body for proof”, Lola said broken heartedly.
She didn't know where to start from, how she was going to tell him that he was a werewolf, that his father was one of the most powerful Alphas out there, and that his mother was also a powerful Luna whose family's pack was the oldest and the most respected in their werewolves clans, or that he wasn't her blood brother or their mother wasn't his real mum and that they were just mere servants who swore allegiance to his birth mother.
How was she going to start explaining everything to him? The betrayal he would feel from being lied to all his life? How would he cope after finding out that he wasn't who he thought he was?
“Lo, why would you say such words about Matthew? Why would you wish such an ill fate on him? Mathew is strong, and I know he is alive”. Airen rebuked his sister's words. He wasn't going to accept that in a matter of hours he had lost both his mother and brother to the cold hands of death. That wasn't going to be his reality. Losing their mother was enough emotional damage to him, he wasn't ready to add another.
The boarding was being announced, which interrupted their conversation.
Lola held her brother's hand and promised him she was going to explain everything to him on the plane. Airen brushed his hands out of hers and walked straight to the boarding line.
If she didn't explain anything to him while they were in the airport, how would she do that on the plane? Those were Airen's thoughts.
