Chapter 13Once I returned to Hillsville, armed with Judge Valentine’s insight on the case, I prepared for round two with the Carroll County Clerk of the Court. “Hello, I need to speak with Mr. Goad,” I said to the same young assistant. “I’m sorry; he is busy and can’t be interrupted,” the boy said, red-faced. “Oh I see.” I said. “In that case, just tell him that I’ve returned from talking to a former judge of the Central Virginia Courts and he has problems also with several aspects of the trials. I’ll just go forward with my story.” The door abruptly opened. “You have five minutes,” Goad said from his doorway “and not a minute more.” We walked into his office. I spent the next four minutes laying out the areas of concern that my “unidentified” retired judge had with the case. I
